I love this place. It’s my go-to to meet my girlfriends in the city for breakfast. The service is always outstanding. The food is delicious. Highly recommend.
I've been here previously and the food was excellent. This time however I ordered a T-Bone, medium rare, and it was horrible. Simultaneously stringy and bland. I don't get it.
After lunch I ordered a long black and it was so bad I couldn't finish it.
The service however, was excellent.
Our daughter and son-in-law and their two daughters came from overseas to visit us (me and my wife). On this day our daughter had other engagements so it was the five of us. It was quite an experience and we all had a good time.
We loved the atmosphere although it was quite noisy. My green breakfast bowl was excellent My husband enjoyed his steak but thought his portion was rather small In general well worth a visit
Fabulous find for a pre-show dinner! Enjoyed sharing some exceptional small plate dishes. Great 1920’s vibe. Will definitely visit again the next time we are in Sydney.
Place was too noisy for my liking. The high tea was nice but some little savoury hot things would have been good. A bit too much sweet and not quite enough savoury. Enjoyable nevertheless.
We enjoyed my friend's birthday brunch at the Grounds. The atmosphere was interesting and the dessert and coffee was nice. However the service felt very rushed and impersonal, and the value for the food wasnt great. There are many other locally owned cafes I would rather support than a revolving door place like this.
Too noisy and disappointed that the breakfast menu finished at 11.30 . The lunch menu was limited.
Our table was running late so the staff were able to push our reservation back by an hour which I really appreciate.
The grounds is a lovely cafe. The ambience is lively and aesthetic. Staff were very friendly and considerate.
Such fabulous food - bigger servings than expected - and cooked to perfection (we had the crumbed cutlets). So good to finally find a restaurant with heavy based wine glasses that add to the occasion. Very friendly & helpful staff. Their black & white uniforms added to the general ambience - as we felt transported back to Paris from another era. (The music could have been more Parisian for us - maybe Piaf & similar.) It was however very noisy due to volume of clients. That said, we're looking forward to our next visit.
I have been here twice now, have tried mains and deserts both times. I highly recommend this place, the food portions are big and well presented. The staff are very friendly and attentive and the dining atmosphere was amazing, loved the lighting of the room and decor.
I've been to a number of restaurants in Sydney and this is definitely one I look forward to returning too again!
Had to wait 20mins for a 8.15am table despite making a reservation. Food was good & service was reasonable. Over $70 for two people is a bit pricey but we were happy overall. Will be coming back.
I love this place. The hotcake breakfast is the best. A must visit when in Sydney and one of the few places in the Sydney CBD where you can get genuinely good coffee.
Avocado and tomoato on toast: At $22, please toast the bread :)
Always enjoy the time at The Grounds of the City, with fantastic ambiance and menu choices. Last visit disappointed with the coffee order taking over 40 mins to arrive, turning what was to be a brief meeting with work colleagues into a 1.5 hr session. Will always recommend The Grounds of the City, though will caveat this in future adding- to ensure you are not running to a tight schedule.
Food is delicious.
Staff could lose the attitude.
It’s very loud so ideal for friends but not so much a business lunch
Very pleasant experience. Hope my chicken salad plate can be a bit bigger in portion.
Hi Liza, Thanks so much for the 5 stars and for your comments! We hope to see you again very soon! Best regards, The Grounds of The City team
Im sorry to say this but the food needs a lot of work compared to your brand.
Steak sandwich was too salty and oily and veal was dry and very under cooked. The food also took over 30 mins to be prepared. For the city, a lot of cooperate workers only have 1 hour for lunch.
Waited over an hour for our food to arrive which ended up being a plain tomato salad and some boring sautéed potatoes. The waitress was pretty unapologetic. Left hungry and late for our event because of this.
Hotcakes with berries were awesome. Overall service was friendly and attentive however my girlfriend's initial order of a juice did take a long time to be delivered. Noise level was high on a Sunday morning. Our table neighbours were very close to the point where you have to move the table for people to sit down/get up at adjacent tables. Interior has loads of historical character and atmosphere.
Hi there, Thank you for your review! We hope to see you again very soon! Kind regards, The Grounds of The City team
Great vibe and service.
Highly recommend this place!
