Just a short walk from the River Cam, The Old Spring is a spacious and airy pub with comfy sofas, roaring fire and a large outdoor terrace area for the summer months.
All food is freshly made on site by a team of five chefs, utilising the best produce our local suppliers have to offer.
Incredibly popular with customers from near and far who love the pub for its consistency and quality, great beer and fantastic menu.
Saturday - Sunday: 12:00 - 21:30
We have eaten here many times. The vegan gnocchi dish had been removed from the menu. My partner and I are both vegan so we were upset, as we loved this dish, but were encouraged by the fact there were two other vegan friendly options. We chose the burger. We were both disappointed. It was bland and dry. The sides that would have made it more tasty- coleslaw and cheese- had obviously been omitted from the vegan version but there was nothing to replace it with, even though we were charged the same price. Avocado and/or vegan cheese or sliced tomatoes would have greatly improved the meal. It’s disappointing that at a time when other restaurants are offering a more varied vegan menu The Old Spring seems to be limiting theirs and failing to offer inspirational choices. We are unlikely to be back any time soon. I did tell our server we were disappointed but nothing was fine at the time.
We had a very simple lunch here. All had wild mushrooms & poached egg on Welsh rarebit, it was tasty but could have been hotter. For £9.50 it could have come with some side salad.
Very good - we only tried The Old Spring because of OpenTable - we wanted a late Sunday meal, and loved the choice of meals which suited children and adults alike. A chicken and ham pie, gammon, prawn curry and two burgers followed by desserts including waffles, ice cream, crème brulee and a chocolate torte all delivered.
A very pleasant place to eat and relax in, with a warm welcome and tasty food.
Nice atmosphere, popular, good beer, varied good value menu
Good varied menu. Food well presented and extremely tasty. Also a great selection of beers. This place has a nice atmosphere, and managed to be busy but still relaxed
Exceptionally good staff and a really nice menu. I would eat there again.
opentable says you can book till 2130 on sun, booked for 2100, turned up at 5 to, was told kitchen was about to close. Ordered pint and was then told kitchen was closed. Got no food.
Very pleasant local venue for getting together with friends. Consistent.
We had a lunch for my friend's birthday. The food was lovely and there was at least two items on the menu for my friend's who doesn't eat dairy; but not desserts, so would be good to think of a non-dairy dessert if possible. We were on a lunch-hour from work and we were served quickly, food came quickly and we were able to be back at work on the hour. The ambience of this pub has always been lovely. Evenings in winter when the fires are on are an absolute pleasure.
Not a very busy Saturday night. Your staff had all lost their smiles! They did not clear the table very promptly and most things seemed like an effort. Not what we usually expect !
Yorkshire pud was cold, remedied quickly after that lovely meal x
We had a lovely Sunday lunch with friends. Service was timely and friendly. Ambience casual and lively.
Only one slight quibble, and that was that , for 10 people, it is rather uncomfortable on a rectangular table - for those 2 people sitting at the ends of the table. The tables are just not wide enough for this, and the table we had had bars at the ends just where you wanted to put your feet. A. Better arrangement would have been to have added a small table to the end.
What a pleasant surprise, The Old Spring is a cut above the normal pub grub. Great pub, nice gastronomic food limited selection of beers a real find.
Sadly although we were booked for 2.00pm they had run out of roast dinners, which was what we went there for.
Good food and a lovely atmoshere and the staff were friendly as they always are. Thankyou
Lovely venue, welcoming staff, tasty food , would recommend
Believe all the bad reviews diners!
This place is good for beer and that's it no food....
The food quality was terrible , Vegetables were way overcooked, Meat Pie was overcooked, hot cheese was just that hot plain cheese, no seasoning.
No one came by to check on food during the entire meal and I even had to go up and find someone to pay.
I would have complained then but the girl at bar gave me the I really don't care look.
This was the worse meal I have had in weeks .
Always welcoming and lively without being too noisy. Good food and nice wines.
Fantastic burgers. Quick and helpful service. Great family meal.
