The Ox Barn
It was my husbands birthday weekend and I booked this for a Sunday lunch with relatives. There is no indication that Sunday lunch is available when I booked. On arrival we had a drink, still no one said they do not do lunch, we were given menus and when I pointed out that we were looking for lunch we were told you only do brunch. At which point we were told that was the only menu. When does anyone have yogurt at 2pm. There was, however, two specials which we all ordered.
The whole feel of the place is that you are just not ready for custom.
Unfortunately service was messy from the get go. Our starters arrived very quickly (before pre dinner drinks arrived). We both had pumpkin soup and it was lovely just a shame it arrived too soon. Main course was really poor and the venison was not rested and sinue had not been removed making it inedible. The waiters did try to make amends offering complimentary fizz and a palate cleanser however the whole experience was definitely off the mark.
Such a shame as the ambience and the venue itself was fabulous. There was also an unfortunate sewage smell which was rather off putting! A birthday treat it was not.
We were both really disappointed as it had come highly recommended by two different sets of friends.
The best food in the area, in a fabulous and unique barn.
What a lovely setting for a late brunch after a hectic Christmas period. The food was beautifully cooked and presented with fabulous fresh ingredients. A great brunch menu with enough of an unusual twist to peak interest - we have the Goose Hash (so so tasty) and the Salt Cod Fishcakes (fresh fish and herbs combined to make a delightful dish).
The choice of English fizz and wine was impressive and I plunged for a glass of Devon fizz.
The bar looked really well stocked and I’d love to come and eat and stay overnight.
Fantastic dinner. Beautifully restored. We felt there needs to be less formality to encourage an easier atmosphere. Do very good food at the Baa. Wine list HUGELY inflated prices where the food is well priced. That would stop us coming regularly - which is what you need. Make it a place that locals want to come NOT just for special occasions. There are 160 households at Lakes By Yoo (where we came from), who would love the place, but it needs to be more “accessible” for everyday. There needs to be a reason to come just for a drink and then perhaps to stay for dinner. It needs to be a place to come for Sunday lunch with lots of young people - bring the dog etc. To keep it a rather formal, perfect place will not draw us in on more than a once in a while situation. Car Park a disgrace covered in mud and building rubbish picked up a screw in tyre £180 to replace yet on previous visit told to park there! Clare said it would be brought up @ managerial meeting!not much comp for expense incurred!
Our first brunch, after two sensational dinners in the past month. What a wonderful way to celebrate the season, oysters & wye valley sparkling wine, a goose hash that was inspired and a walnut ice-cream with meringue to finish ... and that was just one of us!!! Beautiful setting, attentive, professional staff. There is nowhere like it for miles around.
Took my girlfriend here for Christmas dinner and had a wonderful time. Incredible food and lovely, personal service from the management, bar staff and waiters. Would recommend to all and will definitely be coming back!
We had a superb meal. I booked this before it opened so hadn’t realised that they only served a brunch menu on Sunday and it was very quiet. The food was outstanding as was the service, but for a Sunday lunch should have booked the Swan and saved the Ox Barn for an evening meal.
There are many wonderful gastropubs in the Cotswolds (including The Swan, sister to Ox Barn), but Ox Barn is one of the first serious restaurants and certainly the best! The ingredients sourced locally and the quality of preparation would compete with any of the top restaurants in London. The old barn which houses the restaurants has ample space to feel light and open, yet is still cozy. The barn is an original period building yet is decorated with a contemporary twist, including a modern open kitchen where gusts can watch the chefs at work.
Just launched and has provided a super new fine dining experience to the area. Food is excellent using top quality ingredients, and the attention to detail for the whole experience is excellent.
We really loved the decor and the balance between rustic and modern style. Maybe a few too many sheep though. The semi-circular bar felt welcoming and was a great place to sit and people watch before the meal, while still enjoying the restaurant vibe thanks to the open plan layout. Didn’t get to sit by the fire after the meal but appreciate that it would be a great post-prandial spot to relax. The loo’s felt luxurious, and we loved the hand products they have stocked. We will definitely be back, but it will only be for birthdays or special celebrations as we found the wine list a little pricey.
