Steeped in history, The Lion dates back about 500 years, and was built when King Charles I was on the British throne and even before the famous Gunpowder Plot of 1605. Originally constructed as a house, for centuries the quirky building has been welcoming visitors as a traditional British pub. With its low ceilings, exposed beams and homely inglenook fireplaces, it has all the charm of what you expect from a historic pub and restaurant. Listed as one of the Britain’s most important buildings, this is a slice of history set right in the heart of the Somerset countryside in a popular English village. The characterful and homely rooms offer a comfortable stay for those wanting to holiday or spend a night or two in this stunning part of the UK.

We’re also dog lovers, so your well behaved pooches will get a warm welcome.

Only reason not given 5* is that a couple of menu options had run out. What we did have was nicely cooked, generous portions and very tasty.

Always a good choice of food here , standards with a little alteration, this evening I settled for the lamb rump , my wife had the fish ( sole) .. both served with a soup starter , Great service , attentive staff , a pleasurable evening . Not the first time I’ve been here , see no reason not to return again .

Our meal was disappointing - nothing specifically wrong but certainly nothing special. Each member of the party described it as “ok” so at £96 for 3 I would describe it as “expensively mediocre”.

The sides were very poor - new potatoes were still hard and partially cooked, kale was similar and both unbuttered. Chef also needs to research ‘Moroccan Pie’ more thoroughly. My burger was ok but had a burnt outer skin, was pretty dry and not that flavourful. The ambiance of the restaurant was good and, though more thought needs to be put into the menu and preparation, we were surprised and relieved that the dessert came good!

Thanks for your review, I'm sorry you felt like we didnt 'hit the mark' on this occassion. I'm also sorry you didn't find us approachable enough to mention anything at the time so that this could be rectified for you although I'm glad you enjoyed our desserts.

If you want great food, great service and a lovely atmosphere, head to The Lion at West Pennard. Barrie the Manager has the rare skill of calm running a jam packed pub and restaurant whilst managing to make every customer feel special. We thoroughly enjoyed a lip smackingly tasty Sunday lunch. Roast lamb and roast beef, sourced from Home Farm in Kingweston and cooked perfectly and so deliciously tender. No dried up tough chewy grey meat at The Lion!! Both arrived with lots of veg relative to the time of year. My only disappointment was the roast potatoes and parsnip. They lacked a good “roasting”. Lovely server called Liam replaced them without any fuss. But as everyone knows, roast potatoes should be crispy on the outside and soft and fluffy inside. Work in progress. Puddings were fantastic! We had the frangipani with baby apples (if you haven’t had them before, hunt them down, so tasty) and the rhubarb pavlova which has the perfect balance of sweet versus tart. We cannot wait to return.

Disappointing Sunday Lunch. We had heard good things about The Lion, including rumours of a Michelin-starred chef, but the salmon & sauce were bland as were the vegetables, the yorkshire puddings overcooked, the pork belly pretty chewy and the roast potatoes appeared to have been waiting a while. Service was perfectly friendly when it appeared, but it was not the special meal we had hoped for.
The Lion at PennardResponded on 13 March 2024
Good Afternoon Rosabelle22, Thank you for taking the time to give us some feedback. We're sorry that we didn't meet your expectations. Sunday's are our busiest and most commonly complimented days so we're very sorry you didn't have the same experience. We're dissapointed you felt you could not address this with us on the day as we would happily have rectified any issues. Our turn over on a Sunday is very high so our potatoes had not been waiting a while. Apologies you felt let down by the service as well, this is something we pride ourselves on so will pass your comments on to our team. We don't and never have claimed to have a Michelin-Starred chef so we're unsure where this came from. We do hope you'll give us another try so that we may redeem ourselves. Many thanks The Lion

We were unable to have coffee at 9.00pm as the coffee machine had been cleaned, if the cleaning takes place that early at least ask the diners beforehand if they would like coffee.

We had a table booked for 12md and we’re the only customers which initially felt a it strange. We were there for about an hour and a half and still only 2 other couples came for lunch. The staff were lovely, really welcoming and chatty. Menu choices were great and good value. I had the Camembert starter and the husband had a ploughman’s. Lots of food beautifully presented and very tasty. If we lived locally we would be there again. No idea why the place isn’t really busy, it should be.

So happy to have found this wonderful friendly pub and restaurant. The food was delicious and enjoyed by all of us, a special mention for the Pork and Monkfish Tails Risotto and the poached Pear dessert as these dishes were exemplary. The service we received was friendly and efficient and we were grateful to be able to bring along one four legged little friend. It is also wonderful to have found a great place that is open on Mondays. We have already booked again and will definitely be recommending The Lion to others, including our holiday let guests who are always asking for recommendations. The only slight hiccup was the noise level as it was so busy and the lighting above our table was somewhat dazzling for one of our party. However we didn’t allow this to ruin a brilliant evening. Overall a wonderful evening and huge thanks to all of the team at The Lion 🦁

On a very cold and frosty evening this place is exactly where you need to be. Lovely log fires with a great atmosphere. Such a friendly welcome from the minute you step through the door. Every aspect of the meal was lovely, quality produce, perfectly cooked and presented. Every member of staff we dealt with was so friendly and nothing was too much trouble. Definitely would go back, in fact we did the following evening. Would also recommend.

Staff were very good and efficient. Food delivered in acceptable timeframes. Rib eye steak was of good quality but the chunky chips were not very nice. Partridge meat was fine but veg were significantly under cooked and hard. The soup starter was lovely. Quality of food rather mixed.

Outstanding food. Some of the best we have ever tasted. We were on a short break staying in the village and wandered down to the pub as it had been recommended by the owner of the cottage we were staying in. We were expecting pub grub and having eaten previously at a number of Michelin and fine dining restaurants were bowled over by the quality of the food we ate. Excellent quality, at Surrey pub prices and very welcoming to our dog as well. Thank you and definitely recommend.
