The Puffing Billy Inn
We offer a dynamic, seasonal menu of locally sourced produce inside a cosy, recently revamped stylish interior. We change our menus regularly and have a daily changing specials board utilising local produce. On Sundays we offer a superb selection of roast dinners.
Lovely food and personal service.
We had the roast which was a generous size, wine was lovely too🍷. Dessert - the sticky toffee pudding was up there with the best we’ve had!
Would definitely recommend on a Sunday and would visit again to taste the rest of the menu which looked fantastic.
We had a very pleasant evening with good food, very good service & lively atmosphere.
A good menu choice and good value. Food cooked very well and service excellent.
All dishes were excellent hot value for money will book again when down in area
Food was amazing, got seated at our table within 5 mins of being there, waited 30 mins for our food, table never got cleared when we had finished, and ended up paying at the bar as no one came and gave us the bill.
The food and service was excellent, as far as we are concerned just keep up the good work.
Great food. Very friendly.
Gorgeous atmosphere, food amazing
Steak was melt in your mouth
We (and others) were asked for our drinks order far too quickly. We had barely sat down!
Food was truly outstanding, good choice on the menu, cooked to a high standard & well presented.
Top end of restaurant was quite quiet so lacked the charm of the lower end by the fire etc. Excellent experience & would recommend although if I am being picky the service could have been better. I am not keen on over attentive staff , however, no one came to ask if we required anything else such as another drink & we had to chase around to ask for the bill.
Will come again when we are next in the area.
Very Good worth the trip. Venison is good when on the menu.
It was unusual to find a modern restaurant out in the country, but it works for the Puffing Billy.
Local diners were present as were travellers. A very nice lunch experience. This whole area is spoilt for good eating places.
Very welcoming and helpful to my elderly mother.
Very clean and well laid out although quite quiet - probably as it was a min lunchtime.
Food was plentiful, well presented and tasty.
Good food served well. All staff friendly and helpful. Will be back soon.
Met some friends here for lunch and were impressed with food and service - will return
The Puffing Billy is consistently good, and has a relaxed atmosphere. I have been there many times, as it has a good range of food, and nice desserts. It is good for families or couples, and there is a small bar area where you can have a drink before a meal, or wait. There is parking, and the staff are friendly.
I enjoyed the evening st The Puffing Billy, the staff were excellent. The food was great quality and the service excellent. I would recommend The Puffing Billy to anyone who wanted a good meal out. Thank to all the staff there.
Lovely friendly Inn, great atmosphere and the food was excellent. Would thoroughly recommend and when we are next in the area we will be back.
Lovely staff, good food and great atmosphere. Perfect for families as there's a playground across the lane. Two of us were vegetarians and we both loved our options. Highly recommended and we'll be coming back. Bonus that it's so close to a train station.
We booked lunch for four people at 12.30 pm and initially everything was fantastic with prompt, friendly and helpful service. As the restaurant got busier there did not seem to be enough staff to cope with restaurant as well as the bar. We waited ages for our first course plates to be cleared away, then waited again to order deserts . There was another long wait for the deserts to arrive.
The food itself was nicely presented and very good value for money so we will try again another day but hopefully avoid a peak time.
Was dinner with one of our most loved customers so choose carefully from reviews for a quality experience. The problems we had were I think due to it being a quiet time of the year and a Wednesday night, lack of experience in the staff perhaps.
Wine quality and price good. Had to come back to check starter order, no problem with that but then to send 2 not 3 fishcake !
The mains arrived reasonably together all bar one which must have been missed as all others had about finished when it arrived (they didn't charge for that main). The rice under the fillet of fish was hardly warm indicating that although under a lamp when waiting the plate was initially cold. Personally the mussels were pretty small so the meat part equally so, but perhaps those in N.Wales where i eat more often are naturally bigger. The sauce for then was delicious.
Puddings we only had a couple so can not report too much, will say that had there been PURBECK ice cream on offer we would have been happier.
We had a couple of cheese boards- Cheese lovely variety and quality, best not to skimp on biscuits as its not to comfortable to have to ask.
Tips: Come to the table and ask if we like more wine, check all have a spoon for pudding, tap water on the table at the start is one thing less to be asked for.
Very nice place to be, staff were sociable, there were only two other tables so perhaps easier to be better when busy.
I can not recommend but will be back sometime I hope to see if its normally as goods as I expect it is.

We’ve been to the Puffin Billy a few times now just as passing trade and stopped for a drink. On these occasions looking across to the restaurant from the bar we’ve often commented about how nice it looks and that we should come for dinner.
So last Sunday we did, we booked a table for 2:30 and my wife checked the menu online and had already decided that she wanted the Nutroast.
