Char-grilled English 8oz sirloin steak served to your liking with our crispy French fries. With garlic or herb butter & Dijon & honey sauce
Fish Finger Bap, Fries & Slaw
Fishfingers in breadcrumbs on a baked bread roll. If its good enough for the BA club lounge its good enough for us
Chicken fried frogs legs, tossed in cornflour, served will aioli, lemon & rocket
Ordered Escargot and Cuisses de grenouille as starters. The snails were cooked spot on, not rubbery at all. The butter could of had a little more garlic in it however. The frogs legs were cooked perfectly, tender, often when they are over cooked they curl off the bone but these were not. The aoli tasted good.
For mains had a minted lamb burger which was fantastic, cooked perfectly, bun looked and tasted home made. A guest had the Wookie burger, was good, beef slightly over done but that’s being picky.
Service was good, dined outside due to restrictions but still lovely atmosphere. Our waiter was knowledgeable about the menu, attentive, and had a great demeanour.
Good wine selection too.
Worth the journey and will definitely return.
Limited but interesting menu. Lovely pod to sit in to eat so felt very private. Excellent service.
This was my first experience of the new people having used The Maltsters on very many occasions in the past. I was therefore unsure of what to expect. The booking of the table and the follow up reminder were sensible and easy to use. The drinks order was taken very soon after arrival and delivered quickly. The food order was also taken soon after this in an effective and efficient way. The food which arrived also soon afterwards was well presented, hot and plentiful. All this happened on a fine but windy day when only the outside was able to be used. We were not hassled and were able to follow up further orders as and when we wanted. A very good first experience under trying conditions. Well done.
When the establishment contacts you demanding that you take down a factual review because its " libellous" tells you everything you need to know. I'll spare you all the details as its descended into "he said she said" land.
You claimed in your review thAt you saw “a rat in a dog bowl by the kitchen door”..... then in a private message stated that it may have been “a field mouse” or a “catnip toy”. You also claimed in the private message to currently “be going out of your (sic) way to support businesses that you wouldn’t normally visit”.... you claim to not have brought this to any of our attention, but continue to finish your meal, then state that you “saw a rat” on a public review site. Hmmmmm
Lovely place to go for dinner! Great food and great staff! Landlord was very accommodating, generally nice people all round! Can’t wait to come again!
WE WILL BE COMING AGAIN.
AND TELL ALL OUR FRIENDS WHAT GREAT FOOD, EASY TO PARK, COVID FRIENDLY,
BLANKETS FOR KNEE WAS A LOVELY TOUCH AND VERY WELCOME.
I didn't attend but my colleagues had a lovely lunch catch up. Good food (not great, but good) and good service. Thank you.
excellent choice of food options , very well cooked and presented.
Gary and the team were very welcoming and extremely accommodating given the fact we arrived an hour prior to our booking!! Nothing was too much trouble and the young man who was designated to look after us did a fine job!!
A varied lunchtime menu was offered albeit one or two items were unavailable, Specials were also available.
Once our party of 4 had chosen we sat back and enjoyed the outdoor facility which fortunately was an open marquee that kept us the right side of 40mph winds!!
Our party enjoyed the food which was delivered in decent time. Maybe hotter plates would have kept the food warmer for longer but this has always been a little "bugbear" with us at other restaurants......
Overall a great experience and thank you to Gary and staff.
So pleased pubs are able
To open again so we were very happy sitting outside on a rather cold blowy day but the terrace is sheltered and there are plenty of blankets to go round. Food was not as warm as it could have been but that was probably because we were outside. Lovely Camden IPA went down a treat!
Overall satisfactory, clearly after a return from lockdown previous service will not resume immediately but an admirable effort none the less
We have been quite a few times and always enjoyed, the reason I did not give 5 stars is we walked to the pub and happened to be running a few minutes late, when I rang them to inform we would be approximately 20 minutes late the response was 'This would cause no end of problems', which is not the best of responses for customer service! When arrived all ran smoothly and all serving very polite and the food was good, I just suggest they work on whoever answers the 'phone.
