We had an outstanding family lunch on Christmas Eve and everything about our experience was outstanding. Amazing food and cooking, incredibly warm and attentive service in a wonderful setting with great ambiance.
We had a great experience dining here and felt very safe in their well organised outdoor pods. The chef came out to see us and was chatty and informative. The young waiters were polite and efficient. We would go back again...when open!
We had the most lovely evening meal there and the landlord is friendly and Jake the Barman, The service was very good, I would highly recommend the Malsters and the food was amazing to. Will definitely be going back.
Lovey tasty food, great friendly service. Felt very safe in these odd times. Great time in the pod, with a nice festive view. Highly recommend and will be back. Thanks
Fantastic meal -loved it
The chef came out to check we were happy -meant a lot
We are regular diners. The food is always outstanding, the service excellent, the ambience soothing. We love the pub. The landlord Gary is very welcoming as all his staff. Brilliant pub, wonderful food. Ask for 'catch of the day'. Highly recommended.
Delicious food and lovely atmosphere. Our waiter, Jack, was attentive and kind.
Superb food in a lovely relaxed atmosphere with a charasmatic landlord.
Another absolutely delicious meal, fantastic service, great atmosphere, could not fault it, best roast chicken lunch I think I’ve ever had and could’ve got through a jug of that yummy velvety gravy all to myself. Slight mix up on the bill at the end where an extra round of drinks were added in error but the issue was cleared up in no time with credit registered for our next visit. We can’t wait to come back a third time and know they’ll be many more to follow that! :)
Excellent lunch. Fantastic service, excellent ambience - I’ll be back. Given the circumstances I really can’t believe lockdown has helped or that there are any constraints
The food is interesting and tastes delicious! Very accommodating staff who made us very welcome in these difficult times.
Love the new winter menu! As always friendly helpful staff great to be open again!
Me and my wife Rosemary had another excellent lunch in this rural gem. We both had Gary's steak and kidney pudding which we have to admit was the best we have ever eaten. We have re-booked for next week. Supreme.
Me and my wife have been going to the Maltsters Arms since the turn of the year. We are most impressed by the quality of the food and the simple but varied range on the menu. The proprietor Gary works very hard and is accomplished in the kitchen. His staff are polite, attentive but not intrusive. It is a very welcoming clean establishment. As soon as we are able to we'll book a table. The beers are well kept and the furniture comfortable. It is without a shadow one of our favourite pubs.
We were the last table on a very busy Sunday. In the crazy times we’re living in 2 families out for last Sunday lunch.
Sadly lunches has been so popular chef had run out but owner rallied to ensure we had scrumptious food! A generous bottle of wine, a cheese board all given to us with out even needing to raise the issue. It’s great to have another independent restaurant locally.
Thank you Gary and team and we’ll see you just as soon as we can!
A great deal of effort had gone into decorating The Maltsters tastefully for autumn/Halloween theme.
Gary was a welcoming and helpful host, he demonstrated a passion for the food he serves.
Our evening meal was tasty and well presented, as was our breakfast the following morning.
The Maltsters guest room was clean, comfortable and, like the pub, attention has been paid to it's decor.
will not be returning unless new management. Food disappointing, service slow and owner aggressive and intimidating. Do not recommend
Thank you for your feedback. I was extremely disturbed by your account until I reviewed the CCTV video and audio. You failed to mention that you didn't pay for the whole meal and drinks and asked to leave, due to you causing chaos to the service by re-seating yourselves at a pre-booked table for six and snapping your fingers at waiters and shouting across the room for drinks. (Totally disregarding our CV-19 strategy). Correct, you shall not be returning! Regards The owners
Food ok. Couldn't get pudding as kitchen had shut even though we were booked in for lunch at 13:30. Would have been good to be warned about this.
