Had a lovely evening celebrating my birthday - fabulous food, culminating with a surprise birthday dessert at the end. Very nice surprise from The Richard Onslow. Will definitely bs back xx
Great food, great service.
We were disappointed with the Sunday roast as we had read the description on the website and were really looking forward to it. The meal was very mediocre with tough meat being hidden under pools of lukewarm gravy. The pork came with good crackling but no apple sauce. In fact the beef and pork were treated the same with Yorkshire puddings on all plates.
The service was friendly but intermittent with staff forgetting we were there.
We would not recommend this restaurant and will not be returning ourselves.
Great reception , great service , great food , very enjoyable lunch .
Perfect! The service was fantastic lovely friendly girls and the food was delicious too. We had the pancakes and full English. Nothing was to much trouble look forward to going back.
Pricing is getting a bit high for a gastro pub style but still enjoyable
Excellent food service and lovely surroundings. Well situated in centre of Cranleigh and easy to park close by
Very slow - almost an hour for an English breakfast - food was very good.
Great place wigh great staff and food.
The Onslow blows hot and cold.......today was cold. Service was poor (waited 20 mins before main course plates were cleared......and then had to ask), roast lamb was stringy, fatty left overs, no decent slices. Roast pork pretty tasteless and veg not very warm. Sea Bass was very good though. Asked for apple sauce that never arrived. One dessert came without cream. Didn’t complain at time as we had guests. Felt invisible at times. Just such a shame they can’t be consistent because when they are good they are very good.
Thoroughly enjoyable evening with excellent food, wine, service and ambiance.
A thoroughly lovely way to spend a Christmas Eve luncheon
We gathered together, as workers connected with the Construction industry, for a Christmas meal and get together. The food was exceptional, service with great detail.
Overall this was a really good value experience for us. Many thanks.
Fulfilled expectations of host and guest. Hopes for a profound wine list not really satisfied.
The roast lamb which I had was very disappointing, thick slices and difficult to cut. having said that my daughter had beef which was fine and my grandson chicken which was also fine.
I should have drawn the manager's attentention to the lamb which I had been given
We had lunch here a couple of weeks ago and my guest and I ordered the goat cheese and beetroot salad from the set menu. When it arrived it was a pile of rocket and 3 very small cubes of goat cheese. We sent it back and it came back with slightly less rocket, a little more cheese and 3 slivers of beetroot. We were basically told that's what you get for a portion off the set menu.
Despite this experience we decided to have dinner there last night. Twice we were asked if we wanted to order without having been shown the specials board. In the end we had to ask to see it. My husband ordered a potted crab starter. As there were 2 crab starters on the menu the waitress checked which one he wanted. In spite of this the wrong one came. When it arrived it was served in a small round glass bowl making it very difficult to eat.
I ordered the scallop and monkfish risotto. The fish and scallop were cooked beautifully but the risotto was swimming in liquid, resembling a very soggy rice pudding. When the manager asked how the food was I expressed my disappointment at the risotto and he said he would let the chef know.
For my main I had ordered a slow cooked lamb, with peas, carrots and barley, which I expected to be a sort of stew. What came was a barley risotto, again swimming in liquid with lamb chunks on top. The lamb was well cooked and tender but the stock the risotto was swimming in was thin and flavourless. This time the manager did offer something else which I declined and he did deduct it from the bill.
Having been regular diners at the Richard Onslow over a number of years it is very sad to see that the quality of the food and service has fallen so much. As other reviewers have said the food isn't cheap but always used to be good quality, sadly not anymore.
The food was well prepared but we were disappointed to wait thirty minutes for our starters and a further thirty minutes for our main courses. Appreciate that Saturday lunch time is busy but it was too long.
That aside, it is a lovely pub and the staff were generally friendly and helpful.
An excellent Sunday lunch for 3 couples in a great environment with friendly, helpful service. Will definitely revisit.
Very pleasant with friendly and attentive staff. Food delicious.
We have been to The Richard Onslow many times and always enjoyed it. However, this time it seemed as if there were not enough staff to deal with the customers. Two girls trying to run the Bar and the Restaurant. This meant that service was slow and attention to detail was missing. Had to keep asking for things. But, we will visit again as it is usually very good and this was not a criticism about individual staff, who did their best under difficult circumstances.
beautifully decorated in lovely bold but calm colours, big windows and high ceilings, this place oozes style. The food was fantastic and the service very good, once they remembered that they had sat us down and we needed menus.
I had sea bass with chowder, and it was extremely good. My son and his girlfriend had fish and chips - but not as you know it. It looked very good and they said it was more than that.
I thought it was also very good value for money, for food cooked that well and a place with this style. Would definitely recommend it.
It became a little noisy as the restaurant filled up and our food order was not quite right, but on the whole a very nice experience, which I would definitely repeat.
We come here approx every other month with friends. On this occasion the service wasn't as good as normal. We had ordered the mini loaves to start with but they were a long time arriving. (Forgotten?). We were only half way through when the main courses arrived whereas normally things are a bit leisurely i.e. time between courses! This said everyone was pleased with the main courses. Although the guy's said the steaks weren't quite as good as normal. The fishcake was lovely as were the scallops. The desserts were nice - an unusual take on the cheesecake - white chocolate and strawberry was delicious.
