We enjoyed a lovely meal at this comfortable restaurant. It is a place we return to for special occasions for excellent food and service. The beer pickled onions accompanying the ham hock starter dish were amazing. The rump steak was cooked to perfection. The service was friendly and timely.
Quirky traditional hotel / pub / restaurant.
Various seating areas, but main restaurant area quite compact. Service good, but food simply outstanding. There is an a la carte or fixed price menu, both are good value with great vegetarian options (wife). Local produce, freshly cooked to order. Some of the best pub / small restaurant food we have eaten. Not surprising that you need to book in advance. If you love your food, you will really enjoy this restaurant.
Once again an exceptional meal in a great location
Staff were very professional
Would return and recommend
This is a great place to relax and enjoy a meal or a snack either in the restaurant or (on a warm dry day) in the beautiful garden opposite. The welcome is friendly, the service attentive but not intrusive by any means.
The food is always good and the quality is the same whichever part of the menu you choose.
The location is just a stone’s throw from Haytor which is a stunning place to walk on Dartmoor. There is inevitably a drawback and in this case, it’s parking, which isn’t easy and is in short supply on the lane.
Whether you are a visitor or a local, this place is well worth visiting.
Poor inattentive service. Felt like the room we were in was forgotten by waitresses.
The Rock Inn is nestled away in a beautiful part of the Dartmoor Country Park. It has a homely feel to it and serves good food, which can be followed by a stroll up to Haytor Rocks to burn off a few calories.
Only disappointment was being sat on the table between the toilets. My partner would have liked more vegetarian choices. But, that said it’s the 2nd time we’ve been and the food, service and presentation were great. Thank you.
Waitress was very polite, pleasant and attentive.Just the right mix, not pushy but cheerful and patient. Food was excellent, all our party thought so but the portions are quite small and there were not many chips with my steak.
Very enjoyable meal and atmosphere. the female staff were very attentive, but the man in charge could in my opinion have a warmer customer approach.
The food as usual was very enjoyable but I have noticed that the portions are becoming more modest in size.
whilst I fully understand that the cost of preraring a meal has increased, please do not get a reputation for poor value for money
Beautiful roast beef and fantastic yorkshire pudding but apart from the latter, portion sizes were tiny! We love the pub and the food, as always, tasted amazing, however beef, veg and potatoes were certainly ungenerously provided. As for my two 'scoops' of delicious ice cream (£4), they were literally rounded teaspoons. A bitter disappointment for the money.
We booked a table for Valentine Day dinner. It was a wonderful menu with lots of dishes I would have like to have had, and absolutely delicious food which was beautifully presented. We could hear people around us commenting on how good the food was. I have already recommended friends to go there; I assume the chef works there regularly? Lovely Ashridge cider at the bar too.
Lovely atmospheric pub/restaurant in Haytor Vale. The service is welcoming and attentive. A good choice of food on the menu and daily specials offer well cooked pub grub at lunchtime and more in the evening. Fires in the winter and a big garden in the summer makes this an excellent find and worth a visit if you're nearby.
We had a lovely meal here on Monday lunchtime. We love this pub. The service is great and the menus are original but not too out there. They change the menu too so it’s always nice to see what’s on on that day. They’ve kept the traditional pub feel with reasonable prices. Highly recommended but gets busy so book a table
Excellent food...lovely setting...would recommend to eat and drink
Nice, informal and friendly. Good food, STP was excellent. Great location for walks on Dartmoor. Vegetarian options, though more would be good. Dog friendly which was okay for us (we like dogs) but not so good if you have allergies or don’t like dogs around when you are eating.
Lovely food, prompt service and great atmosphere. We really enjoyed our lunch here and will be back soon!
Lovely olde worlde Inn with lovely accomodation in a beautiful area. Staff very friendly. We enjoyed our meal and one night stay
Fantastic service, delicious food and a very cosy atmosphere.
We went with friends for our annual Christmas lunch out. The Rock is very welcoming and the food was excellent and very good value. We would strongly recommend this place . I can't think of of anything negative to comment on.
Second time we have been and second time we enjoyed the meal. Located on the edge of the Moor, ideal spot for lunch and then a walk. Service quite slow but staff friendly and who is in a rush on Dartmoor? Good all rounder.
I like this place, second time now. Fine looking building with very good food and friendly staff. Very enjoyable.
All the food is prepared and cooked on site and the standard is exceptional. They use real napkins not flimsy 'tissues' and the glasses and cutlery are always sparkling clean. The atmosphere is warm and comforting with open fires and dark wood panelling throughout. Love it!
We had a very enjoyable lunch. Plenty of food choices and well balanced. The portion sizes were good. The crispy duck ballottine very good as was the goats cheese. Would have felt confident to order anything as the standard of food and presentation is very high. Whole plaice delicious, potatoes a little al dente but I can live with that! Very good fish and chips with crispy batter. Service efficient and friendly. Looking forward to returning!
We had a lost stop at The Rock Inn to mark the end of a lovely holiday and it really did everything we wanted
Everything about the Rock Inn is fabulous and the food is to die for!
Service was superb, the staff are always polite and friendly and the food was second to none! Well worth the visit and recommend to anyone thinking of coming to The Rock Inn!
Beautifully prepared and presented food in cosy surroundings.
Wonderful hidden Gem! Lovely staff. Very warm and cosy and the food is ridiculously good!! So awesome! Highly recommend for anybody visiting dartmoor and looking for great food in an authentic setting. Will definitely go again!
Wonderful place..great food, friendly staff. Have been several times for a variety of occasions and every time has been perfect! Cannot recommend this place highly enough, well worth a visit.
It was the most perfect, romantic dinner. The staff were lovely, the food was amazing and we loved the restaurant! If we do come back down to Devon we'll be sure to visit again and have the chance to eat in the new restaurant area!
We love the Rock inn and have never had a bad meal although we have to travel a fair distance we are always very happy with the service and food.
A very enjoyable evening, the food and service is a credit to the owners.
Stopped for lunch on our way home to Dorset. Food and service were excellent, would certainly call again
Good food, the pud was exceptional, good service and great company.
Warm welcome from the staff on a rainy night on the moor. Shut the door and leave the hound outside!
It was just right for our 52 anniversary. Having been there many times and never had a poor experience.
just keep the standard up , and never let it fall. We come to this restaurant when ever we are in the area as we know the quality and service is always first class.
Stayed at Rock and room and breakfast were excellent as well. Will definitely come back for a weekend to explore the moors
We had a special dinner to celebrate our wedding anniversary and a family member's 85th birthday. Our first time in the new conservatory and it's lovely. The decor complements the original pub beautifully. Food is certainly 'fine dining' rather than pub grub these days. I enjoyed the Monkfish very much indeed! Highly recommended.