Had a great evening, it’s a new restaurant so a few teething problems.
But a very promising venue I will definitely again.
First visit took barn - few small points :- more awareness of empty glasses. Nibbles with pre drinks . Bread on table not a paid option.
Overall very good, food was delicious maybe a slightly bigger menu .
Had a very nice dinner at the OxBarn. Service, Ambience and Food were first class. Only point of criticism are the steep drinks prices. Will definitely come back.
We had a lovely evening , the staff , decor,ambience,food were all great, our only concern was the choice of music and sound level which was quite high.

The restaurant and ambience was fantastic but unfortunately the food did not have the same effect
1 to have 5 starters and 4 of them salads wasn't great and the crab salad was bland and in need of some lemon to bring out the flavour
2 The main courses were nice but the sides to compliment them were poor ,to only have chips instead of chips as well as new potatoes, mash etch was poor I did not want chips with fresh fish or friends with pigs cheeks
3 We had cheese for dessert, I have been to many restaurants including several Michelin star restaurants and have never had decent cheese with 1 style of cracker which was particularly dry , no grapes ,no apple , no nuts ,no celery etch
4 in a nut shell fantastic place and staff but menus need looking at
The food was sensational and the meticulous detail that has gone into converting the wonderful barn has not gone unnoticed.
Cannot wait to return!
We were greeted with a warm welcome by Edwin (the maitre’d). The ‘Barn’ has been beautifully renovated which adds to the authenticity of the space and our overall dining experience.. The menu appealed to our party of 4 and all our meals were beautifully prepared and well presented . Our waiter was attentive without being intrusive and well versed on the ingredients used in each dish. The wine list is extensive and well balanced. We can’t wait to return in a couple of weeks.

We absolutely loved our Sunday brunch at Ox Barn for a group of five. We were warmly welcomed with a complimentary glass of wine and horderve to kick our Sunday brunch off to a great start. We then had a few sharing plates, followed by mains. Each dish was beautifully prepared and well cooked with tons of flavor. The ox cheek was a group favorite for sure. We also enjoyed the bloody marys (perfectly spicy) and a nice dessert that we shared. We couldn't have had a nicer afternoon and thank the team at Thyme and Ox Barn for a lovely meal and ambiance. We will definitely be recommending to others and coming back the next time we are out in the Cotswolds!
Beautiful, stylish barn. Lovely fresh seasonal ingredients. The cauliflower and fennel soup was particularly good. Very good service. Good wine list although a little on the pricy side. Would definitely visit again.
My partner and I came for Saturday lunch during the "soft opening".
A phone call prior to our arrival was much appreciated in relation to arrival directions.
The car park at present does not exist it is just a muddy area, although the path way to the entrance is paved.
Although a polite the young lady greeted us upon our arrival, she was not particularly forthcoming with any information even when questioned regarding the whole project and progress, which was such a shame. The Ox Barn is an amazing space and has been beautifully and creatively transformed, with the use of natural materials such as wood and marble. I can imagine in the summer the outside area will also be magnificent. We asked to sit at the bar where an informative barman offered us a variety of cocktails, which included a seasonal selection of home sourced ingredients.
Unfortunately it then went a little flat, as we had to eventually ask for a menu and then later again ask to move to our table. I sat on a bench seat which unfortunately was rather low in relation to the table. (This design feature is apparently already in the process of being rectified.)
That being said (and I am being picky as these things are all easily rectified and minor and the point of a soft opening).
The attention thereafter from the maitre'd and indeed all the staff was excellent and they were extremely attentive. The philosophy of farm to table where food is produced/sourced locally is excellent, it's fresh, well considered and delicious.
We will definitely return.
An amazing place and delighted to have it within a 20minute drive from our home. It was very difficult to fault despite the fact they have just opened and are still finding their feet. We will definitely be back very soon to see how this Cotswold Gem develops. Congratulations to everyone at Thyme, you really have created something very special!
