The Ivy on the Square
The restaurant features a Parisian-style outdoor terrace and a bar, offering tranquil relaxed yet sophisticated dining just a stone’s throw from Princes Street.
Really enjoyed our food, the staff were great and a really relaxed atmosphere. We can't wait to go back with my misses.
My partners sirloin steak was overdone and waited 25 mins on replacement and no side order replaced of spinach which he was charged for ,he had to eat alone after our party had eaten .
They did give us a round of complimentary drinks but as there was no more sirloin he had a replacement fillet and charged an extra £5 !
I also had ordered sirloin but had run out so had fillet and was also charged an extra £5
This is not acceptable to us and being our first visit has put us off revisiting
The rest of the food was very good though
Nice atmosphere however I had a few basic issues with the food and service - this is reflected in the rating.
Scallops were served with some plastic packaging mixed up in the sauce. They were discounted from the receipt (only at my request) so I cannot completely condemn the restaurant however for me packaging in the dish was a basic failure- it needs to be flagged! Apart from this, the food was tasty. My partner was satisfied with her food.
Service was lacking. Carafe of water was never replenished once it was empty - it was removed from table without replacement. Allergy enquiries were met with the waitress reading the menu (to check suitability) over our shoulder rather checking with the kitchen first (eventually she did have to check anyway). Drinks took an age to be served - we could see our order sitting on the bar getting warm for some time. The bill had a discretionary service charge included which we did pay - we were probably over-generous in paying this.
I don’t think I’ll be going back nor will I be recommending to others unfortunately.
Long black hair in my food. The person next to me had plastic in their soup. The waiter dealt with it really well though. Lovely guy, felt sorry for him.
I came here over a year ago and there was a daddy long legs in my rocket.
Either the chef hates me or they have really low hygiene standards.
Love the Ivy
We had brunch which was average. Appeared to be rushed. Our coasts were just about thrown at us as were coming in as others wer coming in.
We dined on Valentines Day and we’re really disappointed with our food. The Blackened Cod was incredibly salty and covered in baby coriander which wasn’t on the description on the menu. For somebody who doesn’t like coriander this was really disappointing.
Not once was our table checked through the meal to enable us to provide feedback.
When collecting our plates our waiter as nice as he was asked what was wrong with the cod, we explained and he replied “I’m not sure what I can do about that I’m afraid”.... that wasn’t really the response we were looking for.
Although he didn’t ask our 2nd dish of ribeye steak on the bone was overcooked as was the tables next to ours.
It was an incredibly busy evening so you can forgive the lack of attentiveness but the lack of quality of our food and understanding when providing feedback has left a sour taste. We didn’t bother with desert and will not be back.
Although our Waiter was excellent, there was cheese on my husbands burger, when he asked for no cheese. The cheesecake base was soft and we were served tea at the beginning of our meal, meant for two tables along, by another waiter I will add.
There was no adjustment to our bill and it was rather pricey for the burgers if honest
We had a very warm welcome from the staff. The restaurant is lovely and we sat up stairs at the window overlooking the square. The only disappointment was that our coats were not taken and we had to have them over our chairs. The waiters were very courteous and the food was fabulous.
My girlfriend and I had a special Valentines Dinner at the Ivy on the Square,
Booking was easy and quick,
The restaurant is beautiful,
More than anything, the service was outstanding, staff were more than delightful!
They were so helpful with my girlfriend's dairy and gluten intolerance, were fascinating to talk to and offered warm and professional service,
The A La Carte menu is less reasonably priced, though the set menu was great value!
Food and cocktails were delicious, and we would definitely recommend the Ivy to friends and family.
Very grateful to all the staff for a great evening,
Daniel and Emmy
Made very welcome and staff were busy but nothing was any trouble. Delicious food, thank you 😊
Went for brunch and was not disappointed. The service was very professional and polite. The food was of a very high standard, made from fresh produce and presented beautifully. Lovely atmosphere too
Lovely atmosphere for Valentine’s Day. Great service also. Food came a little too quickly but apart from that - couldn’t fault.
Was very good overall but the service was much poorer than on prior occasions . They were friendly but we had to keep looking for a waiter to get a drink . Food was excellent and overall was a great meal .
