Great food and service. Only 1 slight criticism the gravy is really thin apart from that everything was perfect. Would definitely book again.
Food was tasteless and cold.
We found all the staff very welcoming, friendly and helpful
Food was well cooked and nicely presented
An overall very good experience and will definitely visit again when visiting the area
Just a bit slow despite being less than 20% full
Very good/excellent quality food
Everyone we eat here we are dissatisfied. I feel it's time to stop going. Waitress was lovely but no adjustments could me made to the menu to cater for dietary requirements. There was only one vegetarian 'nibble' and at 6pm on a Friday they had run out. There were only 2 GF options. They would not mix the dishes to give more choice in options. The fish portions were children's size. For the price it was unacceptable.
Three courses - all delicious. Scallops and black pudding, turbot with Jerusalem artichoke and panna cotta with rhubarb and crumbly bits. Seriously good.
Excellent food and service,we had the Sunday roast 2 course which was very good.
Lovely Sunday lunch.
Slight confusion over ordering gin and tonics....was told by the waitress that they had every gin under the sky but then found no Hendricks left or tangeray...and that they could only offer their own distilled gin, which was very nice, but they really need to sort out what their gin offer is.!!
Lovely waitress with a great smile.
Bill a tad expensive but as I say great lunch so happy to pay the extra.
We went for New Year’s Eve, atmosphere was good, were told we couldn’t have our table 15 mins early to take a seat and chat and that the waiter would come and get us when they could ready. Gave up waiting 30’mins after booking no one came.
Food and wine was good. Duck skin could of been crispy over soggy
Rubbish wooden chair seating. Had to ask for a replacement as it was on its last legs.
Head waiter wasn’t dressed appropriately a casual grey scruffy combo, looked like he couldn’t be arsed and was more interested in giving free shots to the groups of girls!
We weren’t offered any extra drinks throughout the meal. Had we been offered desert wine, espresso martinis or champagne we may have stayed for midnight and spent more money.
Room for improvement
The bar man used his fingers to put lime in our coke. We walked to the loo and saw the chef eating roast meat off the plates about to be served.
Food good but all of us commented on small portions so therefore not value for money. No Sauvignon blanc!. Service good.
The portions of food were very small for the price we were charged and the food took a long time to arrive.
Excellent meal with very good service. The bar manager that took our order was excellent. Impressed with the whole booking process especially so close to Christmas.
Very helpful and attendant staff and excellent food
Had a beautiful Sunday roast sharing board, absolutely perfect!
The pub is really festive over the Christmas period and cozy. We had lovely time.
We had such. Great evening, it was noisy but to be fair it’s christmas party season! The food was absolutely incredible, so impressed and will definitely be coming back. The pigeon starter, tempura mackerel starter - incredible flavours and beautifully presented! Venison main and really posh fish and chips with a curry lentil dhal was gorgeous! We will be back!!
A very enjoyable Sunday Lunch with family. Our first visit. Would highly recommend.
But not the bedrooms at the front. There is a nightclub opposite that is very noisy as people stand outside
Good wine and great food. Outstanding evening very busy but not rushed or kept waiting brilliant
We visited on a Friday night - food was excellent service diligent and efficient - price higher than average but worth the extra
Fine dining in a pub atmosphere
Steve and Nicky
Poor and slow service,
Took at least 15 mins for latte to arrive, had to remind the waitress
The staff didn't know if there was a vegetarian or vegan menu. We asked a younger female member of the team and she wasn't sure so had to ask one of the other members of the team. Eventually, we had a member of the team explain what was appropriate for our dietary requirements. It was quiet and their was little ambience. The staff seemed to be pre-occupied with cleaning cutlery and setting places rather than attending to customers. We were keen to order more drinks but didn't in the end because we didn't catch a member of staff to ask.
Really good food, staff very attentive and accommodating.
Standard of food was fabulous and plenty of it. The only thing we didn’t like was the background music, Michael Jackson while having my Sunday dinner and a bit load was our only complaint.
Would definitely go back and will be recommending to our friends.
Always good Sunday roast and lovely atmosphere
Really enjoyed it, great place with simple but tasty well cooked food.
Fantastic ambiance but heating was blazing as was price. Food delicious but super pricy. Staff very lovely.
Would recommend for the roast dinner sharing board only although the roast potatoes were over cooked and dry. The cheeseboard was horrible. The food was delicious apart from the poor cheese selection. Service was non existent. Had to ask for wine menu. Didn't get asked if we wanted to order any wine. Got up myself and went to the bar. Wasn't asked if the food was good. When we paid we told them the cheese wasn't nice but there was no comment back. Very expensive. Not sure I'd eat there again. A shame because we drink there regularly.
The beef roast was very dry and "oddly" coloured. I spoke to the chef and was told that their method of cooking was a slow roast overnight. Not to my taste at all.
Had wanted to try The Newbury for a long time, but was a little underwhelmed. Lovely venue/layout etc, and warm welcome, but some dishes were overpriced for what you get. The garlic butter on my already expensive steak cost an extra £3 and the quality wasn't good. Then the cheese board was very stingy. I had 3 slithers and one of them was the wrong choice, which the waitress didn't want to admit or change without persuading. Shame really.
Lovely food and a great atmosphere, I would highly recommend the Newbury to anyone looking for somewhere to eat, especially a roast dinner.
Would like the option of one course
We had to keep asking for sauces, condiments, gravy and drinks. They should all come when the main course is served.
Sharpen up service!
My son and I had a good time at the Newbury. We arrived at 6PM and the place was almost empty, so we had great service. The variety of food was good, but I was quite disappointed in the steak; it was a bit fatty and it was supposed to be their best. Overall, I would go back and give it another try.
Staff were literally running around the dining room they were so stressed and short staffed , roast potatoes were dry, food was below average . Service was really poor
It was very busy and so noisy it was hard to talk on a table with the 4 of us. The service was poor to start with. We waited for over 20 mins for our drink order to be taken and that was only because I called them over. A large party came in after and got served before us which made me cross but the waitress was quite defensive and said somebody had called in sick. Once they calmed down it got better and they were a bit more pleasant. Food was nice although menu limited.
Overpriced small portions and limited lactose free option.
Things were going well until we realised the chef had left the turkey off the platter. When we asked for the Turkey the chef argued that he did put it in the platter. Then he had the audacity to suggest that we did not know the difference between Turkey and pork. I have been eating turkey and pork for longer than he’d been alive!
So this appalling lack of customer service spoilt our lunch experience.
The food was excellent but the service was awful. We had to go to the bar to buy drinks and order food as we were waiting so long to be served. When we did eventually get drinks and finished them, we were sat with empty glasses the whole time we were waiting for our food and during our meal. The food took about 45 minutes to arrive and we sat for ages waiting for our plates to be cleared. In the end, we just paid at the bar as there was no chance of getting service any time soon. Really great and tasty meal but let down by the service so much so that it would impact whether we'd return
The Newbury gets better and better. We tend to have dinner here pre-cinema, so our experiences are based on early evening. I imagine that it gets very busy later on and the noise levels from the bar area will rise!
Not sure if it's under new management or has a new chef, but the food was exceptional this time - interesting choices, well prepared and beautifully presented. The wine, beer and cocktails lists are extensive. Staff were professional and helpful. It can be a bit pricey depending on what you order (I had turbot for example), but there's a good choice to suit most tastes and budgets. They can provide allergen or dietary specific menus although we didn't need these.
Six of us reserved a table at 8.30 on a Saturday night and we were pleasantly surprised to find many people had the same idea. Service top class, plenty plenty of woman.
