The Looking Glass
This restaurant closes permanently on Dec 22nd and will not reopen.
Another delicious lunch, excellent value and lovely choices. Simply can't understand why it is not busier.
The food was amazing, really tasty but the atmosphere didn't feel very inviting or cosy for a Sunday lunch. The decor feels quite DIY and could probably have a bit more money spent on the aesthetics. Perhaps this feels differently in the evening. The staff didn't seem to know much about the menu when we asked what was in some of the drinks and the side dishes to the roast, which was disappointing. It would have been nice to have that knowledge front of house and match the obvious passion for food that was coming from the kitchen. I would highly recommend the food to people but not sure if we will be returning.
This is a great little place, service is good and the food is fabulous. Using locally sourced and foraged ingredients makes it all the more special. Would highly recommend.
Disappointed that Brisket had been cooked in an inappropriate way for that cut of meat which needs slow cooking to be tender whereas we were served very fatty chewy meat which in no way resembled what one expects of a Sunday roast.
It would have been helpful had we known that the restaurant closes in the afternoon as we made a 2.30 pm reservation and for most of the time were the only two people in the restaurant.
Such a fantastic evening. Both service and food were excellent. We will be back many times.
Amazing brunch at the looking glass with family. Everything is cooked in house and fresh to order, absolutely delicious!
Had a lovely evening with 2 other couples, it was a Thursday night and it was curry night. Lovely fresh home made taste, the nan bread and cauliflower rice were very light and fresh, not at all like the curry you get from an Indian where they make vats of a sauce then add the meat of your choice. Would go againto try their other delights.
A hidden gem
Cute venue nice decor and pleasant ambience, sweet waitress. The scotch egg starter was delicious but the main monkfish was a bit dissapointing , described as with a chilli sauce the sauce was more like butter and had no taste and the salad was not dressed so all in all the dish it was a bit dry and lacking flavour ,a shame as the fish was cooked nicely . Some of the flavours and foods described 9n the menu were not as impressive as they sounded. However it was nice that it was all locally and seasonally sourced ... could just work on more punchy flavours .
Just tried The Looking Glass after seeing good reviews.
Wasn’t disappointed the food was superb .
We had the Slow cooked braised beef and it just melted in your mouth and the flavour was superb !!! how beef should be be cooked and taste .
The staff were really pleasant and made us feel very welcome.
Will definitely go back again and also recommend highly.
Thank you for a great meal 👍.
Adrian and Victoria.
As a stranger to Cheltenham, I looked upo a number of restaurant web sites and The Looking Glass looked attractive and interesting. In truth, it is OK and the other customers appeared to be enjoying themselves. As a result, it was noisy and personally, we, two mature couples, found the menu challenging and we all chose the same main course, sort of the least worse. Overall the food was satisfactory but not good enough for us to wish to return and the ambience less than appealing. Maybe we were the wrong customers.
Food was fantastic as usual. Lovely staff and relaxing atmosphere.
Wonderful fresh food, always enjoy going to this restaurant
All the food was genuinely delicious, we all ate different dishes and were all very happy with our choices. It was excellent value for a high quality restaurant experience. Friendly service and a relaxed atmosphere.
Went for the Greek Night. Everything from the welcome we received to leaving was really good. A thoroughly enjoyable evening, lovely staff and good service. We will definitely be back and will certainly recommend the restaurant.
We had an amazing meal. The menu is extensive, with the dishes made using local organic produce wherever possible. The food was well prepared, tasty and served artistically. We will be returning soon.
A couple of friends recommended the looking glass to me so we thought we'd take the kids and head there for our anniversary evening. The waitress was friendly and attentive and the food was really good. It was a really happy evening and we were really touched that they reduced the bill for the prosecco because they overheard us wishing each other a happy anniversary - really kind. We would definitely go again.
Took a friend, a wheelchair and a toddler. Amazing food as always, friendly service, can’t recommend this place enough!!!
We had a fabulous meal and service was really good. Fish was amazing - fresh and really well cooked. Only down was they had run out of beef which my husband really wanted!
