Great service of lovely food and drinks.
Also nice to have choice of a roast dinner midweek:)
I tried a veggie dish despite not being a vegetarian and it was very tasty and filling.
Would highly recommend.

We had a lovely meal the food was really nice but the service was incredibly disappointing for a five star restaurant .
We had to continually ask for drinks no one was particularly attentive and it took well over an hour for the main courses to arrive .only two of the party had starters so the rest were starving by the time they came and that was after chasing them up .
We had driven over half an hour to go there as we enjoyed a previous meal there a few years ago but the service would definitely put me off going again.

Visited twice now. Food was fantastic, service was great and overall perfect place to relax and have dinner. Only one downside was getting charged more on our bill. But we did get our money refunded but apart from that couldn’t fault.

Our food was good. But this was valentines day. I requested a lovely table. We were sat in the noisy bar. We had to queue at the bar to pay. We eat out a lot with friends and this is the second time table was poor. Shame when steaks were so good. Disappointed

The Northumberland Arms
Responded on 17 February 2020

Dear Guest Thanks for letting us know how much you enjoyed your steaks - really appreciated. As it was Valentines day, we were exceptionally busy and our tables are allocated as and when bookings are received. Sorry you were disappointed to be sat in our bar area which a lot of people enjoy. We value your custom and would ask that in future, you specifically request our Restaurant or River Room so we can seat you where you prefer to be. Vanessa C Guest Relations

Food is fairly good but service is terrible - it took over 20 mins to get the drinks we ordered. I could have got them from the bar myself in a couple of minutes so don't blame busy! Was an hour before any food arrived. To cap it all it took 3 attempts to get the bill correct ( I accept an element of responsibility for the 1st failed attempt as I didn't have my glasses) but the others were just plain wrong.
This is not the first time I have complained about service, particularly at weekends! Staff all look flustered and confused about what orders go to what table. Think more trained staff are needed at busy periods.

We took advantage of the 'two courses for £12' offer. We have visited The Northumberland Arms on many occasions and my choices were excellent - the goats cheese salad and fish and chips. However my husband said his were the worst he had experienced at the hotel. He chose the soup and liver. The soup was extremely thick and not very pleasant. He loves liver but on this occasion he was disappointed - by the quality of the liver and the fact that it contained a lot of sinews and was difficult to cut and chew! Not to be recommended I'm afraid.

We went to the Northumberland Arms for Sunday Lunch. We had made a reservation which was handy as the restaurant got busy fairly quickly.

Pros: The food was excellent. Meat and vegetables were cooked splendidly and we were very happy with our main courses (if hungry I recommend the 6hr slow roasted leg of lamb to share between 2). Our children's main courses were also lovely and they both are very well. The place is tastefully decorated and lit and apart from our table being a little small for our needs we enjoyed the atmosphere.

Cons: Although the children enjoyed their food they were disappointed twice beforehand. The online menu suggested that the children's menu included lamb roast which is what they both wanted but this was not available to them (minor gripe really as we were aware that this might not be the case). They also ordered veg sticks with hummus for starter but we were informed that there was no hummus available. They offered to substitute it with piccalilli (!!!) but with no alternative the children were given plain veg sticks for which we were then charged full price, which was a bit annoying.

The person who served us was pleasant but was not very proactive and not quite aware of info such as specials, guest ales, soup of the day etc. and everything was checked one thing at a time, prolonging the process.

None of this was a deal breaker of course and we would consider going back so hopefully this is seen as constructive rather than negative critique

A very good quality Sunday lunch at a reasonable price. The only negative was the restaurant's policy to allow dogs into the dining areas. I feel this is unhygienic and unacceptable. There were several dogs in the main dining area when we arrived and then, while we were eating, two women came in with three bull terriers who sniffed around our legs while the owners were talking to staff. Unfortunately, this may affect our decision to return to the restaurant.
This restaurant has several dining areas - surely one of these areas could be reserved for customers wishing to bring their dogs?

Turned up on time, table wasn’t ready but quickly set, ordered the food but an hour & a half later we had only had the starters & we were still waiting for our mains, I ended up having to chase the order up at the bar & the food arrived shortly after, worth the wait as the meals were delicious, very tender meats, tasted veg, the staff were apologetic for the delay & took the wine off the bill, which was very decent of them, I’ll be back & hopefully they get the staff issues sorted out & get on track to what should be a lovely experience, certainly based on the food at least.

This was our fourth visit on New Years day. For New Year the menu could only be described as a bar menu. Disappointing no roasts unless it came in a bun, not my taste. If I had wanted fish and chips I would have gone to a fish shop, mine was actually O.K. The fish pie my wife had was dried up, money refunded. £6 for a poor mousse dessert was extravagant. I do like the atmosphere and decor. But would only recommend for day time bar meal.

Have to say we were left bitterly disappointed on this occasion. We had booked the NYE Set Menu and paid an advanced deposit.

The evening started badly when we were taken to our table, and I was surprised to see menus as we had pre ordered, we did joke at least we were not sat at our least favourite table though. It soon became apparent we had been taken to the wrong table and lo and behold we were indeed on our least favourite table after all, the Northumberland Arms has always catered for groups more preferentially than couples hence we do now expect to get sat in the gaps that are left by the groups so not unexpected.

Our drinks order was taken ( note non alcoholic wine has not yet made it to this establishment so Becks blue it was). Our set menu did include a glass of “fizz” on arrival, this was never offered and I assume was forgotten about in the table mix up and because we were driving was not a huge issue, but not great service either.

The biggest issue we had on the evening was the time between courses, we have come expect 20 minutes to be expected by the guest and the host, but this year the wait times we found were extraordinarily long considering all courses were pre ordered. In the end we actually cancelled our attendance at our NYE party because we had been in the Northumberland arms for almost 3 1/2 hours we didn’t feeel like partying anymore. A few other minor niggles ( black pudding was missing from the main course but arrived shortly afterwards, the bread board is now very poor compared to what it used to be).

When we finally got up to leave and pay our bill it was presented without the deposit we had already paid being taken off, again a minor niggle but just one of many.

We really like the Northumberland Arms and will be back, but on this occasion the service massively let down what was quite a good meal.

We went for Christmas lunch, 3 adults and one baby. We were made to feel very welcome straight away, the staff were all friendly, helpful and efficient. The staff all had a good level of anticipation, all were professional. One even took on the role of Santa for the benefit of our child. The food was of a decent standard we have no complaints, we had a house red which was also very pleasant. The Christmas lunch menu included 6 courses if you included the prosecco and coffee. Between us we had one of each from the set menu. One of our party is a professional chef and he was pleased with the standard of cooking . We did not get a chance to visit the bar on this occasion, but we hope to visit gain soon.

Return visit and extremely disappointed service was abysmally slow despite unitially being only ones in and despite being 8 took over 1hr to get starters. Venuson terrine was mostly bacon and apricots. Prawn Cocktails disappointingly small compared to last years. Steaks were good however 2 ducks - chef clearly has no idea how to cook duck. 2 came undercooked, no fat rendered which were sent back and clearly placed under grill. No flavour and tough but having had to wait for replacements the offer of an alternative would have resulted in ridicolous wait. Puddings ok christmas brandy cream was split and not sure ever saw brandy. The ducks were removed from.bill. but unfortunately spoilt whole family evening. Wont be back far better restaurants locally, is a shame as family anniversary party booked for February which will be cancelled. Definately downhill fir Northumber land Arms.
