The Puffing Billy Inn
We offer a dynamic, seasonal menu of locally sourced produce inside a cosy, recently revamped stylish interior. We change our menus regularly and have a daily changing specials board utilising local produce. On Sundays we offer a superb selection of roast dinners.
Busy pub for sunday lunch
Service was inattentive at best
Food - very average sunday lunch, only one option (pork) available at 3.30pm. Pear crumble watery and inedible.
Pleasant staff, though on several occasions forgetful
Wouldn't rush back to be honest
Great service (very friendly). Excellent food. Menu was varied.
Above average pub with a lively ambience. The menu was interesting, not your standard pub food offer. Food was well presented, and delicious, and the service quick and friendly.
We had an excellent lunch at the Puffing Billy Inn. We would certainly go again and would have no hesitation recommending it to anybody. The food was good, service was good and the price was very reasonable. Altogether a most enjoyable experience.
Saff very friendly and good value for money.
Will come back in the future.
It was too full of noisy people on this lunchtime. Also the menu didn’t seem as good as on previous occasions.
I’m sorry to leave a review that is not so great, I normally wouldn’t, but I felt I had to share for the sake of the venue as well as future diners. The decor and ambiance is fantastic at the Puffing Billy and the staff could not have been nicer. However, I felt that they were a bit short-staffed on our visit as contact was at high speed, meals delivered on the run and it was difficult to track down anyone if you wanted something between courses. I would normally overlook that in a one-off visit but we thought that the food was distinctly average. The menu and pricing points towards a decent gastropub but the food was below what we expected. The burger I had was bland in a stale and tasteless bun, my son’s pasta tasted like dolmio to me and my husband’s seafood lasagne was really... meh. My chips were deep-fried oven chips whereas my sons burger (from the children’s menu) came with fantastic chunky chips that I would have much preferred. All in all a bit disappointing considering the price but a lovely location and great staff.
Unfortunately the pub was very busy and there wasn’t enough staff to cope so it took quite a bit of time for the service, taking orders clearing of tables. It wasn’t explained to us at the end that they hadn’t expected it to be so busy so we’re working on minimal staff.
Unfortunately on this occasion we received very poor customer service for which I placed a review on TripAdvisor on 30 Dec. The manager has been in contact since then and has provided a positive response. As such I suspect this is an isolated incident and I will plan to visit again.
I took my mum and wife for a Christmas Eve Lunch at the Puffin Billy this was our 3rd visit and again we could not fault the meal or the staff, all three of us had the turkey with all the trimmings finishing off with the strawberry cheese cake. I highly recommend the Puffin Billy and we will be back again in the near future for another meal.
It was friendly and we were made to feel welcome. The food was delicious and good value for money. We would definitely go there again. We were celebrating a 60th birthday and this was a good venue.
Delicious food, on a very busy evening. Thoroughly enjoyable. We will be ruturning.
Had the turkey dinner. Roast potatoes were a little bit on the hard side - slightly overdone. The veg side was good, but overall the food could have been hotter. It was quite a long time coming and maybe the plate was sitting on the side for a while. Companion was pleased with her vegetarian dish although it was over salted.
We went as a table of 4 on a busy pre Xmas Friday evening. There were 2 large tables being served and so we were very pleasantly surprised that we were served so efficiently and quickly. 2 course menu was good. Duck leg was lovely and lots of vegetables. Veg were slightly undercooked. Steak was great and perfectly cooked. Gluten free options were good. Waiting staff were very polite and helpful.
A very pleasant birthday meal with my wife and our friends.
I enjoyed my lunch here immensely. We both ordered the smaller plate sized turkey dinner dish and it was excellent. This was my 4th meal here this year. It was always very good!
Food slightly hit and miss. Steak and chips cooked nicely, Thai mussels v nice but could have done with some crusty bread. Veg with roast turkey inedible as still really hard, but roast itself v nice. Nice ambiance, but quiet on a Monday night.
Brill food.Nothing else needs to be said.Don't normally order steak as I'm always disappointed but a friend said how good they are cooked there and he was right.
The quality of the dishes varied hugely. Some were excellent, others were burnt. Service was friendly but distracted. This is not a cheap place to eat and touts itself as a destination venue for food; it will have to raise its game to merit such an accolade.
Excellent service and food .No negatives and will be back again for the next celebration.
I’d usually recommend the Puffing Billy but was highly disappointed the last time I went. The service was terrible - they forgot about the wine we ordered, missed our starters, and the food was expensive for the tiny portion we were given. We all had roasts and only tiny bowl of vegetables between 4 of us.
Disappointed and reluctant to return.
Yet again we were not disappointed with a good meal taken at the Puffing Billy. I personally appreciate the choice of smaller portions, as was brought up to clear my plate.
Friendly service with a good atmosphere but lacking in choices for vegans, only one option on the menu.
The Puffing Billy is my 'go to' place for lunch on special occasions. Always very enjoyable, with a varying menu of excellently presented dishes. The use of good local produce pays off in flavour. Worth making a reservation even for a winter weekday lunch if you want to be sure of a table.
All service was good but out main course was not very hot, in hindsight we should have returned it to get heated but we didn't
Smallest scallops I've ever seen.
And Exmouth mussels are far superior to Teignmouth.
We dined early so fairly quiet. Service was good and friendly.
We had scallops which were perfect. The sea bream with risotto was cooked perfectly as was the pork.
Pear crumble and chocolate brownie delicious.
Soft drinks and one large glass of Sauvignon- total bill for 4 was £160 / definitely recommend
We loved the food and relaxed atmosphere. Will be back again and again.
Amazing food, best roast around, staff are always really friendly and happy to help
Great food great service and lovely atmosphere we will be back soon. Thank you
It was bonfire night so busy and noisy but that was good, food is excellent and the camembert speicla was really good. belly pork was well cooked and the venison was excellent overall really good with great wine from Puglia.
Staff extremely helpful. Food wonderful. Great ambience suits all tastes - young or older, lone dining to parties, humans to dogs. The balance of everything couldn't be better.
Poor , slow service. Very expensive, portions could’ve been bigger, charged 50p for a Yorkshire pudding for a child, very tight fisted taking into account we spent £75!!!!
The food was excellent, lovely presentation and flavours were great. Nice and varied menu and good selection of gin! No complaints about waiting staff but they could have been a bit more warm and welcoming to add to the atmosphere.
Found the menu very limited without the usual blackboard specials. Very disappointed!
Unusually the service was lacking on this occasion and 2 of our 4 meals had to be returned to the chef as they were cold. This has not put us off going again although our friends will probably think twice before returning.
The food was very good quality, the menu gave a lot of choices, the service was very efficient the restaurant was very busy but we had no delays, it was a little noisy and was slightly expensive, I would recommend it to my friends for Sunday lunch.
As usual, dinner was very good.
The only negative was that the fishcakes, which I had for a main course, were mostly potato.
It was difficult to taste the fish.
The quantities were good on all things
The service was very slow and they seemed to lack the talent to monitor the situation.
One of our favourite family pub restaurants, we know the selection and quality of the food is always good.
