The Puffing Billy Inn
We offer a dynamic, seasonal menu of locally sourced produce inside a cosy, recently revamped stylish interior. We change our menus regularly and have a daily changing specials board utilising local produce. On Sundays we offer a superb selection of roast dinners.
Just wanted to say a huge thank you for our amazing Sunday roast today! Everyone was so friendly, lovely and accommodating and so attentive and the food was absolutely sublime! It’s our first visit and I can’t believe I haven’t been before -will definitely be back soon!
Two vegetarians in party and elderly mother, who prefers small portions, all catered for, with vegetarian dishes being imaginative rather than something from the freezer. All food choices were excellent and cannot recommend the catering highly enough. We had two small dogs with us who were made welcome too.
We had a lovely late afternoon lunch and Staff were very helpful and friendly. Unfortunately we waited a long time for our main course as the Kitchen / Waitress had mislaid our order. Food was nice when it arrived
Food and service excellent the only complaint we have is that it was fairly cold and draughty.
It is decent pub grub, nothing more and nothing less. If you want a decent value, decent meal this fits the bill. The choice is a bit traditional (safe) but the food came well prepared with for example, crisp vegetables, not something that had sat in a Bain Marie for a couple of hours.
Service was friendly and efficient and the choice of wine was, like the food, safe.
We had invited friends for a special occasion and felt disappointed and embarrassed by the experience.
We had the impression that there were too few staff and that they were new to the restaurant, so though they were polite and willing, the service was painfully slow at every stage of the meal.
Lovely pub, friendly waitresses and good food. Only criticism, it was a little on the cool side. However we did eat quite early and the log fire was lit as we were leaving
Unfortunately my husband’s steak was very tough and sinewy- but he didn’t want to complain! Our other meals were very good though. Also the restaurant wasn’t warm enough- could have done with the wood burner being lit
Delicious food, big portions, great prices, great service and friendly staff.
Would go back, lovely to sit outside in the sun! We were visiting from London and so happy to find a nice pub.
The rose was yummy too! didn't have room for desert but will definitely go back on our next visit.
We love the Puffing Billy and everything about it. It is close to home so go whenever we can. Position is good too being near the estuary footpath. One thing we did miss on this last visit was there was no smoked salmon on our shared platter, which we had so enjoyed on a previous visit.
Excellent quality food and good value.
Service was friendly but unobtrusive. An all round pleasant experience.
Consistent and exemplary in the complete eating and service, atmosphere experience.
Very good thanks, good food and great service would come back again
Slick and friendly experience from booking through to paying
Fantastic as usual credit to the chief. We always recommend
Excellent food, a little slow but it was worth the wait.
Staff friendly and helpful. Ambience relaxed, good energy level, contemporary feel. Felt my sons, late teenagers-early 20s would have been as happy here as my mother.
I had whitebait to start which was exceptional. Followed by beetroot risotto with walnuts and pickled cauliflower. Not sure the walnuts and cauliflower added anything to the dish. The walnuts were whole and looked like they’d just been taken from a bag...possibly could have been toasted/seasoned or something??
Lovely wine selection by the glass. Overall really enjoyed it.
First visit for many years and very impressed with food and standard of service. Quite good value for money.
Excellent venue with brilliant food and great service. Felt very welcome with homemade birthday cake brought out by staff as surprise for my husband.
Lovely pub in pretty village setting for Sunday lunch with good choice both traditional roasts and other options. Quite expensive and although the food was very nice it was served up not quite as hot as I would have liked (both main course and dessert). We enjoyed the walk from Topsham and took the train back from the station at Exton. A really enjoyable day out.
Had a lovely lunch for my mums birthday / highly recommend
Really lovely meal with family. Well looked after and excellent food.
This is the second time we have visited this establishment and on both occasions the food and service have been excellent. It is easy to get to, has ample parking and a cosy, friendly ambience. I would thoroughly recommend it.
We had to reduce the number that morning without any problem - service was very good and meal was presented well, good portion size and very tasty. Puds were gorgeous and quite a big portion compared to others restaurants. Will return definitely.
Really enjoyed our lunch, hadn't visited for a long time, favourably impress
The Sunday lunch at the Puffing Billy is one of the best locally. The roast beef is extremely tasty and the portion is generous, the vegetables are fresh and well cooked and the service is swift and friendly.
We had gone for a celebration lunch at the beginning of January 1.1.19 and quite honestly had an awful experience to which we informed the staff, we would not have returned to this pub/restaurant again except they gave us some vouchers and I must say I am glad we returned a couple of weeks later as we had a lovely Sunday lunch and the service was very good and I would recommend fir a nice lunch.
I think I would perhaps not go if it was a busy popular time unless you only cater for how many you can comfortably manage without putting yourselves and staff in the firing line for dissatisfied customers.
We have dined here many times over the last ten years and the standard has varied considerably depending on the owners. On this occasion the restaurant was very busy but they were able to serve all food quickly. Food was good we had roast beef and all the trimmings. It would have been nice to be asked how rare we wanted the beef cooked as everyone has different tastes and asking might improve the overall satisfaction.
Lovely staff. Delicious food (roast) but not very hot. On mentioning this the cost of the drink was taken off of the bill. A nice gesture.
My party of four all enjoyed our experience at the Inn. We were instantly welcomed at reception and guided to our table. Menu selection was unhurried and we didn't have to wait long for our meals and the staff were very attentive. The ambience and fellow guests were conducive the overall experience. We intend returning when we continue our walk further along the estuary.
Great ambience and decor. Really nice and warm with lots of lovely fires for a chilly winter’s night. Excellent service with friendly staff. Really like the option of the choices for smaller appetites. Would be good if there were a few more dishes included in that section of the menu. The food itself was tasty, nicely cooked and well presented. It wasn’t that busy the night I met friends there so the noise level was pretty quiet. Not sure what it would be like if all the tables were full. Would definitely go back again especially as the train stops very close by.
great staff, great atmosphere, good wine
always friendly. really lovely bar area and two log fires
I really enjoyed my birthday lunch at the Puffing Billy. The food was delicious and the staff were friendly and helpful.
Very busy on Boxing Day but seamless service and no delay on food. Always a lovely spot with great seasonal options.
Lovely visit as usual. Great food and lovely atmosphere
Great service and fantastic food served.
Meal on Christmas Eve and attentive staff with really tasty food offered.
Lovely atomosphere and really friendly staff. Sadly very disappointed in the food quality of the festive menu. In all honesty would have expected better from an establishment of this reputation. To charge an extra £5 for a scallop starter was excessive and roast turkey dinner was a let down. Stuffing really quite unpleasant and sadly turkey meat dry. Vegetable selection was over cooked and bland. We had considered booking for Christmas Day but in all honesty glad we didn’t as if food quality was the same as Christmas Eve we would have felt cheated.
Great place for a family gathering or meal out.
Friendly, welcoming staff, good food and very fair prices - strongly recommended
Lovely food and friendly staff, very attentive. Would recommend to anyone!
Had the set Christmas menu which was really worth having the 3 courses for. Good selection. Starters didn’t know which one to choose very nice blade of beef excellent putting my business hat on ( so looking at it from the other side) be careful on your veg portions the customer always wants enough but be careful not to overload perhaps the staff could say if you want more just ask or do this when they check food is meeting expectations
Dessert panna cotta was too firm. Excellent Christmas treat for just husband and wife.
