This restaurant is closed, I wasn't informed of the closure before attending my booking. Now I've been sent an email to write a review, talk about salt in a wound...
Great service, excellent fish dishes and a spectacular location on the Quayside.
First visit here and didn't know a lot about the restaurant but friends had been and was it recommended. We were probably the largest table in the restaurant, which didn't seem overly busy.
The food was good; the truffle risotto with scallops was gorgeous and the chef, when asked, provided us with a selection of desserts to share. I love that flexibity in service. On the whole I would give the food a big thumbs up.
The issue was really the service; but not all of the service. When you get the order wrong, don't send it back to the table with one of your junior staff and let them face the embarrassment. Actually find out what the order should be, and deliver it personally. This wasn't the only service issue involving this member of staff; she initially asked for our drinks order, then ran away before taking It! Twice we had to go looking for service. It didn't spoil anything but it did let the place down.
Very good menu. I could have ordered all of the dishes. It lived up to the promise of the menu. We'll definitely be back.
Really enjoyed my experience at this restaurant, my only issue, was with the sunlight, and reflection of the Windows. Really petty but I was too hot and uncomfortable.
Overall a lovely dinning experience, the choice of food was very good, it was well cooked and presented. The restaurant was very quite and I did feel that occasionally it took a little time to get the attention of one of the two waitresses who were serving. The service was very very good in general.
My only slight criticism was that the background music was a little loud at times .
Would definitely eat here again.
Excellent meal attentive staff and high quality food. Highly recommended.
The food was good. The restaurant is comfortable and it's nice to find a place where it's still possible to have a proper conversation without being blasted with too loud music and the clang of pans from the kitchen. Good service, if a little bit slow.
a lovely place, great staff and lovely food, my son and grandson were up from London
so we had a lovely get together, I recommended the jolly fisherman as we had been there and loved it we had such a lovely evening
I went to celebrate my birthday with my husband and some friends.
I received a complimentary glass of fizz and a desert which I thought was a really lovely touch.
I shared my desert but not the fizz. Ha! Ha!
Will definitely go again.
Disappointing experience. Liked the decor but found the food underwhelming. For the price the quality and quantity should have been better. At one time we were at the only occupied table which was a high banquette overlooking a row of 3 window tables. Imagine our surprise when the next couple to arrive were seated at the window table we were looking down on. I'm sure we spoiled their experience too.
We had a fabulous afternoon meeting friends not seen for 40 years. The staff were friendly & attentive but not overwhelming. Food was lovely and we were not rushed out so altogether a really good experience. I'll be going back with family and other friends thanks so much for a great afternoon.
Food was good, environment was good.
We did however, order one cocktail and received 2, we didn't pay for the second one, but this shouldn't happen. Then we had ordered a side salad with one of the mains but never received and then it was added to the bill, they apologized and removed it, but still this shouldn't happen.
the service was friendly and polite, but it took them ages to collect the starter dishes and serve the main, but it was worth the wait as the food was good.
So a little tweaking required there, but it was O.K overall.
Very pleasant meal, very friendly service, excellent location - planning a dinner for 7 people on 1 September, which is a recommendation.
we have been there before and love it
we are coming this evening with my son and grandson who are up for a visit from London they will love it
Food was great, staff could have been more attentive considering how quiet it was. Had to keep getting up to ask for tea refill/ clean cutlery&plates/ the bill. Great value and views.
We visited during the Newcastle Restaurant Week and, as on previous occasions, it was excellent value for money. Although, as one would expect, the choice was limited, what was available was of a very high standard and beautifully presented. We will definitely be visiting this restaurant again (hopefully, soon !).
Food very good also good cocktails after meal staff very helpful
Good food in great location.
