Twenty minutes north of York in the pretty village of Hovingham, the Worsley Arms is a gorgeous country house that was built in the 1840s as a spa hotel. Complete with open log fires and elegant furnishings, it houses a warm and cosy restaurant that looks out over the pretty village green. The feel is traditional, the food top-notch. Start with smooth duck liver pâté with granary toast and the Worsley Arms’ own chutney then tuck into breast of chicken with sweet potato mash, wilted pak choi and a fragrant coriander, ginger and lime jus. Finish light with a cool, refreshing sorbet or go the whole hog with the handmade pineapple, mango and raspberry trifle. This restful, informal hotel makes a hospitable base for exploring the Yorkshire countryside but the restaurant is a great reason to visit in its own right.

    Very traditional country hotel with attentive friendly service. Good quality, tasty food. It was quiet when we went due to being a sunny day and everyone out but I was told the hotel was full for bank holiday. Came home and booked a weekend here for later in the year. Very nice area.

    We stayed at Worsley Arms because we wanted to be near Castle Howard. Hovingham is a picturesque village. The market some Saturday mornings is worth a visit
There is nothing remarkable about Worsley Arms as a place. 
Two things made the place exceptional: first the owners Tony and Sally supported by their extrovert musician son Josh, and assistant Debs. They wanted to help Jyoti. Then the chef - some really good cooking there. We had meals both nights their lamb on root herb risotto, calves liver and chicken and vegetable risotto. Dessert one day was a melee of rhubarb and gin.

    Very relaxed lunch and nothing too much trouble, although it was not on the menu when we asked if it would be possible to have ice cream for pud, the result was a wonderful selection of different flavoured miniature cornets.

    The only reason to mark down the ambience was the evening was the quietest night after New Year so only a few diners.