We have been periodic diners (mostly Saturday and Sunday lunches) at the Old Spring for the last 7 years or so. There have been several apparent changes of management since then, but it has always been a reliable and consistent place to eat in terms of quality, value and service.
So this review is a bit surprising, because the current team are really friendly lovely people, and the value is still good, and the Greene King beers and guests better than ever!
But we arrived at 2.30pm on a Sunday to find the pub deserted, with only one other table occupied, and I was slightly worried about why.
Service was great, drinks were great, and deserts were really excellent.
The main courses, however - the roast beef and slow-roasted chicken - were not good, despite being quite expensive for pub lunches.
The beef was rare but so tough we had to get steak knives. The slow-roasted chicken was just not very nice tasting. And the accompanying Yorkshires, roast potatoes and vegetables just lacked any flavour too.
This is a shame, as the cooking and presentation was done well; perhaps the quality of the ingredients and the seasoning is lacking?
I would go again, but I'll not be trying the Sunday lunches for a while. For the sake of the very nice venue, and the excellent staff, I do hope that the food quality is not the reason why it wasn't its normal crowded self on our visit.
Good food but expensive, especially for lunch - even a wrap is £8. Food is always good but could not find anything for slimmers - wraps came with fries or incorporated mayonnaise, fishcakes were fried in oil. I have always found the Old Spring too noisy - either from large numbers of people or music from speakers. I tend to go only is someone invites me to meet there, as parking can also be difficult.
Food and service always very good & a decent selection of draught beers. Booking advisable on Thursday / Friday / Saturday evenings as it can get very busy
Always a great atmosphere with good service and tasty food. A little bit special.
Lovely folks, lamburger is excellent and the fresh "greens", meaning vegetables, are crisp and not over cooked. Very tasty French fries of the thin variety. Local hangout where we go a lot when we're in Cambridge because we stay nearby. Typical pub: you order at the bar and they bring dinner to you. Service is excellent and foot is hot. Four stars for a pub for eating, can't rate the beers or their cost because we don't drink. Around 30£ for dinner for two without alcoholic beverages.
We visited as a family to celebrate my birthday. Food was good with a reasonable choice. Could have done with a larger vegetarian menu.
My biggest concern was when I tried to open a tab, my bank card was to be held behind the bar. Though I am advised that this is standard practice, it's not something I felt comfortable with.
Superb, succulent, perfectly cooked swordfish steak.
Generally excellent and helpful staff. Much frequented by local residents. Ideal for families, friends or business colleagues.
It wasn't great, and the prices (£4 for a kids' ice-cream) were steep. We probably wouldn't return. The vegetarian selection is also not very good.
A birthday lunch for my daughter. Food very good, service good however orders are taken at the bar. Food service was prompt and choices were good. Would have appreciated more vegetarian options.
The best Sunday Roast I've had in Cambridge. Great food, service and atmosphere.
We eat at the Old Spring from time to time. The food is always cooked, presented and served to a good standard and it's a pleasant place to meet friends.
Excellent location for a family New Year's meal with young children. Helpful staff reserving a chair with arms for one of our party with mobility problems. Food reliable and ambience very comfortable and relaxed. Thank you.
Good atmosphere and friendly service. You can rely on the food being pretty good. Not haute cuisine but good pub food.
Good quality food as usual - had my old favourite, the Lamb Burger, and it didn't disappoint.
Ate with a friend on a cold November evening. Table was draughty by the door but the food and service were as ever excellent and a friend with a childcare crisis was able to bring her daughter in.
Always friendly service, food for whatever your need is.
Great venue and polite service, quick production of food, nice ambience,
really cool pub with great food and beer selections .service is good but you order at the bar. no big deal really. nice atmosphere qnd friendly staff
The experience was not worth complaining about but the food was disappointing (contrary to claims in "The Cambridge Guide"), overpriced for what it was and service was surly and inadequate. It was a better experience all round last August. Although convenient, we will not eat there again on a Cambridge visit.
