Went for dinner with friends on Saturday night and it is absolutely superb, the best part of the evening was literally everything, from food to atmosphere. But I do have to give a special commendation to your FOH and BOH staff, what an absolutely amazing team you have! Will definitely be going back and bringing friends and family. Absolute perfection. I used to work in hospitality and am very critical when eating out, but The Palmerston is definitely special in terms of quality and consistency. Fantastic job ladies and gents, well done!
Great food, service and ambience
I arrived for dinner on Saturday evening and was shown to a table in the front bar where there were a group of men drinking beers at our table. They moved one table along but the table had been set with our cutlery and yet these other customers were allowed to sit at our table - not very hygienic. The table was covered in spilt beer and it was clear that someone had used my napkin to mop up some beer. The large group of people behind us was also drunk and swearing and I could barely squeeze into my seat as they were so spread out. We left within 5 minutes of arrival.
I get that you are running a gastro pub, but perhaps don't set tables and then let customers who are not eating sit at them. Also, at peak dining times, perhaps limit your drinking customers to areas not reserved for dining.
a good meal with excellent snack starters followed by lovely hake and venison - portion size for the meat a bit small but absolutely delcious. Yummy puddings followed so all in all a great evening despite the very noisy bar scene
The Palmerston offers great food and a good ambience. The food on the last few occasions has been consistently good. I have taken quite a few overseas visitors there for dinner recently and they all loved it.
This restaurant has always charged for bread, which I think should be free of charge, but at least you get really nice bread. However this weekend I was shocked that we were charged £1 each for tap water even if it was fizzy water.
Absolutely awful experience!
Luke warm wine.
Chips were under cooked!
A hair in my meal with barely an apology.. and had to ask for it to be taken off the bill when it came! Took 20 minutes to find someone to actually pay?!!
Do not go!
I have been to Palmerston many times and always had a good experience. This time however the food was very average. My guests complained that their steaks were very rubbery and flavorless. I hope this is just a bad day as otherwise the ambiance and service were very good.
We are lucky to have this pub as a local. Top notch food and an excellent wine list.
Fantastically good venison! My collegues rabbit equally good.We will be going again
Food took 45 mins despite being first seating at lunch and the roast potatoes were stale and chewy. Pigeon really hard to carve and had to ask for steal knife. Broken chair. stingy with the gravy. That said the staff were really nice and lovely pub and it is supposedly very good so may have been an off day.
Simply, truly, deeply excellent - a friend said this place is the best gastro food in our local area; and they were not wrong. Just lovely - really great food, lovely friendly staff - quite simply a joy.
Great food but service was a bit shaky. All in all a lovely Sunday lunch
Good value all round, room to sit and talk and ear
Really disappointed with the service, fantastic food and I appreciate the chef would have spent time to devise the menu but unfortunately the staff knew nothing, and on top of that no service with a smile. I’ve eaten here for lunch and it was lovely maybe just can’t handle a full house.
We had a fantastic lunch at the Palmerston, the food was delicious, the service was friendly and attentive and it was just the right mix of busy but not too noisy.
Absolutely wonderful menu, food & service at good price.
There was absolutely nothing to pass negative comments on. .. other than the family group who decided the lone 8yr old could sit on the end, scream her head off most of the time, and following what appears to be modern parenting guidelines, be totally ignored. If that wasn't bad enough the adults in the group just cranked up their volume to be louder than her. Alas no restaurant can control that sort of ignorance.
Would I go again ... definitely.
Great ambience, cosy setting and really good food. Bistro pub so had to wait a while at the bar to be seated for our reservation and the bar staff were serving the tables themselves. But the service overall was good considering.
A great menu and we weren’t disappointed with the food itself!
We would definitely come again!
Always a treat! The best gastro pub and Sunday lunch in London. Worth the drive to catch up with friends and family.
Met the family there for a Sunday lunch birthday meal. As I've eaten here several times and found The Palmerston listed as a good place for Sunday lunch, I thought it would be much better than it was. My acid test for Sunday dinner is always the 'roasties' and although they looked good, they really weren't very good. Tough rather than crisp on the outside and not very tasty either. The portions were not generous and there wasn't much gravy, but they did bring more when asked so no problem there. The wine was very good and reasonably priced and the service was also good. All in all though, I will look elsewhere for a good Sunday roast.
