The Ox Barn
Really beautiful building (i had last seen it when it was a livery yard full of stables and horses!) and decor although not sure i liked the bar area quite so much. it felt a bit out of kilter from the rest of the interiors. The staff were really friendly and helpful! Delicious wine (house rose) and beautifully fresh and delicate crab. Chips (sorry to say we ordered some!) were not chips but a potato cut into quarters and deep fried. They were slightly raw on the inside and didn't quite hit the spot - we needed comforting food as there was a storm raging outside. Pudding of hazelnut cake was incredible and almost made up for the disappointing fries. light, nutty - delicious. We were sitting in the end corner of a very long velvet banquette which was lovely. very cosy. We had a quick look around the beautiful, newly opened interiors shop which stocked lots of things I would have very happily taken home if i didn't have a mortgage to pay. The parking was a nightmare outside. I am not sure where we would have gone if i hadn't managed to squeeze into a space. there were no signs to say where else we might park.Parking and chips aside, it was a very happy way to spend a few hours with girlfriends catching up over a glass of wine and a plate of delicious food.
We could not fault the Ox Barn. As a party of 7 we were there to celebrate my mother’s 80th birthday. So many other design led country establishments could learn a great deal from the warmth and exemplary standard of service provided by the Ox Barn. From the moment we arrived the staff were charming and accommodating; the surrounding were stunning, from the interiors through to the gardens; the food, delicious fresh and mouth wateringly seasonal.
Food was great! Very fresh
Food very variable. Steak excellent but roast pork fatty and cold. Service good and wine good but got the price this is not good value. The restaurant needs to improve consistency.
Always fantastic! Can't fault a thing. Lucky enough to sit outside on lovely new terrace
My daughter and I enjoyed several lovely meals at the Ox Barn during our recent stay. We had breakfast, dinner and cocktails there during our stay this past weekend. The food was wonderful and the service fantastic. Big thank you to Damien, Edwin and "the twins" for taking such terrific care of us at each meal.
Dirty seat, no attention to details, no bread and butter served. Dishes very oily and salty. Staff no caring...
I’d recommend the Ox Barn to a friend, but with an advisory warning about the price of the evening. The drinks, particularly the wine, are overpriced. The food is also slightly overpriced.
The most beautiful (memorable!) food in the most beautiful place. Will definitely be back.
Beautiful barn, perfect place to celebrate, I’d highly recommend it.
Having read about The Ox Barn in a Waitrose magazine, I thought it would be perfect for our upcoming trip to the Cotswolds with friends. We were not disappointed. We loved the courtyard entrance, casual but detailed styling and the sheep!
The food blends were interesting and much appreciated by the four of us. Great experience. We had a slight niggle about our initial server who seemed not as professional as the rest of the team - but once he’d gone off shift the rest certainly made up for it.
We would definitely return if we are in the area again!
We ended up being super late and stressed by the time we arrived to The Ox Barn, as a tire on our rental car blew on the side of the road. It took us 2.5 hours to finally show up and we could not have asked for a better way to wind down. Every single person we encountered on staff was a complete joy to talk to. Their knowledge of the food and drink was impeccable, and we wanted for nothing. Our starters, mains, and dessert were amazing. Both my gran and I wish we lived closer so we could make it a regular dining spot.
A great example of having too much money to waste without the expertise to wisely spend it. Thyme is completely missing the boat here. Great ambience with new renovation and Cotwolds decor but it cannot support the entire dining experience
Food was expensive and of good quality but not delicious or creative. Service was performed by twin 16 year old boys; they were charming but not well trained and naturally not sophisticated. Sommelier opened the wine bottle, poured once, remotely stored the bottle and never returned to our table. We had to ask for wine to be poured everytime.
No need to return to the Ox Barn at Thyme And definitely do not recommend that others waste their money
We absolutely loved our meal and enjoyed the freshness of all the ingredients - my starter was the best I’ve had in the Uk (crab salad with peas). A very special evening in a beautiful place. ❤️
My second visit and it was absolutely on a level with my first. Great service, terrific food and a fine wine list. Will be back.