We have eaten there before and were really disappointed this time, food really wasn't up to its normal standard and we left one of the mains
Service was awful, the poor lad who knew what he was doing had worked 42 hours that weekend alone so we werent complaining to him, but it was just him and one other who really didn't know what he was doing
I realise staff turnover has been an issue since lockdown but this lad had obviously had very little training and thrown in at the deep end with no support other than the one waiter who was basically doing it all
Unfortunately the meal quality doesn't encourage us to return any time soon, we would let the service go as we realise those challenges at the present time
I’m sorry his rather nastily worded review just isn’t true. As you can see, from the other reviews from THE BANK HOLIDAY Monday. We had four front of house staff on, a girl & 3 boys, 1 boy was on a trial shift. The only complaint was from someone who complained there was too much garlic in their Moulles Frites and no cream. (Wrong dish). There was however, 40mph wind though & a hailstorm. Nobody except me worked anywhere near 42hrs. Please tell the truth in future your review is libellous.
We had one of the pods at the front which was super. Sunday lunch was great, just missing veggies as standard, rather than as an extra. Puddings were delicious! Service and staff were great, friendly, polite, efficient but also gave us space. Highly recommended. 😁😁
Food was great (French & North African influences) and we had a lovely chat with the chef/owner about the home grown produce. Service was sincere but slightly patchy.
Great food and service , will definitely repeat . Lovely time had despite the weather. They had made a great effort and gave great service despite the Covid restrictions
Under whelming service weak
Lavatory poorly maintained
We provide table service as a government requirement. We are a pub not a fine dining experience. Sorry if you’ve been misled by the other reviews.
Great service and incredible food. Loved the pods outdoors. Would highly recommend.
Frist time out after lockdown good outside seating and heating and covering for rain pretty good food limted range (understandable) a bit on the pricy side but over all good as we understand that they (with a lot of other pubs) are struggling after covid
The food was only fair - the chips were cold which was disappointing
Lovely welcome from Gary and his young team, very delicious food (fish of the day followed by Lemon Tart) and a quality rose wine. Excellent attentive service throughout. A very enjoyable evening, we were sitting in the covered terrace, heater nearby kept the cold at bay and Gary provided us with warm clean blankets which were welcome towards the end of the evening as dusk approached.
I love this pub as does my wife and my mother. We booked and visited on Friday 30th April 2021. We were all so happy to return. The staff were brilliant and our friend Gary, the landlord came to wish us well. What a fine man he is. The food was sublime. My Toulouse sausages were made by Gary and fantastic they were too. Can't get enough of the place. The outdoor seating was well arranged. Great pub, great food, great welcome.
Overall rather disappointing. Why operate a lunch and a dinner menu? Surely an all day option would work just as well.
Then from the lunchtime offer no beetroot, no smoked salmon and no mayonnaise available on a Friday lunchtime prior to a bank holiday weekend. Apparently it was beyond the skills of chef to make mayonnaise.
Service is friendly from a young team but lacks polish and attention to detail.
Good accessible wine list with many available by the glass.
I can assure you I know how to make several regional Mayo wise and condiments from scratch. I can also assure you that expecting someone to do so during a busy service when it’s not on the menu is an expectation a tad too high from a tiny pub kitchen & a little pompous under the current restrictions. Probably best you find somewhere else to practise your Jay Raynor impressions
Very impressed with how hot the food was served considering it was a chilly day and we were eating outside. Everything was cooked and served to perfection. My only criticism was the Liver Parfait in the way it was served looked shop bought rather than homemade (not sure it if is bought in or made on site - but it was still very tasty). They have a lovely choice of wines too. We say in one of the pods at the front of the pub - despite no heater we were cosy enough with cushions to sit on and a blanket provided for extra warmth. Some road noise sitting at the front but otherwise quite quiet and private. The seats at the back felt closer together and quite dark under the large blue coverings to keep the weather off - and despite heaters it felt more chilly there than at the front. My first time eating there but I will definitely go back.
