The food and the service was just what I've come to expect from The Refuge. A-MA-ZING and EX-CEP-TION-AL dah-lings! The easiest 5 stars I have ever given.

I love Sunday roast! This week I booked to try out with my date at night.
It was good. Very good service. We ordered the Sunday roast to share which is £39 for chicken pork and beef for two people. Very good value. I personally like their beef and chicken more. The Yorkshire pudding is not crispy enough but overall is good! Value for money.
I also like their renovation! High ceiling! Definitely recommend for date and family dinner

I have been looking forward to my Sunday roast at the Refuge for a long time now and unfortunately I was really disappointed.

When we were seated we placed our order. About twenty minutes later we were told by staff that there was a delay in the cooking so we would be waiting another 15 minutes. Additionally the sides we asked for had run out. I was really disappointed to see that two tables seated after us not only got served the exact same main course as us without the apparent delay we experienced, but also we’re given the sides we had asked for but were told had run out.

The food did not arrive for a further 25 minutes (as opposed to the 15 we were promised). Our waitress was apologetic but unfortunately this did really taint our experience. It’s not nice to see people seated after you being served before you, and it’s not nice to be told that the food you’ve asked for has run out and see it being handed out to other people who ordered after you.

It was a real shame as the staff were very lovely and the food when it did come was superb! I just wish we had not had the experience we did.

Gorgeous food and atmosphere. We were made to feel welcome by all the staff especially the main waiter who put up with our (slightly strange) demands!
Super impressed and we will definitely be back soon :)

Really love The Refuge and think the setting is lovely. Have rated lower than last time just as the food wasn’t piping hot, it was a bit difficult to get staff attention and the service was a bit slow. However staff were all lovely and happy to help when they were called over - assuming these things were all because it was a busy Saturday so I think it’s fair to give them so leeway and assume this wasn’t a reflection of how it is usually. Would definitely come again.

No food waa served for over half an hour. Starter came with main. Some arrived cold. Very disappointed as its been fabulous before. Gave us 50% off but would have preferred an lovely food experience as before. They made a note we were going to the theatre and still food arrived very late.

Came for my husband’s birthday as this is our favourite place for a Sunday dinner and I have to admit, it fell short of their usual standard. The roasties were poor, they were boiled, nothing “roasted” about them. We raised this to the server and she apologised and replaced them with some improved potatoes but still, not roasted. The pigs in blankets were also a little under-done, they were cooked don’t get me wrong, but everything just seem rushed! The platter came out really quickly, which usually I wouldn’t mind but we’d have preferred another 5 minute wait for a better presentation. And the portion of veg in the platter was just embarrassing; 2 carrots - so 1 each - and some green beans. Sorry but, no. It’s a shame really because we’ve always loved it here but it was mediocre. Our server was lovely but the food let us down this time so won’t be rushing back.

I usually love going to Volta however this time for my birthday the food was stone cold. We explained to the waiter who asked if we would like to send it back but we were so hungry we couldn’t wait more. The quality was also not to the same standard. I was really disappointed as I love this place and the ambiance.

Really bad. Terrible service, drinks took upwards of 20 minutes every time and the place was empty. They where training a new cocktail staff and the old fashioned was one of the worst I’ve ever had. Food was bland and lacking any substance.

Perfect location to go for pre theatre food and drink.
The welcome was warm and friendly and the food was an unexpected delight.
From the humours and flatbread to the most amazing tasty pork chop I have enjoyed anywhere. Well cooked and well presented a true joy.
Our waiter was always smiling and that's unusual in most bars in town of late !!!. He was attentive to our satisfaction without imposing on our dining.
The building itself is worth the visit and retains so much history in it's beautiful tiled walls.
With out any hesitation we would and will recommend anyone to share our experience.
Thankyou to all the team

Came for a date night and loved it! Amazing food, really good cocktails. We dined and then had a few drinks in the bar area which was so nice and had a really good atmosphere. Service was a little slow to begin with which was completely understandable with how busy it was. The staff were all really lovely and apologetic about it. Definitely will come again!

Went for a birthday dinner. Great ambiance, beautiful space. As a group a 4 we thought we could ask for a booth but told they were reserved for groups of 6+ and were seated at the high table. Just take note if that’s something you care about. Our server was really kind and attentive throughout the evening - was the highlight of the experience for sure. In terms of food, it was alright. It’s a small menu, sharing style but nothing on it reallyy grabs your attention. But the food came out hot, and was made well. Birthday girl was surprised with a little pudding which was very sweet and much appreciated. For whatever reason we had a lot of technical hiccups. Each round of food or drink came with a mistake. First round of drinks, we got a wrong drink. Second round, a glass instead of the bottle came. Food came out and went to the wrong table and then re-routed back to us. The bill came and had to be corrected 3 times. Overall I’d go back, but just for drinks and the atmosphere but you can skip dining in!

We were seated at a table away from the rest of the restaurant, next to a till and cutlery stand. There were plenty of nice free tables in the restaurant so we were unsure why we were seated there. We asked to move and the hostess told us that we were sat there because they were understaffed (?) but she did move us to a much nicer table which we appreciated.

Once seated drinks service was unfortunately quite slow but if they were understaffed we can forgive this. The food was nice but came out piping hot as though it had been microwaved…nonetheless it was tasty. Pudding however, was not enjoyable. A very strange tasting chocolate mousse with pineapple, it wasn’t nice at all.

The final thing which soured our experience was the waiter bringing our bill over shortly after we had finished our pudding. We hadn’t asked for the bill, we still had wine left and there was no offer of whether we’d like to order anything else (which we did, we wanted to order some after dinner cocktails after we had finished our wine). I felt this was incredibly rude as it wasn’t even 9pm. I asked what time they close and the waiter replied he likes to be out by 10-11ish…???? Really poor service and very rude. Such a shame. Why are diners having bills thrust at them whilst still finishing drinks, hours from closing time and in a quiet restaurant. This was even more disappointing as we were celebrating my boyfriend’s birthday, just left a bad impression for us both.

Visiting Manchester with a friend for their first visit and wanted Sunday lunch so chose the Refuge as I had stayed at the adjacent hotel before. The venue is superb. Initially we were given seats at a high table with stools, which we declined as not comfortable for eating (OK for drinks but not eating), staff quickly found us seats at a regular table. Unfortunately we were told that they had run out of Yorkshire pudding (quite fundamental for a Sunday roast!), but were offered free sides instead. I chose pork loin and my friend the beef, both were very good and we cleared the plates! Good value for money.

The food - amazing. The staf - fab! They explained the menu very well & were helpful. The background music was quite loud though & some of my party struggle to hear so if I had known it would be loud I would have chosen somewhere else as we struggled to hear each other. Would definitely come back again though with my friends. Loved the Salford Sling!

Waited 70 minutes for the drinks and 90 minutes for the food.

The alcoholic beverages don't seem like having any alcohol in them.

The lamb was burned, the food portion was really small.

And in the end, the waitress made a mess while collecting the dishes.

Beautiful building and decor. Great music and atmosphere Food was delicious Service friendly but they were short staffed

I’d booked well in advance but when we arrived the table wasn’t ready and then we were eventually shown to a table that was out of the way so good for social distancing but we felt a bit away from everything and everyone

The central area for drinks had beautiful lighting and I will return