We stayed at the thyme hotel and ate at ox barn the first night. The barn is stunning and well worth the visit. The food however was not meeting luxury hotel standard. It was rather boring and a little flavourless. We also had breakfast there which is even worse. Shame, as I would love to come and stay again but food was not good enough for what it cost.
Amazing food and staff were very attentive and welcoming.
The room, an old Ox Barn, is stunning: the widest barn I've ever seen with beams that stretch, amazingly, from side to side. There is a lounge corner to have a pre-meal drink in, complete with Thyme's signature sheep. Service by a predominantly young team is slick and friendly. We ordered lunch from the à la carte menu (no set lunch menu was offered, it was a Saturday) and portions were substantial. Starters were a cuttlefish with fennel and celery, and a porchetta tonnata (both terrific). Mains: slow-cooked lamb with peas and watercress, and halibut with artichokes and potatoes and a gremolata. We shared a rhubarb and ginger sorbet - a stunning combination. Two rhubarb cocktails (Rude Bobs) and a bottle of Saumur Champigny brought the bill, with service, to £195. Would definitely go again, though would be interested to try the set lunch (£22/27) for a slightly less wallet-damaging experience. But a very fine meal all round.
Food was good, well presented, but it is quite expensive to dine at The Ox Barn. 4 people ought to be able to dine for less than £100 per head.
The room is very big! Enormous in fact. Roughly 50% of the area is occupied by diners.
A beautiful place to spend our anniversary and the food was outstanding and cocktails delicious
Worthy of a visit however the menu is bizarre (Sunday brunch) and the pricing excessive.
The service and food, as to be expected, was exceptional. The ambience and atmosphere, choice of music and the beauty of the barn were all amazing. You’ve done a fantastic job in creating this beautiful place. Thank you.
Every aspect of our experience was wonderful. From the greeting at the reception desk to the final goodbyes, nothing was too much trouble. The food was incredible...the best beef brisket I have EVER tasted. Thank you for making our Easter Sunday very special.
We stopped at the ox barn for lunch on our way to the Cotswolds. We found the lunch menu choice a bit limited (dinner menu might be a bit more interesting). The food was nice and seasonal and the service was very attentive.
Over priced and very pretentious menu. The food descriptions sounded wonderful but in reality they did not deliver. Really....a plate of extremely tasteless radishes!!!! Service was good, decorations lovely.... very poor food.
The ambience is terrific. The interior design superb. Not too sure about the hairy throws on the central plastic looking chairs! Our green chairs were very comfortable, especially with the cushion we asked for. The food very good, especially the Monksbeard which we'd never had before, although the menu is quite limited. We were put off by being offered, via Open Table, only a 12pm or 2pm slot when there were loads of empty tables everywhere. We'd come again.
Yet another wonderful lunch at The Ox Barn. Delicious food and fantastic service.
Everything about Thyme Hotel is wonderful. Tasteful and stunning. Such a wonderful place to be and the Ox Barn itself has been developed with great care, attention to detail and looks great. However, as others have noted, to be given a brunch menu at 13.30 on a Sunday (e.g eggs on toast, albeit tasty) just does not work. It needs proper sunday lunch options, like a roast. The food itself was OK. Services was a little unsure and inattentive.
Thank you for taking the time to write your review. We hope our brunch menu offers something for everyone with 'eggs', 'small plates', 'large plates' & a dessert menu giving choice, whether guests come early for a plate of pancakes or later for three courses. We agree that a proper Sunday Lunch is wonderful & Thyme's village pub The Swan is renowned for the quality of their roasts. We do hope you will return to the Ox Barn and that you will give The Swan a try for Sunday lunch too.
A really excellent dining experience with a superbly flavoured meal and great relaxed & friendly service.
Thank you for your review, we are so very pleased you enjoyed dining at the Ox Barn and do hope you will come back to us soon.