We sat inside and ordered braised beef starter followed by burgers. The staff were very friendly and polite and helpful. The decor and atmosphere is nice.
The starter was lovely however burgers took ages to arrive and had to be chased up by waitresses after half an hour of waiting after the starter. It looked nice but the meat was hard and the bacon tough aswell. Not the best burgers we have had.
Booked last minute as reviews were very good and they had a table for the time we wanted.
Very nice interior. Comfortable seats. Attentive, friendly staff. Excellent roasts. Good menu with lots of choice. Will definitely go back!
I can only comment on the services I have used, which have all been very good - see above. The location is very convenient for me within walking distance, and I have twice benefited from the February discounts
We have been here several times now and always enjoy the food. This latest occasion there were new staff who were very good. (Although a little hasty to get you to make up your mind!). It's not a complaint as such but it is always rather noisy and sometimes you have difficulty hearing one another. That said we will be re-booking again in April. (Our friends will be on a long vacation prior to this!). I personally, am not a big eater and would like to see more options on the starters that can be chosen as mains. I had the scallops last time and this time I had the sea bass from the main menu which was a good choice. I can't cope with piled up plates - it puts me off eating.
It would be nice to see some Saturday night offer such as 2 courses for a fixed price maybe the first Saturday of the month.....just a thought.
Really great pub - the food is like fine dining but at more like pub prices. A mixture of impressive, smart dining areas and cosy pub seating.
We have been here previously and had a good meal and a good overall experience, so I wouldn't write The Richard Onslow off on the basis of one poor experience. On this occasion, unfortunately, while the service started while, it declined dramatically throughout the meal, tailing off to the point that when our dessert dishes were cleared (after a good 15-20 minuted of us actually having finished), rather than offer us coffee at that stage, the plates were swept away with the comment 'done', the waitress then studiously avoided our table to the extent that we went and ordered our coffees and the bill form the bar. We noticed other diners also having to work quite hard to get things such as drinks and dessert menus.
The food, unusually in my experience, was average. My steak was rather rubbery - having said that, my wife enjoyed her dessert, chocolate and shortbread with a little milkshake.
This is the first time I have not left a tip. The food being a little average I can forgive , as every kitchen can have an off night. The poor service from the disinterested waitress, I can't.*
*Actually, in the interest of fairness, if you did manage to catch her attention and ask for something, she would politely and cheerfully go and get it, she was the least proactive waitress I have ever encountered. You should never have to work that hard to get a coffee, a menu, a drink, the bill etc....
Booked a table for 6 for a family Christmas get together. An extra person and two dogs didn't phase the staff at all. They sorted us out a bigger table in a dog friendly part of the pub with out any fuss. We had a lovely relaxed long lunch. Food and service good without being too intrusive.
The Black out night on Armistice Day was a brilliant, touching idea, the war time menu was inspired and delicious and the service at The Richard Onslow was exceptional. We'll definitely be returning to try what we had originally planned to have off the yummy autumn menu, which we changed to things from the wartime menu on the night!
At the last minute we booked using the easy online system and arrived for pre dinner drinks near the open log fire, which was perfect. For a Saturday night we were surprised that we were only one of five dining tables all night so the room was quiet and empty most of the night. The attentive staff closed the doors to the bar when the customers got a little rowdy which was the sensible thing to do. The food was of a very good standard. The pork belly (£17.50) was soft and sweet and very tasty. The salmon en croute (£14.50) was delicious. We ordered a side of chips (£3.50) and were glad we did. The food was lovely though on the pricey side. If it were a little more reasonable we would definitely be eating there regularly but at these prices it's more of a planned dining experience. Overall the food, staff, ambience was very good. A lovely meal out.
We were a large group with 3 children and they were extremely accommodating when i had managed to mess up how many i booked for and two of our party arrived very late effectively missing brunch.
They were also very tolerant to three (well-behaved but boisterous) children playing together as they moved into lunch service which i know is difficult when they just need to get on but much appreciated as our group rarely get together.
And the food and service was delicious and swift.
29th-30th August This restaurant promised so much and I was looking forward to it along with my stay overnight. The room and the young man that settled me in were both perfect. The restaurant was a disappointment. My first choice of main was not available yet saw it delivered to another table. The option I went with was however delicious and fresh. A couple of times I asked for things and they did not arrive without reminder this being the case with dessert. Worst aspect was having the main course I did not get added to my bill and the girl took my receipt saying she would take it off . However at check out I had to say it again before it was removed. Shame as could have stayed another night but that put me off. Breakfast also a washout - gave up and left. Food is good however.
We decided to go there on a whim and very glad we did.....the food and service were excellent.
Excellent all round, great food and attentive and friendly staff. We thoroughly enjoyed our evening meal and breakfast.
Tables very spacious, food extremely tasty and nicely presented. I would definitely recommend this gastro pub.
Fantastic and amazing food everytime we have been. The staff are friendly and accomodating too. We will be back again and again and again.
Food was poor, cold, reheated and overpriced. Do not go to this Pub!
