The Puffing Billy Inn
We offer a dynamic, seasonal menu of locally sourced produce inside a cosy, recently revamped stylish interior. We change our menus regularly and have a daily changing specials board utilising local produce. On Sundays we offer a superb selection of roast dinners.
A very pleasant birthday meal with my wife and our friends.
Food slightly hit and miss. Steak and chips cooked nicely, Thai mussels v nice but could have done with some crusty bread. Veg with roast turkey inedible as still really hard, but roast itself v nice. Nice ambiance, but quiet on a Monday night.
Brill food.Nothing else needs to be said.Don't normally order steak as I'm always disappointed but a friend said how good they are cooked there and he was right.
The quality of the dishes varied hugely. Some were excellent, others were burnt. Service was friendly but distracted. This is not a cheap place to eat and touts itself as a destination venue for food; it will have to raise its game to merit such an accolade.
Excellent service and food .No negatives and will be back again for the next celebration.
I’d usually recommend the Puffing Billy but was highly disappointed the last time I went. The service was terrible - they forgot about the wine we ordered, missed our starters, and the food was expensive for the tiny portion we were given. We all had roasts and only tiny bowl of vegetables between 4 of us.
Disappointed and reluctant to return.
Yet again we were not disappointed with a good meal taken at the Puffing Billy. I personally appreciate the choice of smaller portions, as was brought up to clear my plate.
Friendly service with a good atmosphere but lacking in choices for vegans, only one option on the menu.
The Puffing Billy is my 'go to' place for lunch on special occasions. Always very enjoyable, with a varying menu of excellently presented dishes. The use of good local produce pays off in flavour. Worth making a reservation even for a winter weekday lunch if you want to be sure of a table.
All service was good but out main course was not very hot, in hindsight we should have returned it to get heated but we didn't
Smallest scallops I've ever seen.
And Exmouth mussels are far superior to Teignmouth.
We dined early so fairly quiet. Service was good and friendly.
We had scallops which were perfect. The sea bream with risotto was cooked perfectly as was the pork.
Pear crumble and chocolate brownie delicious.
Soft drinks and one large glass of Sauvignon- total bill for 4 was £160 / definitely recommend
We loved the food and relaxed atmosphere. Will be back again and again.
Amazing food, best roast around, staff are always really friendly and happy to help
Great food great service and lovely atmosphere we will be back soon. Thank you
It was bonfire night so busy and noisy but that was good, food is excellent and the camembert speicla was really good. belly pork was well cooked and the venison was excellent overall really good with great wine from Puglia.
Staff extremely helpful. Food wonderful. Great ambience suits all tastes - young or older, lone dining to parties, humans to dogs. The balance of everything couldn't be better.
Poor , slow service. Very expensive, portions could’ve been bigger, charged 50p for a Yorkshire pudding for a child, very tight fisted taking into account we spent £75!!!!
The food was excellent, lovely presentation and flavours were great. Nice and varied menu and good selection of gin! No complaints about waiting staff but they could have been a bit more warm and welcoming to add to the atmosphere.
Found the menu very limited without the usual blackboard specials. Very disappointed!
Unusually the service was lacking on this occasion and 2 of our 4 meals had to be returned to the chef as they were cold. This has not put us off going again although our friends will probably think twice before returning.
The food was very good quality, the menu gave a lot of choices, the service was very efficient the restaurant was very busy but we had no delays, it was a little noisy and was slightly expensive, I would recommend it to my friends for Sunday lunch.
As usual, dinner was very good.
The only negative was that the fishcakes, which I had for a main course, were mostly potato.
It was difficult to taste the fish.
The quantities were good on all things
The service was very slow and they seemed to lack the talent to monitor the situation.
One of our favourite family pub restaurants, we know the selection and quality of the food is always good.
They couldn't do enough for us. Excellent everything. A special 70th birthday gathering and they produced the prettiest birthday plate of delicious little cakes. Thank you Puffing Billy.
