As always, a really pleasant dining experience. A great ambience, attention to detail, fabulous food and excellent service.
Have been dining at the restaurant for a number of years and standards in all areas have remained consistently good. One of the best places to dine.
Amazing...you must try the Aylesbury Duckling
The service is the best around
The food here is outstanding and George is, as always, the consummate host. His waiting people were not really good. I spoke to the male waiter and asked why he was not smiling and he told me, in very hesitant English that he had an accident in the storm. But the female waitress was very miserable and non-commutative even though we tried to encourage her to talk to us. So sorry to criticise the service but if you don’t say exactly what you think then how are the people in charge to know how customers feel.
The most PERFECT place ever. Will DEFINITELY return.
Simply wonderful, this is the third time I have been to this restaurant and it have never disappointed. The staff and excellent and the food it to die for ! I recommend the duck!
Everything worked like clockwork. Great attentive service and good food. We weren’t at all rushed so had a relaxing 3 hour family festive lunch...which is a tradition for us.
Always enjoy this restaurant, the chef can definitely cook. On this occasion though felt really rushed into ordering by the head waiter, we arrived 20 minutes before our booking to meet with friends and have a catch up and drink but the waiter kept pressing us all for our orders. Still as usual it was a great meal.
As always - as a family we’ve been visiting for many years - excellent. Thank you.
Excellent as always, George and the team offer exceptional customer service with fantastic food and value for money
If you like eating great tasting food in a 16th century Inn with real oak beams and wood fires (in winter), with very welcoming owners and staff this must be one of the best. On arrival there’s always space for diners in a reception tabled room for drinks, canopies and a chat. Nothing’s rushed, but then you head into the main dining room greeted by friendly waiting staff. Even when full it’s relatively quiet compared to most places theses days, I don’t think I’ve ever heard a phone go off as diners obviously want to enjoy their companions and meals. Afterwards Coffee and treats can be enjoyed in a lounge to extend the occasion just that bit longer, just like being at friends and family.
My favourite must be the local ‘special’ roasted Aylesbury duck, cooked to perfection for two and expertly cut near your table. For me then followed by flambé crepes suzettes, performed at your table to great effect. There’s always something different to try, however, fixed or à la carte menus and seasonal specials.
At this visit for the first time I had a traditional Christmas roast turkey with all the trimmings, well it was that time of year. Local turkey fairy thickly cut with some brown meat too, well cooked and so tender with amazing gravy as it should be. Such a nice change to have all the trimmings but quality over quantity, don’t get me wrong this was a large meal for anyone but the vegetable dish wasn’t imposing. I’m sure if you wanted more roasties or other items they would be most accommodating, like eating at friends and family.
While for me this is a special occasion treat it’s not overly expensive unless you want it to be :-)
... highly recommended for small or even larger numbers of guests. Though for large high spirits special occasions perhaps make use of their private dining room.
Part of the charm of this restaurant is the fact it stays the same. Sadly our Christmas lunch had a feel of “ kept warm “. The portions were quite small...2 strips of parsnips...4 sprouts etc. No red cabbage no cauliflower cheese it all felt down to a price. A slice of Christmas pudding with a tiny brandy snap basket full of cream and a tiny mince pie all on the same plate. We went for a treat and left feeling very disappointed.
The service was first class from the minute we arrived. Very calm relaxing restaurant and the food was brilliant. Staff all very friendly. We had the Aylesbury Duck and would recommend trying this if you get the chance. Will definitely be visiting again.
This is such a charming old-school restaurant experience; a lounge for pre-dinner drinks, crisp white linens on the tables and the all the trappings of how posh restaurants used to be. And the food lives up to the standards of the service; classic french-style cuisine using fresh seasonal ingredients sourced from the local area. They are apparently famous for their duckling, which is carved table-side by the manager for the full effect. We opted for turbot and steak, both of which were beautiful. Would also recommend any of their classic french desserts, tarte tatin or crepes suzette, flambeed at the table for you. Just full of old world charm, feels special even if it’s a week night.