Lovely meal, felt very well looked after. Excellent COVID safety measures in place.
So good to have the Maltsters back open for outdoor dining after lockdown 3. The covered pods in the front garden work well - my walking group occupied two of them on Wednesday lunchtime, on a cold, wet day: we needed the electric heater in the pods, plus the blankets for our ageing legs. Food and drink were well up to Maltsters high standard , and we appreciated the nice touch of the chef-owner escaping from his kitchen on occasions to check we were enjoying ourselves - and his food - which were.
Lovely to chat.
Loved it. First time visitors and met the owner and had an absolutely amazing lunch. Will definitely be back!! And bring our friends!!
Had a most delicious lunch and sat in a lovely ‘pod’ at the front of the pub. Would recommend this pub to anyone.
The food was excellent, the greeting friendly and everything was done to make the ambience attractive.
Thank you. Sorry as per our website, no refunds for Julia Robert’s moments. ;) Glad you enjoyed the rest of your meal.
Not everything on the menu (Sunday menu) was available, the waiting staff did not know what the dishes were, or what was, or wasn't available. What came out was not as described on the menu. Service was very slow. The food we did have was delicious.
Well I’m glad we got there in the end. It’s tough on our industry right now. Suppliers are having issues, we lost staff who didn’t return after furlough and everyone and their dog wanted to be here the first Sunday. This weekend was much better, thanks to your feed back. I’ve updated your notes with a free drink next time you are here.
Inconsistent roast meat portions (small!) and items missing from plates - (no rolls with soup starters which other tables received) - considering limited Sunday lunch menu and £££ prices... not ideal. Also when asked for extra gravy (as included on menu for £1) to add to the tablespoon portion on the plate - we were informed none was available. Which by 12:20pm on a Sunday lunch service is inexcusable! What we did get was great service from the young team - and what did arrive on our plate was tasty.
Spoke with your husband and have arranged a voucher for you. See you soon.
We got a warm welcome when we arrived for an early dinner on Saturday. The food was tasty, well presented and reasonable portions. Table staff were very busy but always helpful and knowledgable. Felt safe and tables were well spaced. Will definitely return as the weather warms up.
Lovely courtyard setting for outside dining. Food, drink and service were all very good.
Admittedly they were very busy and the staff were obviously very new e.g. our waiter had never heard of elderflower Presse But my rap was mediocre. We waited half an hour for deserts and then they admitted that they lost the order. The results were good but the overall experience was not
He knows exactly what elderflower presse is. We had ran out and he offered you elderflower tonic or cordial instead. I can’t do much about your rapping I’m afraid. But I hear MC Hammer gives lessons. ;) I’ve updated your notes with a free drink next time you come.
Lovely place and staff friendly if a little slow because it was fully booked.
Lovely birthday meal, great menu, liked trying something different; frogs legs. Freindly and helpful staff. Attractive area to sit (as have to be outside now) All great, come here quite often and will be back!
So nice to be back - excellent service, delicious food and all in a safe environment. Perfect.
This was the first weekend on being allowed out to eat. Understandably it was busy.
Kitchen seemed to be under-resourced as food took a *l o n g* time to arrive; parts were lukewarm.
Drinks had to be chased 3, 4, 5 times.
We just felt the staff hadn't yet got their act together.
we had one of the pods at the front of the Maltsers, had its own heater, great idea. The service was fantastic, the waiter was in his own but, you wouldn’t have known, The food was excellent and good portion sizes. we will definitely be back. 👍👍👏👏👏
We were in a tent. We were the only diners around, so it was very quiet. It was freezing cold in the tent, as the heating wasn't working. This meant we ate our main course and dessert quicker than we might normally! Main course (cous cous royale) was very tasty, the parfait dessert was good. I had two glasses of red wine, and the glass remained cold in my hand right through. Probably the most important part of the evening was the fact that they had big, grey, warm rugs that we could wrap round ourselves.
