The Ox Barn
The nineteenth century former oxen house is the newest addition to the family of meticulously restored farm buildings. A state-of-the-art piece of agricultural architecture at its conception, Caryn Hibbert worked meticulously to preserve the soaring archways and original Cotswold stone rubble walls, to now house a modern, dining destination - including a contemporary bar and seven and a half metre Charvet open kitchen - to allow for an authentic, heritage-rich dining experience, enabled by today’s best culinary technologies.
wonderful space, great atmosphere and excellent food. friendly, unpretentious service.
I came here for dinner with my husband and it felt like a real treat. The staff are really friendly but not intrusive. The starters were fantastic and I could have eaten all of them. Our mains were slightly lacklustre, more gastropub than fine dining, but still enjoyable. Finally dessert was very nice, with good portions of cheese.
An incredible experience, we loved every moment of our Sunday lunch and we will definitely be back!
A great selection food and a wonderful atmosphere
Lovely food, service and ambience. Will definitely return!
Such a wonderfully beautiful place , perfect for a special occasion.
We had a very nice lunch at Ox Barn. The setting is beautiful, off a small road with no other buildings around. The space is beautiful with ceilings, wood beams and modern decor. The service was great from start to finish.
Overall the food was very good. The pear and blue cheese salad was delicious. The pork terrine and fig salad were also really nice. The potato pave was very good, but the radicchio was very oily and didn't taste very good. At the end of the meal, we ordered 2 coffees (flat whites). These didn't taste very good, and I sent mine (with oat milk) back.
I would definitely recommend this restaurant and would dine here again.
The food was delicious and the location is beautiful.
Beautiful dining space within beautiful estate surroundings.
Well spaced out tables taking into account current best practice.
Took my mum for a birthday lunch. Both had the anchovies to start along with the homemade bread and butter great for mopping up the oil from the anchovies. I had the bavette for main with a side of triple cooked chips, and my mum had the confit lamb. Then both indulged of the almond cake with caramelised apple for dessert. All the food was delicious, and represented great value for money.
I was driving, so no wine for me but my mum ordered a bottle of the Goisot Bourgogne Aligote which she rated highly enough to photo the label and research online. Also represented good value versus the retail price.
All of the staff were very welcoming and attentive, and added to the naturally relaxed ambience. We arrived early for our 12:30 reservation and were seated immediately. By the time we reached dessert and coffee, all tables were occupied, but there was no pressure at all to leave so the table could be turned over for another sitting.
Living nearby, will definitely be back, and perhaps next time by taxi so as I can enjoy a cocktail and explore the wine list.
Beautiful presented and delicious food! Great service and lovely surroundings. Overall very tasteful!!! Would recommend it to everyone!!!
Particularly enjoyed the small plate dishes. Not all waiting staff were wearing masks correctly! Directions from hotel entrance to Ox Barn by car need improving!
Really great experience and gorgeous restaurant / hotel. Enjoyed everything thank you.
Whilst the food is of good quality I think a great improvement would be to have some thought put into giving the dishes some balance.
A heavy and creamy chocolate ganache needs an acidic/citrus component to cut through it, not a dollop of cream on the side.
It would be hard to find a more bucolic setting for a restaurant. Welcome was friendly and attentive. Ambience is wonderful. A place you certainly want to spend time at and enjoy. The collective opinion of our party though was that the Menu just doesn't stack up. Confused and confusing. We also didn't really appreciate being advised how best to tackle it either. Our table included two vegetarians, and the only vegetarian option for a starter seemed to be the bread and butter, which was most odd. Yes there were salads, but this was disappointing in today's market. Food itself was above average, but not memorable and certainly didn't warrant the price... ok maybe the almond cake for dessert, but that was about it. Ox Barn as part of Thyme is a super concept, and delivers in other areas in spades, but is sadly let down by it's menu. We left feeling that it was a place to visit for a delicious cocktail and perhaps some of their bar food, but not for lunch or dinner, which is sad in such a gorgeous space and setting.
Thought the food was quite overpriced for what it was. My husband said the steak was chewy. My 11 and 13 year old couldn't find much to eat they loved. My tomato salad was way too salty!
