I have been to Pickled Walnut a few times now and each time the food has been delicious, the service has been superb, and the decor is delightful. I highly recommend it!
Friendly, exceptional service, good food.
Definitely a favourite!
Firstly - if arriving by car, then leave PLENTY of time for parking as there is very little available!
We've eaten here before and have always enjoyed the food - although I think the starters are the highlight. There's a really good selection and they are incredibly tasty. I'd recommend (if you can talk the waiter into it) turning it into a tapas-style meal and ordering lots of starters to share and then heading straight to the puddings (which are also really nice).
The staff are all very friendly (although interestingly didn't once approach our table to ask if everything was okay), the décor/ambience is really nice, and the drinks selection very good (the men in our party particularly enjoyed the Beirut beer). They were only accepting cash on the night we visited due to their credit card machines not working.....but presumably that's fixed now!
If you fancy trying something different, I'd heartily recommend the Pickled Walnut (and try the pickled walnuts starter too....sooo tasty).
Excellent quality food, seemed authentic and was extremely tasty. The staff were friendly, knowledgeable and enthusiastic. Good to experience a new type of cuisine in funky and attractive surroundings
The food and service were great, my son had been previously and recommended it. There was a lot of choice on the menu and the waiter was really good at letting you know if you would like it or not (too spicy perhaps?).
The staff were friendly and the food was great with lots of flavour! The cocktails were very nice too although a little pricey. Would definitely go again!
Interesting and very well seasoned, spiced, marinated food. Will come back to try more.
So sorry not to be able to recommend this restaurant.
The food was not of a high standard except for the mixed grill which was flavoursome.
The vegetarian mousaka was a 2nd rate ratatouille and poorly flavoured.
The chili king prawns were tasteless - that's quite a feat to achieve. The lamb and ocre was cooked to a mush and lacked any kind of individual flavour whereas individually, both ingredients are potentially my favourite foods. A shame really.
The Spanish wine actually was good - quite drinkable.
Great restaurant, friendly service and fantastic food!
Brilliant flavours, good portions and great atmosphere! Will definitely be coming back again!
Again, a perfect experience: friendly switched-on staff who know their stuff, great atmosphere, and the food always fabulous. We had small dishes to share: lamp kebbeh and sausages, dips and crispy thin bread, and wonderful greenery, like spinach but MUCH more special. See you again soon, o Pickled Walnut people!
Lovely restaurant that had been recommended to us. Slightly more casual than we thought and had to ask for chairs with backs as seating was on stools or low benches. Food was good and a great range but could have been a little hotter.
Menu appeared authentic, with many dishes that were unrecognisable. Was worth the visit to a Syrian restaurant for the first time. The dishes themselves did not blow me over though. Service was decent enough, though considering it was not that busy, could have been more attentive.
We had really nice food that we haven't had before. We didn't really know what to expect but we really enjoyed the tagine and koftas
found this on Trip Advisor. Location is among many cheap student eating places up the Cowley Road. Good sounding vegetarian options, which is why we went, large portions, but poorly cooked. Prices very reasonable.
Another happy trip to the Pickled Walnut, which remains a favourite.
We almost faced a negative with a sudden announcement at only 2215 that service was over. This was overridden to allow us to have desserts, but the bar was apparently closed earlier than we would have expected or preferred.
Hopefully this was a one-off, because previously we have stayed on until well after 11... and might well have done on this occasion too.
Excellent service, a lovely Syrian meal (so hard to chose on the menu) and lovely atmosphere
Excellent food, good service. The only negative was the wine which was very poor quality for a house wine. Great dishes though and a good place for meeting friends and family
We really enjoyed our first visit here, stayed in Oxford for one night on the way to Portsmouth for the ferry to France. Neither my husband or I usually like aubergine but the aubergine dip was to die for! Everything was fresh and delicious. The pitta bread was the best we've had anywhere and would recommend this restaurant.
Really delicious food! I am dying to go again and try other things off the menu. Deep fried courgette with garlic dip was a highlight and lamb and butterbean stew. Would very much recommend
Great food served with a smile. The flavours were amazing and everything we tried was cooked to perfection. We will definitely be back.
We went to the Pickled Walnut on a Saturday evening, just me and my husband. We were quite disappointed. The service wasn't brilliant. I had to call someone over to take our order. I got the impression the kitchen staff and floor staff work very separately. The restaurant wasn't busy and yet it still took a while to be served.