On arrival the staff had trouble finding our booking but this was shortly resolved and we were taken to our table. On arrival at the unprepared table the staff member asked us to wait next to it while he hurriedly cleaned it. While he was cleaning the table we asked if we could just sit at the table for two that was already prepared next to the one that he was cleaning and laying. But unable to think outside of the box he replied that somebody else has booked that table so we have to wait.
We eventually sat down and looked at the menu, there was no Nut Roast, so we asked if despite it not being on the menu is it available, as it is on g the website. To our delight we were told that it was available and as such we ordered. Unfortunately, shortly afterwards we were told that actually it wasn’t and we had to settle for one of the other options. So we chose Indian spiced Cauliflower for an English Sunday Roast :(
The food arrived, as we were already annoyed at the service we didn’t particularly enjoy the meal but it was ok.
On finishing we considered the dessert but actually we just wanted to leave so we asked for the bill.
They couldn’t even get this right, the initial bill had three main meals on and one of them was the Nut Roast so we needed to complain again.
It’s just really disappointing, we decide to treat ourselves by going out for a meal and having a relaxing afternoon before parting company until the next time we see each other (we live in different countries) and the last memory we have is this.
Really impressive Sunday lunch. Delicious, huge portions and really good value for money. Lovely staff and really pleasant service 👍🏻
We think it is a lovely venue but the Sunday lunch was very poor.
Really good pub for a Sunday lunch. Busy and bustling atmosphere with plenty of laughter from family and friends throughout the pub enjoying well cooked food in pleasant surroundings. Quick and attentive service and a great pint of Timothy Taylor’s rounded off a really good meal.
We had a gorgeous meal served by warm and polite staff!
Thoroughly enjoyed it and will be definitely returning!
Unusual and delicious menu choices. Nice ambience.
Normally excellent. However, this time, 1 of the group ordered mussels. Sadly they were all gritty and small crabs were present. This was reported to the waitress, but there was no apology from the chef.
Hi, very nice restaurant, became quite full as it was Sunday but plenty of room, noisy small child at another table but okay. The food was very hot, tasty and lots of it, large amount of beef in the roast, we all enjoyed our meal & were very full but still had the dessert, chocolate brownies, VERY chocolaty 🍫 could do with extra vanilla ice cream to help it down!! We were all happy with our visit, couldn’t manage coffee after.
Great, will go again. Jill.
Beautiful pub, spacious but cosy with friendly staff and great food.
Not overly impressed to be honest. As a coeliac, I had emailed them prior to booking about my options but had no response. On the night I discovered that the gluten free options were not great and I didnt feel confident that they actually know what contains gluten and what doesn't (a pearl barley dish having been marked gluten free). No separate frier so no chips for me! No alternative offered except extra salad. Waitress was nice but very young so didnt take any of my comments on board I don't think. I'm not normally a complainer but I left feeling very disappointed.
Good location. Great food and range on the menu. Friendly staff.
Busy pub for sunday lunch
Service was inattentive at best
Food - very average sunday lunch, only one option (pork) available at 3.30pm. Pear crumble watery and inedible.
Pleasant staff, though on several occasions forgetful
Wouldn't rush back to be honest
Great service (very friendly). Excellent food. Menu was varied.
Above average pub with a lively ambience. The menu was interesting, not your standard pub food offer. Food was well presented, and delicious, and the service quick and friendly.
We had an excellent lunch at the Puffing Billy Inn. We would certainly go again and would have no hesitation recommending it to anybody. The food was good, service was good and the price was very reasonable. Altogether a most enjoyable experience.
Saff very friendly and good value for money.
Will come back in the future.
It was too full of noisy people on this lunchtime. Also the menu didn’t seem as good as on previous occasions.
I’m sorry to leave a review that is not so great, I normally wouldn’t, but I felt I had to share for the sake of the venue as well as future diners. The decor and ambiance is fantastic at the Puffing Billy and the staff could not have been nicer. However, I felt that they were a bit short-staffed on our visit as contact was at high speed, meals delivered on the run and it was difficult to track down anyone if you wanted something between courses. I would normally overlook that in a one-off visit but we thought that the food was distinctly average. The menu and pricing points towards a decent gastropub but the food was below what we expected. The burger I had was bland in a stale and tasteless bun, my son’s pasta tasted like dolmio to me and my husband’s seafood lasagne was really... meh. My chips were deep-fried oven chips whereas my sons burger (from the children’s menu) came with fantastic chunky chips that I would have much preferred. All in all a bit disappointing considering the price but a lovely location and great staff.
Unfortunately the pub was very busy and there wasn’t enough staff to cope so it took quite a bit of time for the service, taking orders clearing of tables. It wasn’t explained to us at the end that they hadn’t expected it to be so busy so we’re working on minimal staff.