Starters were average mains better and pudding a humble ice cream Sunday was good. Service was good and the people were helpful and nice. Overall nothing really to grumble about. It just could have been better. Rag out needed a little more sauce to coat the tagliatelle and the sauce on my rib eye steak was bland.
It was my first visit and I was impressed with the food and the staff. It's rather like a cafe rather than a restaurant but nice. I am going to book again for my Birthday lunch on Thursday.
Perfect for a catch up with friends. A fabulous lunch for under £20. Excellent food as always. Thank you Leon.
We spent a thoroughly enjoyable evening at this unique little restaurant. The food was delicious, service very personable and ambience restful and friendly. We will definitely return.
Fabulous dinner on Friday evening. The restaurant was reasonably busy but the service was very good and the waitress was very pleasant and friendly. We shared three tasters to start, all lovely, and the braised beef was excellent. Will look forward to visiting again.
1st visit and very pleased. Food is of a high quality as was the service.
Our second visit and once again the food and service was superb. Had noisy couple next to us towards the end but still had a great evening.
Delicious brunch with my daughter and a friend. We had herb and cheese omelettes with bacon which came with a substantial salad leaf garnish. It was so nice I came home and tried to replicate it for breakfast the next day! The waiting staff are attentive and pleasant and it was good value for money. Highly recommended!
Splendid menu. Very accommodating server. She answered all questions. Home made elderflower cordial was delicious. 3 small plates shared to start. Absolutely delicious. Stunning actually. Partner had Chicken and I had 50 day aged beef. Both were absolutely delightful. We both enjoyed every mouthful. I sent my compliments to the chef. We would not hesitate to return. We both enjoyed every morsel of each course. Dessert was also very special. Thank you The Looking Glass. We will see you again please don’t change too much
Everything came across so right from the service and the important quality of the food. Excellent will be back.
Good choice of food on the menu, tasted brilliant and service was fantastic
Amazing restaurant, locally sourced at great prices
Delicious starter plates. Unfortunately the mussels were not available and the turbot was overcooked and dry. The rump steak was tough.
Excellent service, excellent food and all at a reasonable price, what more could one want. Some of the nicest mussels I’ve had in a long time.
We had two courses from the set Sunday lunch menu, which were very tasty. The roast potatoes could have been better, the skins were a bit chewy but apart from that it was a delicious meal, with good wine and a relaxed atmosphere. Looking forward to choosing something from the main menu when we next visit!
Interesting locally sourced menu. Loved the tapas as starters but would suggest an option to just buy one ( could pay slightly more eg £4.50 each) rather than the 3 for £12? Fantastic main courses and delicious puddings! Will definitely return 😊
Great little restaurant in an old butcher’s shop. Sensibly priced wine list. Delicate but flavoursome portions. Definitely worth a visit.
Clearly a lot of effort had gone into sourcing and preparing our meal. Highly recommended
Really excellent meal. Everything was good
Wonderful meal in a fabulous little "local". The team who run this restaurant have put their heart and soul into the place and it really shows through in the food and the staff. Brilliant concept with the entrée tapa selection and really good value. This is the kind of local, small, non-chain place that needs supporting by all of Cheltenham.
What a lovely little restaurant just on the outskirts of Cheltenham in the classy Charlton Kings area of the town. Free parking is available directly across the road accessed through the entrance leading up to St Edwards School.
We went to the Looking Glass on a Tuesday evening and it was very quite. We were the only booking that evening although another couple took a table later in the evening. However, this did not affect us as we welcomed the quiet environment and full attention of the staff.
The Looking Glass prides itself in providing locally sourced food whenever possible. And it showed in the excellent quality of your dinners. The menu is not vast, but it has something for everyone. Two of particularly enjoyed the "Small Plates" where we had 5 very tasty Tapas type dishes. These I would describe as "luxury" Tapas. They were all gorgeous. Our fellow guests each had a Rump Steak and Fish Cakes between them. Both excellent as was the Malbec Wine from the wine list. The deserts were to "die for" with the Cheesecake being the most popular in our small group of four.
An excellent evening out. Great food and nice ambience. Great Service too.