Hi Alex, Thanks so much for the 5 stars, we hope to see you again very soon! Best regards, The Grounds of The City team
A favorite date spot of my wife and I, we get the coffee tasting board every time we go. The ambience and decor of the place is a cozy Victorian vibe, the food and coffee are always to due for (albeit a bit on the pricy side, but we still feel it’s worthwhile).
Hi there, Thank you so much for the 5 stars and your lovely comments! We will see you again very soon! Kind regards, The Grounds of The City team
Just loved the High Tea; all our favourites appeared so deliciously and freshly made! Excellent service, tea brewed perfectly and very little waiting time. Great choice of 20s Jazz ambient music ... all in all a lovely afternoon. I will be back!
Hi Jane, We were so happy to hear you enjoyed the high tea! We hope to see you again very soon! Kind regards, The Grounds of The City team
It’s a really beautiful place to eat and I have enjoyed being there other times but I was really disappointed with our high tea experience. The food took over half an hour to come out (despite the fact that we’d booked specifically for high tea)
and there really wasn’t much food once it did come out. The limited savory options were stale and tasted like they’d been in the fridge for days. They kept messing up our drinks order as well. The Grounds City really needs to pick up the slack - it’s been years and the teething issues should be worked out by now but they aren’t which is sad because the Alexandria venue is impeccable.
Lovely, unexpected place! Great lunch food, would be nice for a romantic date. Would love to return to try breakfast menu. Very glad we reserved a table.
Hi Rachel, Thank you so much for the 5 stars and your wonderful comment. We will see you for some brekkie very soon! Best regards, The Grounds of The City team
Service was slow. Had run out of millett for one dish, which is odd as it is a dry ingredient. Green bowl was more quinoa than greens. Ambience was good, but wait staff appeared rushed and in a hurry to turn tables.
Staff at door was very rude and would not let us in until our booking to the minute. After finishing had to wait 15 minutes for the waiter to let us actually pay for our meal after being ignored several times and reminding them 3 times.
Food was okay, but definitely not worth all the hype and trouble dealing with the staff.
Business meeting W o/seas guest
The good and service were both spectacular. We were made to feel very special for our anniversary. Loved the atmosphere!

Vegetarian food was bad.
Waygu beef sandwich slices were too big and the beef - average.
Cost - appalling - ridiculously over-priced.
Lovely location and great selection of dishes although my omelet could’ve used a bit more salt and cheese.
Waiters/waitresses incredibly high standard. Food fabulous. Only criticism is: professional but very cold staff at the service window: unwelcoming and very business like: hearding cattle rather than welcoming guests in a friendly manner. Otherwise beautiful venue, private booth and personal attention. No toilets on the premises a bad point.
I would and have gone several time in spite of the negative points above.
Hi Zabette, My sincere apologies for a sub-par welcome. I have discussed your comments with the host team on that day and will be making sure that they do not repeat the same mistakes going forward! Thank you for your comments and we hope to see you again very soon! Kind regards, Kat - General Manager
Enjoyed our dining experience completely, the food and venue were outstanding. We booked online and this was a plus as others were having to line up and wait for a table to become vacant.
Hi Sandra, Thanks for your review and your lovely comments! We can't wait to see you again! Kind regards, The Grounds of The City team
We had a really nice meal before the Symphony. It was a perfect location and the service was very good
Hi Carol, Thanks so much for the 5 stars! See you soon, The Grounds of The City team
I had to wait even tho I had a reservatio n. Not too pleased
Nice environment and decor but noisy. Food plain not great presentation for the cost. Does not even reach an up market pub standard of the food in terms of quality and cost.
Took a while to get attention for our bill.
Maybe ok for afternoon tea but would not recommend for a meal
Hi Elaine, Thank you for your review and apologies if the food did not match your expectations. We hope to see you again. Bets regards, The Grounds of The City team
Enjoyed the feel of the restaurant, enjoyed the meals not so much the deserts. Would be interested in knowing the history of teh site. Was it always as it is now? Great to have a booth, private but easly to access service. A bit noisy for someone who wears a hearing aid!!
Hi Penelope, Thank you for your review and your comments! Feel free to have a chat when you are next in, we will be happy to tell you our story! We have only been around for 2.5 years and have not changed much since we opened the doors in 2017. Best regards, The Grounds of The City team

Food was just ok .. I thought it was very average ..
