I love the Northey! Work meetings, social drinks, impromptu catch ups.. The venue is lovely, there is always a warm welcome and the food is always great. A real bonus that the UK Government paid towards my lunch this week!

Nice surroundings. Good service. Steak was too raw to eat, only Luke warm as was the mushroom. But chips were hot. Offered a free desert but was declined. Drinks were therefore graven gratis, but did not makeup for an extremely disappointing and expensive meal.

The beef wellington special with truffle mash and greens was outstanding. Felt safe with the social distance measures in place. Lady was playing videos loud on her phone at the table to which the management quickly told her to stop which was great. Will be back

Absolutely fantastic food and friendly service from everyone. The new social distance rules were well respected by staff but without losing the personal touch.
We’ll definitely be going again and would highly recommend

My squid starter was delicious.

Sadly the triple cooked chips with my burger (& wifes steak) were bone dry & far too thick. Great that the Northey don’t just throw out oven chips but they were utterly awful

The waitress was excellent

The food was slow to arrive (45 mins) but the waiters were friendly.
Triple cooked chips were very dry.
Batter on fish was soggy.
There was only one veggie option for main and it was a small portion for a main course.
The cheeseboard stated it came with grapes but none were presented with the two we ordered.
I was disappointed after a much better experience last year.
My party of 5 all felt the food and fell short of the 5* rating.

Food was of good quality but too trendy. Who eats 'black cabbage'? Sounds awful, so we avoided the dish, which was otherwise tempting. Expensive for a pub lunch - £56 for 2 including modest drinks. However, the Northey is very clean and spacious - reassuring in these difficult times. Staff were very good and thoughtful

The Northey Arms
Responded on 24 July 2020

Hi Brian, Thank you for taking the time to leave a review. Black cabbage is simply a variety of cabbage with a darker green leaf, we've tried to keep our dishes classic and comforting with a few minor embelishments to keep things a bit interesting! We hope to welcome you back again soon.

Our lunch group of 6 people went to the Northey Arms as it was on a convenient bus route.
We had a warm welcome from the bar man and shown to our table.
There was a lengthy wait to be asked for our drinks order and when we had questions about the menu neither the bar man or waitress had answers, in fact when asked what the Stone Bass was he answered fish, which is what we knew already. The best value for money was the battered fish and chips and the soup was to be recommended, all other dishes were disappointing and expensive for what was served up.
Following the main course we had to wait ages for someone to ask if we wanted pudding or coffee, in fact we had to catch the eye of the waitress' eye for her to ask for our order. We then had to wait ages for them to arrive. It was a very disappointing lunch.
It was not very busy yet the staff could not cope with the customers that were in the pub.

Food was very bland!! Looked impressive but no seasoning... I had fish and chips for my main and the fish was so overcooked and the chips undercooked! My husband had the liver and it was tough and he seemed to think that it wasn’t very fresh! Such a shame as we used to go to this restaurant a few years ago and it was outstanding! I’m sorry to say we won’t be going back!!

I’ve worked at a 5 star property in the north where the emphasis was on making every guest feel welcome. From start to finish I felt as if we were not made to feel welcome and almost at times like we were an inconvenience to staff.

We dined here last when we were based at Corsham some 8 years ago. We chose to come back as we were visiting family and friends in the area and from the previous visit I remember the fish and chips being sublime. This time round it was okay but I guess a little underwhelming from my expectations.

Please try a little harder with staff. Ensure that they want to create a welcoming environment and when you do check backs on food, train staff to actually seem interested in how the meal is rather than checking back because they have to.

This is a stunning venue, a wonderful location and the food quality seems good. The staff don’t seem enthusiastic towards your product and are the make or break for the guest experience.

we walked in not knowing where to go etc, there was a Scottish guy behind the bar and he was so welcoming and helpful, even in the morning we saw him as we went down for breakfast and again was so helpful and he made our stay 100x better!! The only downside was when we came down for dinner, we booked a table and the Scottish guy said the waitress will show us to the table - when she came over she said infront of us to the gentleman ‘you could have showed them to their table’ in a very angry manner! Then she walked past our table plenty of times and we had to wait 25 mins to even order our drinks! We over heard her not being very welcoming to other tables. Even when she took our order she didnt even say a word or anything; it was clear she obviously didnt want to be working on a friday night but the table next to us said the same so we didnt feel like the only disappointed people. The room we had was perfect and we even had a large balcony which we werent expecting! I would 100% stay there again!

We were shown to our table and waitress was pleasant. However once we had ordered took forever for starter to arrive which when did arrive soup was luke warm and garlic bread still had un-melted butter. The garlic bread was a panni and I think the garlic had been forgotten! For £5.25 this is a rip off! Main course of fish and Chips was nice although not piping hot. Ordered drinks but had to remind waitress as waiting and waiting but nothing arrived. Overall a little disappointed as was looking forward to it

Sorry but I feel the prices outweigh the quality of food offered. We eat out at a lot of pubs and also fine dining restaurants, and The Northey in my opinion is offering average pub food at inflated prices.
Our evening was clouded by a rowdy party, but the staff in their defence, were very pleasant and apologetic. Our pulled pork burgers were only lukewarm but given the noisy distractions in the restaurant, we didn’t want to prolong our meal by sending food back.

Four of us dined on a Wednesday evening. The food was well-prepared and good to eat. The ambience of the restaurant was pleasant - it was fairly quiet there but the bar area was busy. Staffing was inadequate with only two people working in the public areas. They appeared to be under pressure. Although they did the right things in terms of the timing and efficiency of service they also lacked charm, friendliness and interest in us and our experience. Some restaurants always get this right. It was not right at the Northey, and this diminished our pleasure in eating there.

We had a wonderful meal on Valentine's day. The menu and food was excellent.
My only comment is that the bar was crowded when we arrived. Evidently "happy hour" every Friday and it is enthusiastically supported. Unfortunately two gentlemen were sat at the bar did suffer a lack of elegance and manners. Their language was atrocious which slightly marred an otherwise very pleasant evening.

We have eaten dinner here before and the meal was excellent. This time was for lunch and we were disappointed. The cassoulet accompanying the pork belly was not even lukewarm, our grandson’s chicken goujons were overcooked and tough as old boots and our daughter’s buttermilk chicken burger was lukewarm and thickest she had ever been served! She couldn’t bite into it and had to cut it into pieces.