A shame as the place is incredible and beautiful
The setting is stunning. The menu is slightly confusing (and if honest, pretentiously named) but the food was delicious. Service friendly and attentive. We lived the sheep seating around the fireplace!
Very restricted menu not available on line! Delicious lunch, in a very comfortable atmosphere and stunning setting. Friendly and personable service, a smidge hit and miss in attention but very forgivable.
Will certainly be back.
We went to the Ox Barn for an anniversary lunch and it did not disappoint. It’s a majestic space, made cosy with a roaring fire. The service is impeccable - attentive but laid back. And the food is absolutely perfect - simple dishes impeccably executed with just the right amount of inventive twist. I highly recommend taking stroll through their kitchen garden during your visit if you get the chance.
Lovely food great place the staff are attentive but not intrusive. We went with the small plates and this was a great way to enjoy the range of dish on the menu.
Always a wonderful experience. Service and quality of good excellent.
Welcoming staff. Beautiful location.
Lovely food although lunch menu for mains was limited.
An enjoyable experience and we will definitely go back
Lovely original dishes for lunch.. beautiful setting and impeccable service as usual. Just a little chilly... could do with a bit more heating.
We came to Southrop last autumn and stayed at Thyme with my family (including my 3 yr old grandson) so we couldn’t eat in the Ox Barn. It looked so beautiful that we said we’d definitely come back and eat there. We’d eaten at the pub, The Swan, which was really good so our expectations of the main restaurant were high. After we’d eaten, my husband and I both said we were very disappointed. The staff were good but the food wasn’t great and really expensive for what we had. Couldn’t really remember what we had, where I can still remember my meal at the pub. Promised so much in stunning surroundings but delivered so little.
Lovely polite staff and great food! Great main courses and smaller portions you can share.
The food was disappointing. The bavette was so tough. My fish was drenched in oil. (1 part fish to 3 parts oil). We invited friends to a Sunday lunch bc we heard so much about ox barn and we were embarrassed by their dishes. A plate of thin ham with 200 ml of mayonnaise. Incredibly disappointing. So much potential but won’t recommend or return. Oh and they forgot our drinks for 1/2 an hour. Sad.
We visited for lunch on my husbands 40th birthday. The venue is just beautiful, food was beyond delicious and the staff are super friendly and professional. A special thanks to Tim, who not only made us feel so very welcome and comfortable, he went out of his way to give us an extensive tour of the hotel and various rooms - which are all unique and perfectly designed. He completely sold it to us and we will be booking up to come and stay in the near future.
Great place to be. Lovely evening as usual. Thank you all.
Sorry, thought the food was bland and disappointing and rather over priced as a result. Service was good and friendly.
THIS WAS MY 48TH WEDDING ANNIVERSARY MEAL.MENU VERY LIMITED - NO VEGETABLES WITH THE LEMON SOLE,INEXPERIENCED SERVICE WITH WINE AND THE MEAL -EXPENSIVE FOR WHAT WE RECEIVED.WAITED TO BE SEATED SLOW SERVICE THEREAFTER
NO PROSECCO - OVERALL VERY DISAPPOINTING
DECOR GOOD - BUT NOT A GREAT EXPERIENCE.
WE EAT IN KENSINGTON,THE IVY AND MURANOS AND USED TO BETTER MORE PROFESSIONAL SERVICE AND MEALS
We were looking forward to our first time at The Ox Barn at Thyme with our good friends, but what a disappointment it was. From the moment we arrived for our table that was booked for 8.00pm, no one came to greet us and then when we finally found a young girl, who we assume was Front of House, who told us our table wouldn't be ready for ten minutes, so we were shown into the bar, where our friends were already waiting. We were there for over half an hour and as there was nobody behind the bar, we finally managed to flag down someone to order some drinks. These also took ages to come and when they finally arrived, I asked the waiter when our table would be ready, he said just a couple of minutes, but we were still waiting 20 minutes later. We were still there an hour after we arrived, so it was now 9.00pm ! We all decided to head back to the restaurant to find out if our table was ready. The FOH showed us to our table, which looked like it had been ready for a while, but no one had bothered to tell us and there was no apology for the delay either. I wish we had all walked out at this point. After ordering, starters came very quickly, which were fine, but had to wait a long time for main courses. The vegetarian option, which both myself and my friend ordered were really awful and tasted horrible, so we didn't eat much of these at all. We told the waiter and he did take the cost of these off the bill. My husband's lemon sole was ok, but was surprised it wasn't served with any vegetables. Deserts arrived and again not good. The almond tart was so hard, you couldn't cut into it with a spoon. Again, we told the waiter and they did arrive with different deserts, but we had all really lost our appetites by then. The restaurant was busy that evening, which I assume were people staying at Thyme. Also, the waiter that served us, was wearing a mask, but it was under his nose !! A totally disastrous evening and we certainly won't be returning.