Fantastic food, friendly service , brilliant value, stylish surroundings, excellent location - brilliant choice for any occasion
Excellent food and excellent service waitresses were very attentative
we have been there before and enjoyed it so much we returned for restaurant week
it is a lovely place and the food and service could not be any better
once again we had a lovely table at the window and we had help with my husbands walker
the live theatre is very near so the ideal place for a meal before the theatre , the sage is just over the bridge
we enjoyed our visit very much
I went there with my husband, he has mobility problems, the staff were so helpful
we had a lovely table at the window, we both had fish and chips and shared a starter
I enjoyed a glass of wine with my meal, it was just so lovely, we are making a return visit next week, for the restaurant week
thank you to the staff for making our visit so lovely
Excellent service and food as always. I'm always surprised it isn't busier. The best Sunday lunch in town
Good Food; Good Service; Good Value. If you get the window seats / table. Great view over the Tyne and people watching
excellent seafood platter, augmented by sublime triple-cooked chips. But don't expect a finger bowl!
Meeting up with my brother and sister in law for Sunday lunch we decided to try the Jolly Fisherman on Newcastle Quayside rather than our usual haunts in that locality.. However we were hugely disappointed, the food was barely average at best ....a pretty uninspiring portion of fish and chips which we assumed was one of the specialities. The desserts were also less than memorable. However the experience was totally marred by the "deafening noise" of the mini group who were playing guitars and singing. We are massive music lovers but this was totally inappropriate for a Sunday lunchtime and killed off any meaningful conversation. We did let our concerns be known to one of the waiting staff asking if the volume could be reduced. We were informed that nothing could be done. Ordinarily we would have stayed for coffee but left on completion of desserts. We regularly meet up in a variety of Tyneside pubs/restaurants and usually have no problem leaving a tip via payment by debit card .......this establishment was unable to offer such a service which was another blip. However the loudness of the music was the main gripe, we will definitely not be returning which is a shame as we are frequent visitors to the quayside.
Friendly service from staff, good quality of food and great view of the quayside
My boyfriend took me to the Jolly fisherman for a date night and I was not disappointed! We were sat at a window table upon arrival with an amazing view over the quayside. The service was fantastic, particularly from the young gentleman who served us, very helpful when recommending wine and friendly service. The food was amazing!!! We had the Scotch egg and crab soup for starters which were both amazing and had the roast cod and fish pie for main, again amazing! Will 100% be returning!
Went for quick lunch following my sons graduation , quite quiet, and staff very attentive.
Very warm welcome, good menu selections and food very well presented and all good dishes were lovely
Booked on OpenTable for late Sunday lunch (3pm), pub and dining room was quiet and we got a table with view over the Tyne, service was excellent waitress and owner/manager came over to talk to us and went through the options available. Food arrived in good time, beef was perfectly prepared, veg was fresh and crisp. Will be going back soon (and often) ...
We booked a table for 8.15 , Two of our party do not like fish .The waitress informed us that they had ran out of lamb and steak ,this resulted in the two peopke concerned eating bread and butter - The fish platter was served with no plates . We had to ask on three occasions for cutlery . Drinks were ordered and not brought even after requesting them three times .
I took my Dad for a belated Father's Day meal as he is a big fan of seafood. The restaurant was beautifully decorated and we were seated at a table at the front of the restaurant looking out onto the Quayside, a lovely view for a meal. Lovely ambience, wonderful food, we highly recommend the Halibut with ginger and soy sauce. The wine list was excellent, the desserts were also lovely and we can't fault this place. Highly recommended to all!
I arrived in a wheelchair , i can walk short distances but not from where my partner and i were staying . Getting in was difficult cars parked in front on access round the back . Staff helped as they could but i felt awkward and embarrassed ! It was obviously a problem ,not how I wanted to start the evening. However food was delicious and service good.
As a regular to The Jolly Fisherman at Craster, we were looking forward to trying the Quayside establishment. We were surprised that it was really not that busy, and although the staff were friendly we were overall generally disappointed with the quality of the food and felt it was expensive for what we got. Would not rush back. Sorry 😐
Won't return - food below average, tables shouting over the top
Excellent as always food outstanding and cocktails
Lovely, fresh food in a nice environment - perfect for a Friday lunch with work colleagues
Extremely attentive and friendly service. Superb food. Unfortunate that the dessert we wanted wasn't available but the waiter did his utmost to accommodate our second choices. Only had card to use and no cash for a tip, but was allowed to leave tip on card.
Will definitely return.