I took my niece for dinner and we had a lovely meal with the black cod bring particularly good, The service was spot on and I will definitely be back soon,
Nothing special about this restaurant. The menu certainly does not excite. Food is of a very standard level. Starter of truffled mushrooms lacked mushrooms and flavour, they were diced & tricky to eat as was the rosti that accompanied them which had chunks of potato which also fell apart. Sirloin steak delicious, cooked to perfection, had to order separately veg & truffled chips with parmesan, could only taste truffle & chips were not very crispy & very soft in the middle. For these prices I would expect better. There are plenty excellent other restaurants around which are much better value.
Fabulous service - wonderful waitress. Amazing food, highly recommend the arancini, haggis bon bons and the salmon! 10/10
Food and service excellent from start to finish.
Good welcome, attentive waioter but not over attentive, good menu and wine list, servcie and food very good, no complaints
We had a fabulous evening where the food, ambience and service was second to none. A bit pricey even for the city centre but great for a special occasion. Be aware that the service charge is included in the bill which personally I would have preferred to have given to the waiting staff. I think the restaurant make enough profit on the food alone.
Great service and decent food at acceptable prices. This visit was for a birthday and without any fuss the birthday girl was given a cake with candle when others were having dessert. I’ve eaten here several times and will return again.
We had a really lovely birthday lunch here, the service was topnotch , from the staff welcoming us at the door, the servers, everyone. It was my Mothers 91st birthday and she was made to feel very special, she even had a lovely cake with a candle. Food was yummy too. Great atmosphere but just a bit noisy for us, but it won’t stop us going back .
The food was lovely service was really good
We were sitting downstairs on right at corner window and it was a bit draughty but didn’t spoil our meal
Excellent service, waiters were brilliant. Food very good also. Like it better than The Ivy in Covent Garden.
GREAT SERVICE AND ATMOSPHERE,,foof not to usual standard ,,prawn cocktail lettuce and sauce was mush .! Dealt with well be staff but need to raise the bar and sharpen up in kitchen .Wont deter a return to enjoy the bar and ambience however .
Loved my recent outing to the Ivy. I went with a friend for afternoon tea which was excellent - generous, tasty and perfectly presented. Lovely booth in the corner on a rainy afternoon - it all made for a memorable outing.
Very friendly welcome. Delicious cocktail to start - blood orange Margarita. Had the special of Osso Bucco shepherds pie and it was just delicious! Would heartily recommend. I had the tarte fine for dessert - lovely but a big portion so a great option to share. Wine list has lost of good option, the NZ Sauv Blanc was delicious and you can get as a carafe as well. Went on a Sunday and there was nice background music from the DJ - so had a nice atmosphere
Excellent all round. Staff, food and ambiance all excellent.
Lovely breakfast in a classy establishment. Mentioned that we were there for a birthday and they came out with a wee cake.
Good food but the drinks are a bit too expensive. The noise level was off the scale and to be fair the waiters were trying to quiet down a couple of tables. This really spoiled it for us as we could hardly hear ourselves speak.
Great fun. Would certainly return....good food and very comfortable
The front of house were very welcoming, the waiters were extremely attentive, almost unnoticeable as they cleared our table. The food was extremely tasty, good portion sizes but it was expensive for what it was. The restaurant was clean tidy but very noisy at times. The ladies toilet very very clean wig nice hand towels which is very nice.
Wonderful dining experience
Attentive waiter, excellent food in a stunning setting.
Fabulous dinner setting - my favourite in Edinburgh.
This was my 5th visit to the restaurant and I’ve always enjoyed it. This time I was there with 5 others and whilst the food was good, my starter and main was cold. I would have returned it, however, one of the side dishes didn’t appear with the main and we brought it to the attention of the waiting staff but it still did not appear.
Overall, the experience was ok but for £425 I expect food to be hot and a bit better service.
Overall fantastic but we arrived 20 minutes early and were refused access to bar to wait on our table therefore had to leave and come back.
Very loud music being played which interrupted conversation.
Excellent service, from our friendly helpful waiter, nice varied menu - excellent choices. Couldn’t fault anything. Looking forward to going again soon.
We both had steaks which were cooked to perfection. Great atmosphere and very friendly staff. Highly recommend