A few issues which negatively impacted on our experience at the Ox Barn. Firstly we ordered two aperitifs and snacks, the snacks arrived a good 5/10 minutes before our drinks, I would always expect drinks to arrive before or at the same time as snacks. We then ordered starters and mains with a side salad. The starters arrived very quickly and they were delicious. While we were still eating starters a waitress arrived with the side salad for our mains, I said that it was supposed to come with our mains and she looked flustered and took it back. My boyfriend then mentioned that he had noticed a waiter heading towards us with our mains before the side salad arrived but they quickly turned around when they caught his eye and noticed we were still eating starters. When our starters were finished I ordered a glass of wine to have with my main. Within about a minute of the starters being cleared our mains arrived, which felt very rushed. I was then concerned that a. I could have done with a 5 or 10 minute break for starters to settle before tucking into mains, b. the food was not pipping hot or fresh, it had clearly been sat on the side while they waited for us to finish starters and be cleared and c. my wine which I wanted to enjoy with the meal was nowhere to be seen. I tried to catch a waiter/waitresses eye to explain this but to no avail, it took more than 15 minutes to get someone's attention (and then I had to call them over - there was no courtesy check on the food) , by this time we had got more than half way through the mains as we didn't want to leave them to get even colder nor kick up a huge fuss. When the waiter did come after noticing I was trying to call them over they denied that the mains had come early and said they were fresh from the pass - an obvious lie, they also admitted the wine was forgotten and rushed off to get it, bringing it and saying they wouldn't charge us for it. Bad service ruined lovely food in a beautiful setting - all rooky errors.
We all had an amazing evening. The food was delicious and the service fabulous.
Fab place, beautifully designed barn and lovely gardens. We had the lemon sole, stunning. Plus chips and a couple of salads. The languedoc rose was very good.
Beautiful setting and ambience.
However we thought it was overpriced, the drinks service poor and food and drinks menu very expensive. We found the noice level (i.e. music) loud and interfered with conversation.....
We were delighted with our first experience at the OxBarn
The waiting staff were very good and coolly dressed, loose fitting baggies and open necked shirts, just right for the setting
The food was perfectly cooked and presented and a wide choice for my wife who is a vegetarian
Definitely the place to go to for a special meal
The food we had was fantastic - Michelin-starred to be honest. Service was incredibly efficient and very friendly at the same time. We loved our evening at The Ox Barn and cant wait to return.
We had an amazing lunch at the OX Barn. The staff were friendly and helpful. The food was outstanding and even though more expensive than other places it was absolutely worth it. If you go out to a restaurant of that caliber you expect to pay a bit more for food of that standard. The setting is beautiful.
Perfect welcome with fantastic service. We sat outside which was lovely and the vibe was calm and pleasant. Plenty of space so social distancing generous. Food was amazing!
Beautiful calm surroundings , polite and attentive staff . Portions small but very tasty
A beautiful venue / setting but expected more for somewhere so lovely and pricing itself at a luxury standard.
Our table wasn’t ready on arrival, We waited 50minutes before we got our wine, then the bread and starters arrived at the same time. The wine was tasty (as it should be for £80 a bottle) the starters light and fresh, the mains were very average and needed a good deal of seasoning - the ingredients were clearly good quality.
The staff were all very pleasant and polite, but service extremely slow. They said (when I asked) that they were under staffed, so I sympathise for them. But we left feeling pretty gutted to have spent so much money on a ‘luxury’ night away with average food, slow service but tip top prices.