We've been to the Puffing Billy for meals several times and have always enjoyed the atmosphere, friendly staff and service as well, on the whole, the food. This visit though some of us had poor quality food with roast potatoes being solid - to the extent one of us tried to stick a fork in one potato and it shot across the table reminiscent of a scene in Pretty Woman. I hope it was a one off as we enjoy meeting there with friends.
We booked for a family get together so we enjoyed the company. The one complaint and it’s quite a serous one for my husband and granddaughter. The ham was very tough and they were disappointed. The other meals were very enjoyable. I wish they had spoken up at the time as I’m sure you would have changed their meal.
Service was abysmal, I had to leave the table to ask them to Lear our starter dishes. The waitress made no eye contact with our table of 7 . The beefburger turned up burnt, even the waitress commented on it and had to be replaced. We were given the sweet menu but no-one came to take our order and we had to approach them! Then to top it up we were overcharged. Shame, as it was my “special” birthday and I took our family out to celebrate. We deserve some form of compensation and, no, to be clear we will not go back or recommend.
Simply fabulous all round
Welcoming friendly staff, shown to our table and drinks delivered promptly. Very nice wine list. The two starters were extremely nice (a Parfait and a Beetroot salad with cheese and nuts). The problem was with the main courses. Turbot on pasta with a seafood sauce (a daily special) - while the fish was nicely cooked the sauce was extremely disappointing and lacked any flavour. My husband opted for the seafood sharing platter as a main course - also lacking in flavour, in particular the salmon mousse/pate and the crab, each component was too cold which does not help with flavour.
The staff and manager were extremely apologetic and removed/discounted items from the bill. He also indicated that there had been complaints about the seafood platter at lunchtime so after our comment, he had taken it off the menu.
So while disappointing, they responded positively to comments and would certainly give it another go.
I usually don't have Sunday Roasts when I eat out, and The Puffing Billy reminded me why. Roast potatoes that had been kept warm for too long so were tough and dried out, and it came ready drowned in Gravy. Service was slow - it took nearly an hour to take our order and bring our food (only 2 of us and both eating roasts, so not cooked to order). For this reason we didn't have a dessert. I would go back again as the other food coming out of the kitchen looked delicious but I would not have a roast again.
Lovely staff and ambiance. However the food was a little disappointing. Fish cakes had large lumps of uncooked potato in. Beetroot salad was mediocre. The wrap and chips were delicious! The pork bap was disappointing.... would be nice if it was pulled pork.
On the whole we probably wouldn’t eat here again but would definitely come for a glass of wine and enjoy the lovely atmosphere. We had heard from a few other people that the food had gone down hill. Perhaps not enough help in the kitchen to deal with all the covers?
Very good food and pleasant environment only let down by very slow service. Our starters didn't arrive for 30 minutes and the mains another 20 minutes after the starters had been cleared. The place wasn't full and the staff were spending a lot of time at the kitchen hatch waiting for dishes to arrive
Great pub, lovely character, had a great evening.
Would definitely go back
A lovely place either to meet friends for a drink or to eat. Meals are very nice but suitably priced. Staff are lovely. I come here a lot and will continue to do so.
Delighted with overall standard and service, in a lovely setting
The Puffing Billy is the most beautiful and cosy pub. The staff are attentive and the food came out extremely quickly. The Sunday Roast was one of the best we’ve ever had! We will be back to try most items on the menu and another Sunday Roast.
At times waiting staff could be a little over attentive. Wine glasses removed before being able to order wine with our meal and then had to ask for the the glasses to be brought back after wine had been ordered as they had not noticed we did have glasses. Spoon not delivered with dessert. The bread rolls would have been better if they had been warmed up as they seemed a little stale.
Love the selection but of gins. Choice of food was amazing. Portion sizes excellent and served in a timely manor. Great seating area and fabulous location to the station that meant no one had to drive. Would definitely go again. I personally ordered the steak, I love it to be Bleu however this is rarely achieved anywhere as in this occasion but equally delicious.
First visit and it didn't disappoint. The food was lovely, portions are generous, staff are very friendly and there is a lovely atmosphere in there. Menu is higher priced than our usual restaurants but with the bonus of Military discount means we can visit more often. Already planning our next visit and have recommended to others.