Amazing place. We loved everything about it!
We are so pleased ... do return soon.
Exquisite food and service in the most beautiful setting. It’s definitely becoming one of our favourites!
Fabulous experience, food, ambience, service, all wonderful
Thank you JanV, we are so pleased that we ticked all those boxes for you! We look forward to you dining with us again soon.
The team were so attentive and food was outstanding. I had mentioned that it was our anniversary when I booked online and they made such an effort to help us celebrate, was so appreciated.
Thank you for taking the time to review your dining at Thyme, we do love a celebration in the Ox Barn and are so pleased that you shared such a special occasion with us. Do come back soon!
A fantastic dining experience, we had a party of 6 for a birthday Sunday lunch. The Service was impeccable we were made to feel very at home. They even put a candle in a piece of cake for us. Such a beautiful space in a lovely Cotswold setting. Can't wait to go back.
Thank you for such a kind review, we are so pleased you enjoyed your birthday celebrations with us. We look forward to welcoming you back to Thyme in the not so distant future for more fun!
Generally speaking our experience was, as on our two previous visits, excellent, but it was again marred by the glacially slow pace at which pre-dinner bar drinks arrive. It's very galling to be sitting in an almost empty restaurant, watching the staff (including those manning the bar) standing around chatting, and still have to wait twenty-five minutes for our drinks to arrive. Luckily, the food was excellent and restaurant service attentive, and so our overall impression was very good, but please, please OX BARN, get the bar staff to GET A MOVE ON.
Thank you Mark for taking the time to review your experience of the Ox Barn, we are so pleased that you love the food and restaurant service. We do apologise that the bar service was not as swift as it should have been. We enjoy your visits enormously and hope you will come back soon to let us put this right. We have emailed directly and look forward to hearing from you soon.
Fabulous, couldn't fault anything, from the service to the food
Thank you for your lovely review ... come back to us soon.
It was my husbands birthday weekend and I booked this for a Sunday lunch with relatives. There is no indication that Sunday lunch is available when I booked. On arrival we had a drink, still no one said they do not do lunch, we were given menus and when I pointed out that we were looking for lunch we were told you only do brunch. At which point we were told that was the only menu. When does anyone have yogurt at 2pm. There was, however, two specials which we all ordered.
The whole feel of the place is that you are just not ready for custom.
Thank you so very much for your review Christine, it has been a real pleasure talking to you since this was posted and explaining the new layout of the menu. We so very much enjoyed welcoming you back to the Ox Barn and that your subsequent dining experience was so positive, we look forward to you coming back to us again.
Unfortunately service was messy from the get go. Our starters arrived very quickly (before pre dinner drinks arrived). We both had pumpkin soup and it was lovely just a shame it arrived too soon. Main course was really poor and the venison was not rested and sinue had not been removed making it inedible. The waiters did try to make amends offering complimentary fizz and a palate cleanser however the whole experience was definitely off the mark.
Such a shame as the ambience and the venue itself was fabulous. There was also an unfortunate sewage smell which was rather off putting! A birthday treat it was not.
We were both really disappointed as it had come highly recommended by two different sets of friends.
We are so very pleased that you have returned to dine with us since writing this review. We very much enjoyed welcoming you back for a positive experience this time and hope that you will be dining with us again in the not too distant future.
The best food in the area, in a fabulous and unique barn.
Thank you so very much Mark, looking forward to seeing you again soon.
What a lovely setting for a late brunch after a hectic Christmas period. The food was beautifully cooked and presented with fabulous fresh ingredients. A great brunch menu with enough of an unusual twist to peak interest - we have the Goose Hash (so so tasty) and the Salt Cod Fishcakes (fresh fish and herbs combined to make a delightful dish).
The choice of English fizz and wine was impressive and I plunged for a glass of Devon fizz.
The bar looked really well stocked and I’d love to come and eat and stay overnight.
Thank you for such a wonderful review, we are so pleased that you enjoyed your brunch and look forward to welcoming you back soon.