The Kings Head is a restaurant for those that enjoy friendly attentive service with excellent food in a traditional environment
My Husband visited with a friend. They had a thoroughly enjoyable couple off hour’s. they had the tastings menu. Which they would recommend. The service was excellent. And we hope to be able too visit again soon.
The Kings Head is such a special place but still manages to make everyone feel comfortable and a valued customer
Disappointing visit. Overcooked, dry duck and average noodles. Service seemed to be too much trouble. Felt more like visiting an unwelcome dinner party. Shame as normally good.
We have been coming here for years and this place is consistently good. The duck is to die for. Excellent food, extensive wine menu. Yes its not cheap but you get what you pay for. A faultless meal and service
This was my 2nd visit to the kings head as our 1st experience was so good we wanted to treat my brother for his 50th birthday and again it did not disappoint. It is so good to see filleting of fish, carving of duck and the flambé of Puddings done at the tables, such a rare thing these days. We look forward to a 3rd visit in the near future well done to all concerned
The Kings Head never disappoints. The luncheon taster menu was delicious and very good value. As always, the service was faultless. We will most certainly pay another visit when we want a special treat.
What a Gem of restaurants. Compliments where compliments are due. From the front of house to the Maitre D to the serving staff. And compliments to the Chef. Everything was amazing
We went to the restaurant to celebrate two birthdays with a very large portion of duck! Aa always, the food was amazing. Not only did we all have duck, but we all had Tarte Tatin to finish, which was out of this world!
Once again it was a very pleasant dinner, well up to the usual standards. No complaints there, but I did feel it is getting expensive and was quite poor value for the £150.00 it cost for 2 people, with very few drinks. This OK for a special occasion, but rules out more regular visits. The menu seems to get smaller every time we go, and there is certainly not the same choice as a few years ago.
A wonderful evening to celebrate the birthday of my very elderly aunt. She loves the ambience and the personal service that she receives here. The food was fabulous, the duck here is always superb.
Many thanks for a special evening.
This is a traditional restaurant. Some of the courses require a little more refinement. Overall the restaurant offers fair value for money, with good service and atmosphere.
Very enjoyable and will definitely go back again. The food and service was outstanding and the staff were very professional indeed
Delicious lunch for a celebratory birthday. Three courses including very tasty Aylesbury duckling with amazing crispy skin followed by tarte tatin. The sun was shining and we rounded it all of with coffee outside.
Wonderful food! Great atmosphere, and all staff work really hard to make your meal and experience great! Some new food runners and waiters/waitresses so are unsure of what’s what but give them time and patience and I’m sure they will be amazing team members. Had a lovely time with my boyfriend, celebrating four years together, to our surprise they bought out a slice of chocolate gateau after our meal with ‘Happy Anniversary’ in piped chocolate. Beautiful touch, to a beautiful day
Always fantastic food and service at The Kings Head. A wonderful reception on arrival, genuine and sincere French elegance combined with a traditional English public house ambience is a marriage made in heaven.
I'm not usually one for Sunday roast beef etc. but the Buccleugh beef is fantastic - full of flavour and very tender.
The whole evening was very good particularly the food which was beautifully presented and tasted mouthwatering KY good! The one thing that stopped the experience getting higher scores was the noise level. You could hear a pin drop across the restaurant. This meant that the guy explains Brexit and the FTSE could be heard everywhere. Could do with some Soundmasking or at least some tasteful background music
This birthday lunch met all our requirements we were delighted by all components of service, restaurant ambiance and super food.
One of the best meals
Always good for a special meal but the cost means it has to be a special occasion!
This was our 1st visit to the Kings Head having a space in our diary for dinner we looked on the opentable app for local high quality food and this choice was outstanding from booking to coffee it was superb. The staff are exceptional, food even better the wines are high quality and not over priced and When the bill was presented it came as a pleasant surprise !! Well done we cannot wait for our return visit.
Best ever Aylesbury duck and plenty of it. Carved at the table.
My favourite restaurant. Excellent service and food. Old fashioned elegant dining and in my book that is a compliment
Again a truly excellen meal and wine. Great location and a quiet reserved style and hosted superbly By George.
Great food and wine, thoroughly enjoyed.
Always a pleasure to visit. Food excellent and service impeccable.
Long may it continue
