The Greyhound Bengeo
This is the second pub/restaurant for the family following on from the successful Orange Tree in Sawbridgeworth which has won Open Tables Diners Choice award every month since opening back in April 2019 and is now ranked one of the top 10% in the world based on customer ratings on Trip Advisor.
Head Chef Daniel Little has designed a lunchtime tapas menu inspired by traditional dishes from around the world.
Along with our A La Carte menu, daily specials and pub classics we feel there is a choice to suit everybody.
The Greyhound was McMullen’s very first pub purchase back in 1835 and is still selling Hertfordshire’s finest award-winning ales today.
Steeped in history the Pub/Restaurant serves an extensive Grill and Fish menu alongside its Great British Menu which is put together by owner and Executive Chef Gareth Davies.

So pleased this is my nearest restaurant. We loved it, thank you!
Fantastic Roast. The meat was excellent. Lovely starter and pudding too. Service very good, just marred by the masks but obviously nothing that can be done about that at present. Good COVID ensures too. We wish we didn’t have too... but looking forward to the takeaway menu.
Lovely menu with lots of options for Sunday lunch. Everything was delicious.
Fantastic service throughout the meal from a friendly and professional team.
Excellent choice and produce. Great service, relaxing atmosphere, super clean, beautiful Sunday Roast and overall choice on menu.
Good food, service and ambience were fine. We would go back at some point.
A lovely warm & welcoming restaurant, amazing food & super sized portions.
Wishing you all good luck through the new lockdown, we will be back on the other side x
First trying The Greyhound with our friends and we had a fantastic meal. Great choices on the menu with a twist to some classics which really added to the flavour. Everyone enjoyed their meal and the food and service was excellent. We will certainly be going back and this will be a regular for the future.
Lovely food, great service, tables a safe distance apart.
Would defiantly recommend and will be returning.
Another lovely meal with great food and excellent service - thank you!
Disappointed as The Orange Tree is a fantastic restaurant and was pleased they had moved to Hertford, but, service not great steak had to be sent back as overcooked and had to remind them to take drinks orders for our children twice. Sorry but we won’t be coming back
A nice addition to Hertford, will be back for sure.
Service was good fish was very tasty
Had a great family meal out to say thanks to mum and dad for helping out. Just brilliant quality food and drinks with friendly service. Really not sure how it could be better. We have been twice since new management and will be back!! Our new favourite local in Hertford!!
My son took me for lunch on Wednesday. Restaurant was quiet, but really tastefully laid out (proper napkins!) and fully COVID compliant. Had a lovely meal (my son had fillet steak and I had the lobster and prawn risotto). Service was excellent and our server had a great sense of humour. The food was fab. Will definitely return. Most impressed.
The staff were very friendly and the food was delicious.
highly recommend to anyone who wants a good size gastro pub - great deco - great atmosphere
Perhaps my husband and I were unlucky but our Thai seafood curry was very bland although it was packed with fish. Also no Sauvignon Blanc available day there’d been a rush on.
Nice pub and restaurant with covid measure in place which do not spoil the atmosphere at all. Friendly and prompt service with no sense of being rushed to order.
Sadly, 3 of our choices were either altered or had run out which was very disappointing having looked forward to them. They had not been deleted from the menu so we ordered and were then told these things were not available.
The duck was a little pinker than we are used to and one person's potato was a bit hard. The portions are not large and veggies are extra.
Despite this we all enjoyed our food and had a good evening. It's early days so I'm sure things will only improve and I would go there again.
Amazing food and service, lovely pub will definitely be back!
Had a lovely anniversary meal at The Greyhound. Food was delicious . Will be returning.
Food is very high quality and delicious. Friendly service and atmosphere and the refurb looks great. A fantastic pub/restaurant in Bengeo.
We went for Friday lunch and had a great meal with great service. Will definitely be back.
Had an amazing meal out at the Greyhound. The food was delicious and service was excellent. Would highly recommend it
We had promised to take sister and brother in law to the recently re-opened Greyhound.
he agreed that the fillet steak (that we all chose) was an excellent piece of meat, although the "rare" could have been rarer. Noted to emphasise that next time
Jamie, Courtney and Alistair were fantastic along with the food, could not fault it.
Will be back
Very impressed for all the right reasons! Lovely welcome with a well set out dining room, excellent service & great menu to choose from. We went for Sunday lunch and had the prawn and lobster cocktail starter with Scottish Venison for the main. Planning to return soon for a weekend at Burger and Lobster dinner. Thanks to the team at The Greyhound and look forward to joining you again soon.
Amazing Sunday lunch, will definitely be back. Very family friendly. Good selection of wine. Friendly service.
Thoroughly enjoyable Sunday roast. Just the right amount with space for dessert. Lovely staff and lovely ambience.
Although the interior looks good, unfortunately the food was tepid and the service was hit and miss. We thought that the owner would be better off in the kitchen as he is certainly not front of house! Maybe things will improve in the future.
Lovely food, quite expensive for pub food. Feels like a pub dining room, not a restaurant. Good service
Table for 4, overall we were disappointed to be honest, we expected better things as the orange tree is great (sister restaurant). green curry bland and amateurish, as well as tepid. vegetables well past being fresh and didn’t get eaten, broccoli was brown internally, chicken ok, pork acceptable. Limited choice with a surprising amount of lobster in quite a few offerings. Shiraz was drinkable but not of note. The main contact and welcoming person was rather cold and stopped speaking to us at all after we complained about the veggies.
Hopefully just teething problems and it will improve.
Fantastic food and service! Would highly recommend
A really nice lunch. Good service. Will definitely return. A gem on our doorstep.
Wonderful. Food fabulous. Full restaurant
Sunday roast for 5 of us was very disappointing. Apart from the beef, which was very good, meats were grilled, not roasted. The duck was unidentifiable and we were served a small inedible lump of fat as lamb. It was replaced with chops.
Potatoes were inedible, clearly and visibly undercooked yet they still served them up. Veg almost raw. Gravy was very good.
Liqueur coffees were good but the one pudding, creme brûlée, we ordered was dreadful. It was a cold liquid and the shortbread was missing. When pointed it it was microwaved, clearly not the way to produce a good brûlée.
Very disappointing experience
Starters were lovely. Trio roast was very light on the meat portion but they did bring more out. One of the carrots was mouldy. Overall we were a bit disappointed. Alistair was very lovely though. We will come though :)
Great atmosphere, great food, and a welcome change to the usual generic chain restaurants. Nice touches to acknowledge our wedding anniversary. Keep it up, definitely be back
Excellent food and very friendly service. We felt safe and happy with their COVID measures. Will defo be going back
Food is as good as it looks in the photos. So great to have a local pub doing meals of this quality. Staff friendly.
Nice touch with the birthday card, and dessert.
Doggy bag - literally for the dog - was a bonus.
Really impressed, will be back soon, and hope to be allowed to stay longer ..
We all really enjoyed our meal. The steak and fish pie were fantastic.
