A little Pub history
The inn was open for business during the First and Second World Wars, and is reputed to have been a haven for German prisoners of war. The soldiers, who were held half a mile away at the Costain compound, used to sneak to the inn where they enjoyed a few drinks before heading back to their camp.
Make a day of it
With its huge gardens is a 'drive-out' destination to be enjoyed by the whole family. We are a real country pub in the traditional Essex weatherboard style, tucked away down a quiet lane.
Have been to this venue on many occasions and the food is always great. However, the service on Sunday was poor. 3 of us asked for the trio roast (turkey, beef & pork) to be told the turkey had sold out (at 3:30 on a sunday). We asked for lamb or something else to replace it but were told the whole dish was off of the menu and we weren't allowed 2 meats or a substitute. So 2 of us ordered beef, I ordered the lamb. The size of the lamb in comparison to the beef was actually funny - my 2 friends were laughing at the size of the meat portion specifically (the rest, veg, potatoes etc were fine). When we called the waitress over, she went to get the Manager. The Manager turned up to the table, puffed out her cheeks & said "I've been told to come over?" She really could not be less interested in this fiasco and had no interest in appeasing the situation. Essentially - it is what it is. We ate what we had and carried on.
It's a shame. Atmosphere & quality of the food was great. The service was pretty poor. Would have recommeded to people previously - I wouldn't now.
My worst ever experience.
Table of 8:- every order had at least one problem.
Staff started by telling us what wasn’t available. We placed our order and waited. Over the next couple of hours the waitress returned 4 separate times to ask some of our party to change orders as their previous choice was no longer available.
Finally after 2.5 hours the food started to arrive. We chose to leave rather then eat the food served to us which was either raw, cold, or overcooked and mostly a combination of all these things on the same plate. Simply disgusting.
I like this venue but appeared to be understaffed leading to delays in taking and bringing our orders. I have been visiting since 2013 and food is consistently good and value for money.
Staff are always welcoming
Had lunch on a sunny Saturday afternoon with a couple of friends. The weather was delightful. Could have had a table outside, but the menu is slightly reduced and didn't want to be surrounded by smokers (unsure if they can smoke on the terrace, but didn't want to take a chance).
Roast potatoes undercooked.
Nobody asked if we wanted another drink or if food was ok.
Empty plates sat on the table for 20 minutes with several members of staff ignoring.
Waited another further 15 to pay after we asked for the bill.
Early Christmas dinner
So disappointed with the food today. Loads of items missing, the special board wasn’t read out to us. Veg was hard and meat was fatty.
Had a good lunch at the Greyhound with friends for a birthday lunch. Good wholesome food and a nice atmosphere and reasonable prices
Tasty and easy going with my young children
Lovely venue, nice food and relaxed atmosphere. I would recommended this pub
Greyhound is a lovely tucked away country pub in Brentwood. Lovely food, service could be a lot better with more staff to avoid long waits in between courses, drinks and paying.
Food was excellent and well presented. Staff were friendly and helpful. Waitress was particularly good. Lovely setting and good outside space. Will definitely return!
Very dissaspointing . Service slow food arrived cold and had to be sent back.
Lovely food, cooked as requested, good service, nothing was to much trouble.
Very disappointed, had prawn cocktail to start prawns looked watery and had no flavour like they had just come out the freezer, I had an upset stomach the next day.
Steak was ok, coffee and dessert not very hot.
Young enthusiastic staff but not very professional and did not like being called lovie, sweetie.
Excellent service, friendly atmosphere, good food. Would recommend.
As always the food was excellent with a wide ranging menu. Comfortable good service and reasonable. Perfect!
This was supposed to be a nice family lunch however the food was absolutely awful, no taste apart from the potatoes which were so burnt they tasted bitter.
The meat was extremely dry, we couldn't cut our Yorkshire puddings for fear of damaging the plates and when they brought my 2yr old grandsons pizza to him they gave "him" a PIZZA WHEEL CUTTER.
The manager comp'd the food and spoke to the cook, who became angry, aggressive, intimidating and unreasonable. And all this infront of 3 small and very frightened children. They said they had a new chef well they need to get another, and until they do my suggestion if you're thinking of visiting this place is DO NOT GO THERE
Only gave 1 stars for everything because you have to rate to review
Not happy with the service, food was lukewarm on warm plates, potatoes burnt & cold! Beef very fatty & quite tough. Not very good at all. Staff very scruffy & not very attentive
Our Open Table reservation was made 3rd February for Mother's Day 26th March 2017. My husband rang the Greyhound a few days before to confirm and was fairly rudely told that they had NO record of any booking and they were fully booked and so could not offer us a table. They were not sorry. They also said they did not take bookings for reservations for parties larger than 4 people!!!! Odd!!
We rang Open Table to ask them to investigate, they came back saying that they had not been able to reach the Greyhound initially but had been eventually advised that they did not have a table for us. SO WHAT IS THE POINT OG HAVING A BOOKING SERVICE THAT DOESN'T BOOK???We were credited with 3000 points! Pretty disgusted all round.
Having been to the greyhound numerous times I always found the food and general experience good. The last visit however was not so good. Food was average at best and service despite the restaurant being nearly empty was not great.
My first visit and I had a nice time food was great .Will return for more and tell others about this pub.
We took our friends for a lovely meal to celebrate their birthday and had a fabulous time!!
The management were friendly and accommodating.. the atmosphere is warm and welcoming and the food was delicious! A lovely place to go for a meal in a beautiful setting, highly recommend!
