The Local Cafe and Restaurant
At the Local, the hospitality, culinary and baking students learn in the restaurant as part of their embedded courses as well as their field placement's under the direction of our Faculty, and Chef and Restaurant Technicians.
Our menus are inspired by the international flavour profiles that represent the incredibly rich diversity of those who call Scarborough home. While sourcing locally available ingredients from the bounty of this Province, we have designed an interactive dining experience for our guests, featuring a seasonally inspired market style lunch, internationally inspired dinner menus with nightly features and a weekend brunch.
Join us in the restaurant or visit the cafe for coffee, baked goods or takeaway meals. Our students look forward to welcoming you!
Centennial alumnus heartily recommending this hidden gem, particularly the lunch buffet which sources local ingredients with the seasons and follows Centennial's Global Citizenship and Equity initiative!
steak for brunch was kinda cold & the cups had reissued on it but overall nice experience good price for the variety
Food is fresh and tasty, it's good that it's possible to taste different dishes in small amounts.
The environment is little bit chaotic because of many students around. Sometimes the music is too loud for dining or is it for students room listen to???
great lunch buffet and service, excellent food, great price!
Great service, buffet style and delicious food
I do not recall you have soup. You may add this on your buffet menu go along with your homemade bread and butter.
Overall, food is good and fresh. only roast pork is a bit overcooked, hard to cut and chew.
To the staff who serve us and who work in the kitchen, good job, good attitude!
Great local sourced food. Great hospitality. Love it.
Firstly, the food, choices, tastes are outstanding - as always!!!!
I am a little hesitant in bringing this to your attention but I know you will take it with a grain of salt.
I brought a friend who had never been to the restaurant - we sat at a booth close to the window.
We may have been mistaken but we thought we saw one of the student chefs checking the meat with
When lunch was nearly done there was a student chef outside - he was not cooking but he had on the
cooking clothes and he was touching his nose and face.
I know he was not touching food but it is a negative perception seen by guests.
I brought a friend who had never been before and she is the one who brought it to my attention.
Sorry, three more points.
1. George Brown College has their students wear starched white shirts and black pants - very professional looking. Maybe you might consider all students wearing the same type of black pants and black shoes?
2. There are always many students around the front desk, bar area. It just looks as if they are milling about with nothing to do. Just a little noticeable.
3. I know it may not be possible to do anything about it but the restaurant is noisy. Being over 50 years old our hearing is not as good and we have difficulty hearing each other speak. Would it be possible to lower the music? As well is there anyway you could find out where the quietest location is?
I have tried the far corner and the booths but I am not sure which is the quietest.
Overall, I cannot tell you how wonderful the food choices, flavour, service is - absolutely outstanding - I come for lunch at least once a month and usually more frequently.
Everyone that I bring are also impressed.
Keep up the great work!
Sorry - one more point - my daughter is Vegan and I was just wondering if there could be more vegan choices. I have not brought her yet but would like to do so soon. (She is not in the city now)
My family and I enjoyed the food and environment. I will go back again. Staffs are very friendly.
Not many students show smile when serving the customers.
The food was terrible. Pasta was too salty , Salmon was too smelly ( no spice or salt) Server did not clean my dishes. Terrible experience so far. There wasn’t lot of food option. Never going back there.
Excellent food for great value. Very comfortable setting.
Another outstanding meal at the Local. We will visit again for the weekend brunch
We have a great time trying out a couple of "Tapas Style" dishes. Shrimp Skewers was surprisingly tasty. Miso Marinated Cod has the Asian infusion, visually appealing and tastes great. The beef striploin was tender, confit fingerling potato was a good match, however, the tomatillo sauce is a bit of mismatch. The Romesco sauce Pork Ribs is a fun dish, a play on Doritos flavour, well done!
Whipped chocolate pot de creme maybe is a bit heavy/sweet for most people. It would be nice if there is something to go with, like a small slice of sponge cake. But on the other hand, it's so smooth and I do enjoy it. The chocolate cappuccino sorbet is interesting, first, you taste the chocolate and have the coffee aftertaste.
Passionfruit Mojito is very refreshing, especially for a hot summer day.
The food was amazing. Miso cod, grilled asparagus, home-baked bread were our favourites but all the dishes were excellent. The staff are training to serve the hospitality industry so they appreciate feedback - we had nothing but positive things to say about the service and quality of food preparation.
Fantastic food, great service, very good value. Tables are a bit cramped and there were little flies on the wall. Will definitely go back.
