British
Steeped in history, The Lion dates back about 500 years, and was built when King Charles I was on the British throne and even before the famous Gunpowder Plot of 1605. Originally constructed as a house, for centuries the quirky building has been welcoming visitors as a traditional British pub. With its low ceilings, exposed beams and homely inglenook fireplaces, it has all the charm of what you expect from a historic pub and restaurant. Listed as one of the Britain’s most important buildings, this is a slice of history set right in the heart of the Somerset countryside in a popular English village. The characterful and homely rooms offer a comfortable stay for those wanting to holiday or spend a night or two in this stunning part of the UK.

We’re also dog lovers, so your well behaved pooches will get a warm welcome.

We went there for a christnas date and we were not disappointed. The staff were fabulous, the atmosphere was brilliant and the food was amazing.

At one point a young lady got on the piano and played christmas songs, it made it feel so much more like christmas especially in the times we find ourselves in.

The staff were so helpful and fun. It felt like you were so welcome even though we had never been there.

Would highly recommend!!!!!!

Love the venue and general ambience and generally the food whilst pub grub is very good . However on this occasion I had a distinct impression we were late in the service programme as the turkey main was simply too dry with a lack on any sauce or gravy and on request a minuscule amount was provided . I will go again because it is one of the best locals but this was a bad day in the kitchen .

The lunch menu was very limited and poor quality. The salmon was dry, the fries were over cooked and hard and the house salad was 2 small bits of lettuce and 4 bits of sun dried tomatoes. Not worth £15

I took my mother for Sunday lunch, we treat ourselves to lunch occasionally.. and this was a ‘treat’ …. we had Salmon and Tempeh followed by a delicious dessert. Look forward to visiting again.

It happened to be really noisy on the night we were here as a large table of about ten people were eating. Some of the women had really loud irritating laughs and loud voices and this spoilt our evening.

Also I chose the Beetroot Wellington as I thought it would not contain nuts and unfortunately it did before I realisedit was too late. So I was ill the following day, as I have Diverticular disease and cannot eat nuts. I know I should have asked.!!!

Apart from that everything was lovely.

Lovely pub/restaurant,tastefully refurbished. Menu was small and to be honest, misleading. (I didn't expect 'potato fondant' to be a boiled potato!)
I had monkfish which didn't have a herb crust either. Other than that, the starter and dessert was amazing. The girl who served us was fantastic! Knew her wine's and beers and couldn't do enough to help us! Very good.

Very good salmon starter. Venison pie was good but could have done with a bit more meat and less pastry. Mulled wine jelly very good. Two of our party found the steak difficult to cut but another found it fine. Bar area very comfortable but there’s nowhere to put your drink!

I ordered the beef dish expecting it to be feartherblade and it was no more than a piece of steak and was hard to cut through with very little veg .
We were offered tea/coffee but no offer of looking at the sweet menu .
Even though they did take off £10.00 from the bill I feel this had ruined the evening .
My husband had the bugger and was okay .others that we were with had the belly pork which was okay but again very little veg so probably safe to say at least 3 of us went home hungry that night .
So we won’t be returning to eat there again.

What a surprise to find a pub serving such superb food. We had the best soup we have tasted for years - Jerusalem artichoke and wild mushroom - sublime! The rest of our meal was delicious and of a high standard. We were visiting the area from Surrey but will have to return.

We chose this place because it was in the Michelin guide. I think it’s a bit smarter than simple pub grub. Staff were friendly and polite and service was quick. It would have been nice to have the fire lit in the main dining room but I understand why it couldn’t be due to their not being full.

Absolutely superb hospitality and so, so dog friendly too. I’d say the perfect pub atmosphere. Comfortable seating for relaxing drinks (an excellent stock of ales) and fantastic food. Honestly couldn’t wish for anything more. Thoroughly recommend The Lion for fine dining with that relaxing environment. Thanks to all the team, well done.

Lovely first night of a get together weekend. Great meal and friendly staff helping us out with late guests. Loved the burger and saved enough room for the fabulous sticky ginger/butterscotch pudding. Nice choice of wines too.

5 mins down the road from our Air BnB and dog friendly!! Really struggled to find many around here. The atmosphere, food, service was AMAZING!!
The owner came over to greet our dog and spent a good 10 minutes talking to us which was really nice.
Recommend this place with or without a dog!

Our second visit
Obviously difficult for everyone in the country trying to run a restaurant at the moment - mad busy demand with staffing levels remaining a struggle throughout pingdemics plus deliveries haphazard so The Lion are doing brilliantly - thank you - though they had to cancel one of our bookings this trip, we understand

Fabulous meal again. A really varied and original menu. The mix of flavours is amazing. We tried the cauliflower burger, it has so much flavour, not at all what was expected. Looking forward to visiting again.

The Lion has managed to upgrade to a chic contemporary eating place without losing the pleasant traditional feel of the old inn. Staff are smiley and welcoming, service was pleasant and efficient and the food was tasty and well presented with decent Sauvignon to accompany. What more can you ask (except maybe a few more vegetables)?

The food was ok. Not sure if it was because it was the end of service when we ate but definitely style over substance.
The salmon was over cooked and the deconstructed cheese cake looked very pretty but the taste didn’t match the styling. It’s a lovely looking pub and the serving staff were great.

The food was fantastic, beautifully cooked and tasted great. However despite the restaurant promoting itself as a family place to eat, it felt more like a place for adults or older children. The menu for children was scant. My daughters just wanted a nice meal aimed at them and instead has a composite of an adult meal and a child’s meal. They wanted fish and chips and were presented with sea bass in foil. The fish was great but full of bones which they found overwhelming and difficult to deal with which put them of the meal and the experience. May I suggest that you offer both a sophisticated menu as well as a more basic good quality menu that isn’t a struggle for young children to deal with.