We ordered starters and mains. Six tables were served before us and when our food did come out, we were served our mains and not our starters. The kitchen staff were apologetic and rectified the mix up and we were offered complimentary drinks.
The food was okay, perfectly acceptable but not wow in our opinion. I won't be rushing back anytime soon.
The staff are friendly and helpful. The interior decoration is bright and clean. However the food was not up to the standard you come to expect from middle eastern cuisine. Also, for what was served, it was over-priced.
We've been to the Pickled Walnut a few times. Every time I've noticed the service has been slightly slow, but the food is worth the wait. All I would actually ask to improve is the size of dishes. The grill dishes are hugely filling, but some of the other dishes are very expensive for their size!
I loved the very relaxed atmosphere in the restaurant. The menu offers a lot of vegetarian dishes. The service was very efficient and the food was great. Highly recommended
Good food, friendly staff. We will visit again. Thanks
Food was all good, well-presented, served promptly. Had about 15 dishes between 5 of us but didn't discover any amazing new Syrian delicacies as opposed to the more standard Lebanese. Atmosphere was fine but not hugely middle eastern. Bill was £100 with a couple of drinks each. Drinks weren't hugely dear but round the corner at the Temple Lounge you can take your own which makes it much cheaper, and the food is comparable . Atmosphere at Temple is sort of weird though (front room with people passing through to shisha courtyard) so Pickled Walnut is classier for a date.
Great value food. Fantastic choice. Friendly atmosphere.
Lovely place, tasty food, lot of veggie option and great service
Delicious food, innovative dishes, excellent service. Our new favourite restaurant!
Fourth visit and each time I think I've discovered my favourite dish, again. Food seems genuine, and is definitely fascinating and delicious. My only criticism is that they could improve the descriptions on the menu. The lamb and Aubergine Fatteh,(my latest favourite dish) for instance, is so very good, but the menu gives scant information about this unfamiliar dish. (kind of a stew, but topped with hot yoghurt and tahina sauce and toasted pinenuts).
Delicious meals. Friendly service. Our guests were veey impressed.Well done We will be dining at the Pckled Walnut soon again.
I came for my birthday last week with my family and really enjoyed the whole meal. Some really interesting dishes that I hadn't tried before as well as some favourites - hummus, lamb tagine, vine leaves.
Thanks for a great night - I will definitely be coming back!
Excellent authentic Syrian food, excellent service - the staff were so helpful and keen to help us choose the best dishes, and food was served impressively fast.
Good food and pleasant surroundings - will be great when full
The food and service were fine, fresh and tasty Middle East cuisine. Two of us stuck to the mezes, the third said his Moroccan lamb tagine with figs was delicious. Only gripe: a very irritating online booking process (OpenTable) which didn't enable change in number of guests and gave no support other than automated emails until a day AFTER the meal . I had to phone the restaurant, could have done so in the first place, they didn't know how to use the software either.
Heard so many good things about the restaurant but was left disappointed!
The majority of the seats are backless stools so it means you either have to put awkwardly hunched over or, if there are two of you, you have to sit next to each other on the sofa style chairs along the wall.
The decor is good and the starters were okay, nothing special. I ordered lamb skewers, the portion size was good but it was very over cooked and dry! The service wasn't great either, not very attentive or overly welcoming.
I wouldn't rush back.
Best Levantine-Mediterranean-Ottoman food in town, with the most friendly service, too - keep going!
Walked in randomly last week to just have a small bite on the way home. The starters were so outstanding that I called my husband to join me and we made it a proper dinner, though we never got to the main dishes: The starter portions were generous, each one more delicious than the other (of which we ordered several, as they all looked enticing), and each one had been individually prepared and the spices balanced with each other for each single dish - no one-for-all 'Mediterranean' taste here. I have since seen reviews on Tripadvisor who mentioned a 'long wait.' To those for whom the food took too long to arrive: Good, freshly prepared food does take some time. If you are hungry, start with a couple of starters, and you will be amply rewarded. These arrived swiftly, and were definitely all freshly prepared. I'll certainly return, and plan to take out friends the next time - I just hope we can get a table, as the restaurant is packed full every time I walk or drive by - justly so! Keep going, Pickled Walnut!
The syrian dips were quite nice, but the bread portion to go with it was rather measly. REst of the meal was so-so. Service was ok but we had empty plates which weren't cleared away stacking up on our table. Overall an average experience.
Nice decor (although way too many lights) and friendly service, but food nothing special and overpriced for what it was.