Edit: 01/11/2020 19:55 - I am very surprised about the response below (as well as the quite unpleasant private response that was also sent). We were there on the dot of 13:30 but the previous occupants of our table hadn't finished. Staff were apologetic and we waited for the table to be ready. I simply think it might have been good if one of the staff had made us aware that we would need to order puddings in advance.
because you arrived late for your booking. Our last orders for food at lunch time are clearly displayed on open table, our website, social media, google & on the sign on our door. We give tables 20mins grace in busy periods, but we still seated & served you. You ignored the fact we needed to close for covid fogging.Quite frankly, if you think that attempting to sabotage a small family business bcoz of your entitled approach to booking times, check your moral compass. Not welcome here!
Apart from three braying elderly women it was a memorable lunch
Excellent food - ate in outside pod so felt very safe. Very good service.
Absolutely wonderful evening. Delicious food, amazing staff and great atmosphere. I really rate the plant based options, which are scrummy. Can’t wait to come back again.
there was no choice for Vegetarians for mail meal. So I had a side dish.
otherwise, was very perfect.
we loved it and will go back again.
Booking was really easy. You just go on line and choose outdoor, although it would have been good if this was made clear on the web site. I had to ring the pub to understand this.
We ate in one of the outdoor pods. Outside was cold and torrential rain. Inside was sheltered and cosy. We had to turn the heater down for a while! Our pod was easy to identify as it had a little blackboard with my name on it.
The service was excellent with full table service. I didn't have to go in the pub at all.
I am over sixty and this was the first time I had ventured out for a meal since February. I felt totally safe and thoroughly enjoyed the evening.
If you have special dietary requirements I would recommend looking at the menu before booking. Also, the beer selection was quite limited.
Lovely pub - ate in one of their lovely pods outside. Food was excellent & the service friendly & efficient. Dogs loved it too!
Pub has had a revamp inside and is decorated nicely with some quirky additions. Like an outdoor chess set, heated outdoor pods for eating and a full size storm trooper statue!! Food was good but the serving staff we found to be a little inexperienced. However, the new owner was very much on top of things and keen to ensure we had the best experience possible. Well worth another visit!
First visit with Gary as the owner and since Covid lockdown as have been shielded. Food and service exemplary. We booked a pod which was not quite finished and a bit of problem initially with the heater not functioning, but Taz kept at it until it was working and couldn't do enough to help us. My duck confit and husband's hake done to perfection and really nice to be able to have a decent wine by the glass and carafe, rather than having to have a whole bottle. Going again with friends Tuesday!! Melanie Free
Excellent arrangements for the reserved table and a great welcome. Service overall was of a generally high standard and the quality of the food was very good with the soup in particular being outstanding but the quantity of that was just too great for me having a main course to follow - but an ideal l meal on its own.
The 'pod' was quite cosy although my wife eventually began to feel the cold a bit. and of course we were pretty close to the road but traffic only passes slowly and not noisily so it was a problem.
We'd definitely go again.
Thank you for your lovely review. We have just added doors to the pods this week.
Waited 45 minutes to be served ...only two staff on duty , no apologies for the long wait and food ok but confit of duck almost too tough to cut through !
Only as we were leaving did we discover the pub had only reopened after unforeseen electrical problems. If only they’d said all this at the outset we might have been more understanding.
According to our booking system, once your order was taken you waited 22 minutes for your order. We don't consider that a long time for freshly prepared food. Your husband mentioned that you didn't like the duck,an apology was given & item was removed from bill. Your husband was offered a bottle of wine on next visit, he seemed happy with the resolution, so puzzled about the lack of apology and also the reported waiting time as your total visit time was 68 mins . Again apologies for the duck.
I would not recommend the baby back of ribs - mine were done to a crisp and I sent them back only to be told that the chef said they'd be alright in the middle - well, they weren't. Whatever happened to the customer always being right? I was disappointed. Saying that, the outside pods are nice with blankets. cushions and a heater.
We are sorry you didn't enjoy your Ribs and that the burnt ends were not to your taste. These are prepared using a traditional souse-vide technique (under water), then only the ends finished over a flame grill (to achieve the famous burnt end taste/texture that make this dish famous). Sorry that it wasn't to your taste. if you would've asked, we would've changed your dish for another.
