We ate in the bar. The service was sporadic but the food was excellent and very good value for money. The dog was welcomed and given a bowl of water. Warm comfy ambience on a cold day!
The food was poor. Two things unavailable from a newly written Sunday menu - chef had forgotten to make the bread sauce and plaice instead of cod. Fish not well cooked. Potatoes tasteless. Very empty dining room. Mistake on the bill.
No ambiance food overpriced and disappointing. Chips full of fat lack of vegetables too. We were not asked if we were happy with the food and not asked if we would like a sweet. No wine list offered either or after dinner coffee. We were there for a birthday celebration and very disappointed.
Delicious starters of trout terrine and a crayfish salad. Lovely waiting staff and we presume the owner- chatty and friendly. The Sunday lunch mains of roast lamb was also delicious, only let down by slightly over cooked lamb with a fatty edge.
Sunday lunch set menu for 2 courses was £25 each and we had a nice bottle of merlot for £22.
Good food, in an area with lots of competition.
Lovely Sunday lunch, fantastic service and very accommodating of our young children. Great atmosphere in a lovely location. Highly recommended.
Great food, attentive but not intrusive service
The setting was charming , the service friendly and unobtrusive and food delicious . Highly recommend.
What a wonderful place. We went to celebrate my boyfriends birthday and they made it very special with a wonderful table and a pudding to follow. Thank you very much
The food was expensive and sides cost extra but it was spectacularly tasty and I’d be happy to go again
The occasion was my partner’s birthday and the setting was ideal for a special lunch. The staff were very attentive and professional in there manor. They provided a decorated plate of piped chocolate in the design of a tree, very artistic, and meringues for my partner, which was very much appreciated, thank you.
A wonderful old hotel in the centre of Malmesbury. The atmosphere is relaxed and understated and the staff friendly and attentive. They could not have done more to make our visit welcome.
The food was a bit hit and miss. We have eaten there on a number of occasions and found the quality to be good. This was not true on this visit: whilst the dover sole and daube of beef were good, they did not necessarily have that bit extra to justify the price; and the parmesan and pumpkin creme brulee starter is definitely something to avoid.
The style and ambience did not disappoint - the food fell short this time.
Lovely afternoon tea, thoroughly enjoyed the sandwiches and scones!
The food was excellent. What a shame the same cannot be said for the service - it was absolutely appalling.
We use this venue to meet family and friends periodically and enjoy the place. The staff are helpful and very accommodating. My first beer looked and tasted like ditch water, but that this was quickly rectified. I suspect a near empty barrel had caused the initial problem.
Our meals on this occasion were perfect and nicely presented and we will certainly be using the place again soon.
We booked to eat outside but it was too chilly. Reseated inside with no fuss or problem. Good choice on menu. Food was great. Nice ambiance and staff all very polite and helpful.
Great fine dining experience. Beautiful setting and friendly staff, finished off with excellently presented and delicious meal and wine.
Lovely place to celebrate my parents 50th Wedding Anniversary. Welcoming and friendly staff, very good menu and food. Drinks reasonably priced and offer good pairing suggestions with each course and deals on cocktails early evening. We e been several times since our first visit on Christmas Eve last year and always been impressed. The daytime menu is completely different to the evening one, which is quite unusual for many places where there are often just a few changes, if any. Sides aren’t listed on the evening menu so ask if you fancy any.
As a reasonably regular dining customer I'm starting to find the menu repetitive with very small number of choices. I think only 5 starters and 6 mains. Once you have been two or three times none of the options excite the palate. A monthly? change of menu would maintain dining interest. Also pricing is on the high side especially the steak.
We booked on the day for an early Sunday dinner for four, one being vegetarian.
Service was attentive. Drink and food order was taken quickly and we only had a short wait before the food arrived.
Starters, main course and pudding were all of good quality.
So I would recommend the Old Bell on the basis of this experience.
Great place to eat and staff young and keen. Location in Malmesbury very atmospheric near Abbey and had an enjoyable lunch and dinner with good food and friendly staff / service. Would plan to visit this again if in the area as a go-to place.
Lovely relaxed atmosphere, food freshly prepared so lots of time for conversation. Waiter was great, very helpful and friendly
A perfect lunch with old friends. Great gluten free menu selection! Great service, delicious food and ambiance! Will definitely return soon.
Excellent venue for lunch with friends, only slight problem is parking.
I love the old bell, not the cheapest place to have a Sunday Lunch but certainly one of the best I have tried in Wiltshire! Food is exceptional, staff are friendly and the music isn’t bad either!
Great food but service is slow, thought we had been forgotten about after we were seated but 20 minutes later the waitress came with the menus, after that all service was slow but generally the staff are very attentive, the food is excellent, its well worth going and enjoying a meal out but service is slow so enjoy the wine and a chat while you wait
Menu a bit limited if you are a regular customer. Some staff are a bit inattentive but some are great.
Excellent food, some of the best we’ve had in England. The service was great and the staff was very personable. The building is beautiful also
Lovely hotel, nice restaurant, good food and service.
A disappointing experience. A shame as the place is beautiful. The staff need lessons on good service however.
Wasn’t the nice treat for my friend and I that I had wanted.
Pleasant surroundings. Good food. wine good but lager selection poor.
Very nice pub with excellent quality food at a descent price.
Would recommend if you are in the area
Overpriced, poor food and very slow service. Would not return.
Good choice if you’re staying in Malsmesbury ; not worth the detour otherwise
+ nice selection of pairing wines with each meal
+ fresh and quality ingredients are used
+ friendly service
- while the central piece of the meal was satisfying, the trimmings were somehow lacking taste/energy in comparison (cucumber vs salmon, potato vs lamb...)
First visit for us on Friday , lovely place very good food and service will definitely be back
Great service but disappointing with the food
Excellent set lunch which provides a good choice of high quality selections at a great price.
Food was very tasty and well presented. Although the veg could have been hotter the temperature of the plate made up for that!
Just a short note to say how much we enjoyed our visit to the Old Bell yesterday. The food was excellent, the Mothers Day gift, a lovely gesture and much appreciated, the ambiance comfortable and welcoming and most of all the members of staff who greeted us and served us were friendly, attentive and highly professional.
In other words, thank you for a lovely occasion.
Lovely old fashioned hotel with comfortable quiet lounges to relax and chat. Excellent set lunch menu; really great value for money. We all particularly enjoyed our various mains. The hake and risotto were especially good. One of our party went for the pheasant on the main menu and praised it to the skies. The only disappointment was the service. We had to ask for a drinks menu and it was only with prompting that we got them before finishing our mains - the wine waiter preferred to chat rather than serve. Food waitress was fine though and we were served swiftly. It was our second visit and we would certainly return to try other dishes.
Excellent food and a nice place to take visitors to Malmesbury to feel the history of the town. The staff were very friendly.