Too noisy and students not assigned to anyone take. All over the place
We were very pleased that Marianna looked after us. Will not hesitate to recommend friends to the Cafe Restaurant.
We had an awesome experience. The cleanliness of the environment together with the ambiance was amazing. The food and service were outstanding. We enjoyed each and every item, WE are considering returning for supper.
In addition we visited the eight floor and we were blow away. WE never knew this facility existed. A Scarborough Gem.
The restaurant is closed today but there are no indication at all. Called ahead, voice mail said to check website. Website didn't mention any closure. Followed the link on website and successfully made reservation on Opentable.
Making all the way to the restaurant only to find out the building was locked and the restaurant was closed.
Love the food selection this time - was great with seafood additions!
we just loved the new summer tapas menu, and ordered 3 per person!
So good; small portions, great value, great taste!!!
Our server Gunika was very good, kind and nice.
Really great dinner; thank you : 0
Great food at a very reasonable price. It is a learning environment for students, so very happy to support the Local.
buffet lunch not much choices, the servers not experienced, Michael, the in charge is wonderful. Overall pretty satisfy, if there are more choices of food, it will be much much better.
Have visited The Local couple of times, Nice place, good service, but being part of a culinary school I’d expect food to be better prepared than it is, ingredients they use are fine BTW, they just need to taste and sample the food as they cook it to season it and cook it for longer time or les time they normally do if needed. All in all it is a good value.
Great brunch. Bold coffee.Fun atmosphere. Lots of helpful staff, a little doe-eyed at times. You can tell it's a learning environment but I feel that is all part of the experience. The food quality and price point is outstandng
Good place for dining and parking facility is availabe and close by. Good value for lunch and brunch.
The Boston Bibb salad was amazing with blueberries and pickled beets, the mussels were also very good, so was the burger.
The shoe-string fries were brown and burned. Consider switching to big chunky fries, which would be easier to make without burning, and contain less oil. The local sodas and drinks were outstanding.
Service was also very good, friendly and attentive.
I enjoyed the variety of choices in the lunch buffet. The server was extra helpful and very accommodating when my colleague who is a vegan requested to have her veggies be served without butter. That was very much appreciated! Love how my cappuccino was served - nice presentation and very pleasing to the eyes! I'd go back again soon for sure.
Local restaurant offers great service and value for the weekend buffet!
A hidden gem in our neighbourhood. The servers, chefs, etc. are all students at Centennial College, but are all learning various aspects of the hospitality industry and are very interesting to talk to. Service was quite attentive, but some allowances must be made for the fact they everyone is "learning" on the job and speed of service may not quite match high class eateries. There were four of us dining together, and we had a thoroughly enjoyable evening.
Wonderful food, lots of variety and great value! Will be back many times more
Great food experience for a quick bite or a full meal. Ingredients are always fresh and cooked to perfection.
Very helpful staff, good food and clean restaurant
The food was excellent. I am a flexitarian and prefer more vegetables.
There were so many choices and varied ones as well.
The salmon was so moist and delicious - I confess I had 2 pieces.
The quinoa was very flavourful.
The choice of having an omelette was a nice touch - my colleague had it and really enjoyed it.
The student wait staff were personable but not intrusive.
They were quick to refill water glasses and ask if we would like refills of coffee and tea.
Dessert - good choices - always lovely to have fresh fruit.
I had the apple pie and it was delicous.
My only complaint is the music and the noise due to the type of floor.
I have a little loss of hearing and with the loudness of the music and the type of floor and walls I always have difficulty hearing what my fellow dinner guests are saying.
I wonder if you could lower the music level just a little?
Overall the food in my estimation is better than before with great variety.
The food/service everything seems to be better every time I come.
Keep up the wonderful standards.
The new spring menu is spectacular!!! We loved the mussels, halibut, soup and salads.
The only comment I would have to improve would be about French fries with paired mussels; this deep fried Canadian farm staple does NOT match the delicate taste of mussels. I suggest changing it to salad, quinoa, rice, or anything else. My request to serve it with a salad was granted; thank you : )
Amazing food and service. A real gem.
Amazing food; fresh local ingredients; steak was wonderfully medium as requested, beet salad was amazing... I would prefer the fires to be more chunky, not shoe-strings, as they soak too much oil and get overdone easily. Service very friendly.
The food was great, tasty, and fresh. The service was enthusiastic (they are students, and tried hard) everyone was friendly. We were not rushed. Highly recommended!
Very good food will come back again with friends. Love it.