Had a great night. Food and drink was excellent. Gary and Donna are doing a fantastic job at this lovely pub/ restaurant. The young front of house staff were attentive and professional. We'll be back soon.
Thank you Peter our team are great arent they?
Lovely food and lovely experience in their heated outdoor pod.
Thank you for your lovely review, staff are very happy with it
We had a lovely experience trying out the new outdoor pods. The pods were well lit, very cosy and there were blankets and cushions available for our comfort.
The staff were extremely friendly and the service was lovely.
Our food was delicious and the servings were very generous, overall we had a lovely evening and felt very safe and secure with all of the Covid-19 security in place.
Thank you Polly, its really nice to know our team's efforts dont go totally unnoticed. Ill pass it on.
We dined in the outdoor pods and it was lovely. It was a fairly mild evening, but anything colder and I would of liked to be in one with a heater. Had the vegan burger and it was delicious. Would and have recommended to my friends.
wow thank you sarah
Second time back in a couple of months and although the service is still quite slow (and I do sympathise as it must be terrifically challenging guessing how many customers there might be in these tricky times and especially when so many will only come to eat outside so not surprising only one serving both food and drinks) but (a) he did his level best and (b) the food on this occasion was terrific. New chef we heard and all the four different things we ordered were first rate. Slightly eccentric little outside bubbles now installed to sit in but good on them for investing and trying.
Very disappointed as we ordered Sunday roast beef and it was inedible, the potatoes were like rocks. Beef was not seasoned. We ended up sending the food back to the kitchen. Definitely not a good value for money place. Also spoke to the manager, who said his usual guest argue over their food when returned. Not sure that’s a good sign for any repeat business. Definitely won’t be coming back or recommending. Overrated...
There is actually no Sunday Roast on a Sunday. You certainly didn't speak to this manager.
I was surprised to be directed to order our food quickly upon arrival with no explanation. It was not a welcoming start. I ordered the roast beef under Sunday Roasts on the menu, but failed to read the notes. As a consequence I received two baguettes with roast beef in them, two roast potatoes and no vege. I think this item should not be listed under Sunday roasts, otherwise it can be a little misleading, albeit I admit that I did not read the menu correctly. However the quality and taste of the food was excellent. On balance, I will not visit The Maltsters Arms for a Sunday lunch again, as there are many other pubs in the area that are more welcoming and with no ambiguity with the menu.
Hi Chris Thank you for your positive feedback about the food and the quality of ingredients. Our menu doesn't have a "Sunday Roast" section as we took the decision to not aim to provide a traditional Sunday roast, because as you rightly point out, there are plenty of places you may visit in the area for English Sunday Roasts. I hope we see you again for more of our French themed menu.
Had a lovely evening at the Maltsters, good atmosphere friendly greetings. The bar area was slightly querky, we think the owner might be a bit of a starwars fan...The menu had a good selection with something for everyone. We both had steak, which was delicious! However could have done with a little bit more garnish. Overall a very pleasant experience, thank you!
Thank you for your excellent review. Yes, indeed we love Star wars, Dr Who, music and food. What more could you ask for? Our Steak Frites is a traditional dish, which does what it says on the tin, however a quick note to a waiter will assure you of the chef dressing your plate a little more. We prepare everything from fresh, so there are always garnishes around. We look forward to seeing you again and taking up your garnish challenge.
Unfortunately they had ran out of both the desert and the vanilla ice cream my partner wanted for dessert by 7.30 on at Saturday evening. That said the food we did have was outstanding and reasonably priced.
One bad point.... it was so dark in the restaurant we, along with others, had to read the menu with the torches on our phones.... 🔦 Lol 😂
I would return with out a second thought but I may take my own candle 🕯 next time.... 😂
Remove Romantic lighting...check!
Lovely friendly waitrons, chef even came out to check on how meal was. Fantastic food, although a limited choice. Great atmosphere albeit with all the Halloween decorations🎃🦇😊
Thank you. Nice dining experience
A very enjoyable lunch with a limited but varied menu with something to suit all tastes.