It occasionally goes through a bad patch - good to see it back on form. The difference is the service which this time was excellent.
Just simply the best gastro pub in East Dulwich :-)
Good casual atmosphere, delicious oysters. My roast came out slighlty cold, but the service and espresso martini made up for that. Will definitley go again and recommend also.
Consistently very good and nice to take our foodie friend to our local favourite. Loved the new steak night menu which is also great value. Always spoilt for choice with a great seasonal menu.
Good food but the service wasn’t great which was disappointing given that it is an expensive place for Sunday lunch. Staff were nice but seemed knackered and as a result not very attentive. We had to keep calling them over and they seemed reluctant to take drinks orders for the whole table. Also, being served by multiple staff was a bit confusing. Was also a bit disappointed that they wouldn’t serve the birthday boy a Yorkshire pud with his roast lamb!
I use The Palmerston when in Dulwich completely trusting the quality of the food on offer.
The ambience is cosy with enough space between the tables for privacy but never lacking in atmosphere.
Service always is a balance between attentive without being overbearing.
It's not cheap, but it's good value and ideal for a special occasion.
Went for Tuesday night steak night. Ordered fillets and ended up with rump ! Waitress failed to mention they were out of fillet on steak night - if you are going to have steak night at least have enough steak !!!
We had Sunday lunch for a birthday celebration,4 adults and 2 children. The menu had good mains choices but the advertised “ children eat free with adult mains” proved not to be available for our choices. Our server had to be persuaded that one main and 2 plates could be shared by the youngsters, ( but it wasn’t free!). The main courses were tasty and well presented. The deserts were much less interesting. Service was slow, there seemed to be insufficient staff for a busy time.
At £18, the same price as Hawksmoor, I expected great food. It was OK ish. The service was fine as was the beer and the wine burt c'mon
Had a Sunday roast.. was tasty but seriously lacking in veg. Basically some leeks hidden underneath the meat. Would expect more for £18.50.
The Sunday roasts were delicious, so were the wines. Desserts were ok. The only disappointment were the oysters we ordered as an indulgent starter, which came ready-dressed with a rather sweet sauce that overpowered any oyster taste. We'd have ordered them without dressing if we'd known -- since usually any dressing comes on the side.
After visiting in Feb 2018 ...fish dinners were fabulous and desserts were lovely . We booked for our wedding anniversary . Very disappointed . Ordered steak and was told it would be medium rare .. No choice given . I like steak medium rare but had to send it back to be cooked as was rare . No flavour ...no seasoning ...bland ..green salad was a hand full of lettuce . My husband had trout ...very bland ....only good thing I'd choice of wine ... Was so hot as no air conditioning working so left without dessert . So disappointed ...noticed other diners had sent food back . Will not be returning
Lovely meal , staff v friendly and service good . Nice atmosphere . Quiet evening so not v full tables quite close together so might be but noisy if were just two of you on a busy night .
A nice pub with good service. Mains felt a little overpriced - £18 for some small pieces of pork with no sides seems a bit steep. However kids eat free which makes it reasonable if going as a family.
Never disappointed whenever I visit. Excellent food at one of South London’s finest. Top service and a sunny table watching a bustling North Cross Road market.
Unimpressed. Would forgive the shonky service if the food had delivered but it was distinctly bland. The rabbit had zero flavour. Likewise the mozzarella balls. The lamb and pork we're okay but only okay. Wine was overpriced. The meal in general did not represent value for money. The place was empty too. Should have taken the hint. Oh well. Win some you lose some. Won't be going back any time soon.
Great food...we went for Hector’s 19th birthday lunch and I would recommend the Palmerston to casual diners or people who want something a little more formal
Food was delicious but the service was rather haphazard. It was a different waitress/waiter every time we asked for something, and when we arrived we were kept waiting while the girl had a drink and a chat with her colleague. She seemed away with the fairies.
Fantastic, attentive service in a very pretty pub. Brunch food was tasty too.
Recently the Palmerston has become a little hit and miss for the prices but Friday evening meal was great and back on form
Great meal - inventive and creative food. Perfect before or after a film at East Dulwich Picture House.
