The Oyster & Fish House
The menus at the Fish House are built around the long-established, personal relationships that Mark Hix has with his suppliers and use only responsibly produced, carefully sourced and simply served British seasonal ingredients. The Fish House also serves by-catch fish and seafood, supporting local Lyme Bay Reserve fishermen.
The wine list reads as a charming tour of the local vineyards including Furleigh Estate, Lyme Bay and boutique vineyard, Castlewood. So, it’s not surprising to see Mark’s own label beers, made locally by Palmers alongside a seasonal cocktail list showcasing local spirits.

Loved it. Brilliant service, excellent honest and well delivered fresh fish and oysters. A proper treat xx
Perfectly located with amazing views. God atmosphere, excellent service. Food very good. All in all a great experience although thought the wines a little expensive
Definitely try the cockle popcorn! Goes well with a glass of fizz
Great food and friendly service. Gorgeous location
Perfect from beginning to end. The best fish cookery of all the Devon and Cornwall top restaurants we have visited this year. The shellfish soup was a good for my taste as I could have ever wanted. The mixed fish included the best bit Turbot I have had. My cherry pavlova was great but the Bakewell pudding even better. Views are fab.
The food tasted good. Unfortunately the heating was not on or working and we sat in our coats which was not acceptable, especially when spending 125 on a meal.
Excellent food - we had curry, prawn burger and spelt - and friendly service.
Wonderful experience, best ever way to spend Christmas Eve
Utterly Brilliant as always. The staff are incredible.
Great experience! Delicious food and friendly service.
The oysters were good. The side dishes were very poor. I ordered the creamy mash and was given new potatoes. The autumn vegetables did not have leeks in which we were told. They were just thrown into a bowl very poor indeed. We weren’t charged for them . All in all, we didn’t think it was up to much and we won’t recommend it.
Excellent fresh mackerel and great use of local ingredients
Another great experience at Hix. We were early hence ambience low(ish). Not their fault but honest assessment of an empty restaurant. Later , much better of course. Just love the place
Very helpful and knowledgeable waiter. Friendly staff. Excellent food and then met Mark hix which rounded off a perfect evening
Good food and beautiful views over the harbour and sea. Service was friendly and efficient.
The quality of the ingredients at this wonderful restaurant never fails to delight. From cockle popcorn and scallops to succulent steak and Morris’s Fisherman’s spelt, every dish is delicious. The staff are fantastic too- what a treat to be back at the Oyster and Fish House; a moment of joy during Covid times!
Superb food, great service, ambience and sea view.
A friendly welcome and a lovely birthday evening meal. Recommended.
Food was very good though limited menu. Appreciate that in winter the supply of fish can be limited but disappointed that there wasn't a simple grilled fish option.
Delicious food but the portions were quite small..
A lovely evening to celebrate our anniversay, we enjoyed the outstanding curry set menu, and the service was personal and very effective. Would highly recommend.
Absolutely delicious food, fantastic service, lovely touches. Would highly recommend. Made a birthday very special
Easy casual dining with no fuss and great food
Great service from a lovely waitress, fab food and perfect venue
Being a limited novice fish eater, I was disappointed that they did not have their fish and chips with minted peas, my fall back choice, (please have this has one of your choices). However, I enjoyed a tapas style meal with their scrummy non-fish starters which was very enjoyable, whilst my husband enjoyed the fish he so loves.
The COVID measures were evident with spaced tables, sanitisers on the tables ++. Atmosphere was quieter than in normal times, since only couples dining, rather than large table numbers - so a calm evening experience. Very nice evening - thankyou!
I thought food, staff and service was superb.
The surrounding and view just outstanding.
My only small complaint was steak was slightly over
seasoned but otherwise superb and will be there again.
Superb food. Plenty of choice. We missed out on the views as it was dark and raining but that would add to the ambience
Had a lovely meal in early December to celebrate my husband’s birthday. Beautifully cooked fish and delicious oysters. Service efficient and very friendly. Would return.
new manager( new zealand ? lady) very knowledgeable on wine and highly welcoming. food is generous and good, but not fancy. with this manager it could do really well..
The food was delicious and the setting very nice. Unfortunately, my mum's main course came really late, so that my husband and I had pretty much finished ours by the time hers arrived. But the dessert we'd ordered was given to us on the house to apologise, so that was appreciated. The chocolate truffles for my mum's big birthday was also a very nice touch (some restaurants only write 'Happy Birthday' on the dessert that you pay for!).
Food was lovely, staff were very friendly and knowledgeable of the menu but not in your face at all.
The pricing definitely means its a treat but it was very good.
Another brilliant meal at this wonderful restaurant that must enjoy one of the best views in England!
Attentive and helpful service; wonderful seafood; reasonable pricing. What more can a customer want?
A lovely meal with excellent and friendly service. All the seafood was fresh and delicious. Highly recommended
Perfectly easy to book, good directions and superb little restaurant. Amazing food and incredible service from a super waitress who answered our questions and explained our options for ordering. Had the best table in the house with a view that was just incredible. First time here and we will definitely come back when we can. We felt very spoilt on our anniversary but recommend at any time you definitely give this place a try! Absolutely recommend the sea bass to share! Thank you Mark, you have a super place and super staff :-)xx
We were so lucky to get a table at short notice and the last night before the lockdown too.
Really friendly welcome and taken to our table speedily.
Quite full but not too close for comfort. Very lively and friendly waiting staff. Despite the masks, manage to exude warmth and humour.
Food is everything it promises on the menu and great that it can all kick off with a fun cocktail. Starter of 3 fish, smoked salmon, crab and crispy fried anchovies went down nicely..
Our first choice of prawn burger proved to be unavailable but the salmon fish cake didn’t disappoint. Predictably, more than a fish cake but not fussy or overdressed.
We couldn’t pass up on dessert and my husband loved his treacle tart, again more than it’s simple name suggests and my credit crunch ice cream came with big chunks of cinder toffee and a small jug of velvety chocolate sauce. Divine.
We’ll be calling back when we’re next down from Yorkshire.
My wife and I had our last 'pre-Lockdown2' meal out here. Great view over the harbour lights. Excellent service. We shared the mixed grilled fish, and were not disappointed either by that or our desserts. Would go again if back in the area.
Beautiful setting, amazing food and excellent service.
Just the incredible quality we needed before another national lockdown. From the initial reception at the door to paying the bill, the service was fantastic.
The menu and quality of food were superb. I could have devoured a few more raw oysters but also glad I didn't, only as the rest of the meal was so filling.
A wonderful setting and exceptional quality, which is reflected in a higher than average bill, but every penny is earned and rightly so. We will most definitely return as soon as we are able.
As you would expect from such a seasoned chef, the menu was concise and inventive - a combination of established dishes but with twists and all based on wonderful fresh and local ingredients
The setting and views are sensational as well
A lovely evening, excellent but informal service. Wonderful food, truly exceptional. We will go back soon.
