Afternoon Tea at The Rose Lounge, Sofitel London St. James

Afternoon Tea
The stunning Sofitel London St James is located in the former home of Cox’s and King’s bank in the very heart of London, England. This sympathetically renovated building is English heritage grade II listed and now houses one of London's most unique five-star hotels - combining traditional British design with a contemporary style that is unmistakably French.

Inspired by our pastry chef Jamie Warley’s travels in France.
Jamie wants to bring a mix of classic French flavours whilst also moving away from the standard concept of finger sandwiches by introducing something different to the savoury offering with dishes.

The Rose Lounge features a very feminine décor with a subtle colour scheme of pink and cream, deep wool rugs and a fifties chandelier, creating a delicate and fresh ambience complemented by stunning displays of fresh roses.

The rose lounge provides an informal yet elegant meeting place to get away from the hustle and bustle of the West End.

Great selection of savoury and sweet pastries. The portion was just nice and right. House champagne was also a delight.

The place is lovely and service exceptional. However, The afternoon tea it self is way over priced. This might be because it is their Xmas edition, but still.

Firstly, the staff were very friendly and accommodating, really appreciate the service we received on the day. Secondly, the menu was wonderful and unique, I don't think any other afternoon tea would serve French Onion soup to start. Lovely selection of savouries and sweet treats, and a special little extra dessert to say Happy Birthday. The Rose Lounge itself is very pretty and cosy. I would recommend afternoon tea here for a special occasion or even just a nice treat!

Very nice. Food was exquisite and friendly staff eventually. It was quiet so initially there wasn't someone to greet us but it improved from there.

Excellent high tea I have ever had. I researched all the high teas before I booked this. I cannot be happier with the food quality, tea and service. It was just wonderful.

Very disappointed in their menu change. Their gluten-free afternoon tea has been my favorite for about three years and although their new menu was ok, it was no where near as good as before. However their new sparkling tea at the back of the menu was very good.

Afternoon tea was not very good at all. The sandwiches were too basic, with barely any filling. A small slice of ham in a brioche with nothing else, for example, is disgraceful. The scones were not airy and fluffy (supermarket ones taste better) and the cakes were average. The so-called carrot cake was horrible. All clearly mass produced days ahead. The harpist did not turn up either. The price they charge is also more than advertised on open table. Overall, very poor - primarily because the food was so low quality. You could have assembled a tastier afternoon tea using pre-made food from the nearby Tesco express. £100 for 2 people at that price is borderline theft. Please ensure this review is published.

Overall a lovely afternoon experience in a small hotel in st James. The dining room was surprisingly small hosting only approx 10 small tables, in a very girly pink and rose theme. The staff were extremely courteous and attentive, with nothing being too much trouble. Food wise everything was a delight to behold! We felt the sandwiches could have been a little more adventurous playing more on the Christmas theme. The scones were delicious 😋 . The cakes were an interesting mix, maybe a little over sweet but there was definitely an ample amount of everything for the 3 of us.

I was looking forward to this but it was not as good as I had hoped. Regrettably, something disagreed with me and so until at least midnight that night I was bothered by significant GI distress, which has not helped my perspective on the experience. I also did not appreciate that at least two others in the relatively small room were carrying on at least three conversations using their cellphones. There wasn't always somebody readily available in the room for service inquiries. The room itself was very well appointed, but the chair that I was in was sitting too low. The presentation of the tea was well done, every bit what I was expecting, but the bread on some of the sandwiches was not as fresh as it could have been. I was surprised that there was only clotted cream and one jam for the scones; it would have been nice to also have a lemon curd or a marmalade. I requested a marmalade and it was provided.

A delightful cosy intimate lounge to spend time with special friends on my 60th birthday.
The service was a tiny bit slow and was served in 3 servings but did not spoil our tea.

What a lovely place ! A beautifully decorated room and impeccable service. Tea was delicious- a wonderful assortment of tea sandwiches and sweets with a nice glass of champagne to start off. All the while being serenaded by harp music. We really enjoyed the entire experience.

This was my second time having afternoon tea at the Rose Lounge, and both experiences were excellent. If you want to feel like royalty, this is the place to go. The sandwiches were delicious as were the scones and desserts. I had an oolong tea, which I highly recommend. The service was top notch! Everything was just perfect!

Overpriced (£100 for two not including a bottle of water) afternoon tea in a small, windowless hotel lobby. No ambiance whatsoever save for adorable china.

The server rolled her eyes when the bellman told her we had arrived for our reservation. Not sure what that was about, but it was off-putting.

We were never offered more hot water to replenish our little teapots or milk even for the tea. The sandwiches were inedible. Possibly even bad as I’m still feeling a bit nauseated after the egg one I knew enough only to consume half of. The scones were small, but decent, and the sweets were beautiful, but as absolutely disgusting as the sandwiches. Bottom line: just spent $113 for four scones. Plenty of other tea houses to enjoy in London. Do yourself a favor and skip this one. It was empty for a reason.

I was with my mom and we would like to try an authentic English afternoon tea. We found this nice lounge randomly. The ambiance was superb, service was great, food is above standard. It is a great place to have some rest after shopping or walking.

Afternoon tea served in this Lounge near the main entrance of the Sofitel St. James. The room is an explosion of pink, but it’s rather small and there are few tables, but all is proportionate. There are a lot of flower and candles. An harp player entertains the guests and the atmosphere is very relaxed. There are a selection of different teas from which you can choose what you prefer: my tea was so good and spicy. The entire afternoon tea provides a selection of sandwiches and scones and pastries, all of them were delicious.
Service fast and friendly.

I think you have to increase the food, the angus steak was poor and the tuna was not able to finish. To bad food for that amount of money. We will not come back for the food, maybe for the music.

An informal lounge for an afternoon tea. High quality produce and some inventiveness, especially with the teas and cakes. Good service. A little too slow for out liking. Got tipsy on champagne in the funky wine bar afterwards :)

The harpist was excellent as well. Highly recommended, especially for those who are looking for gluten free.

Afternoon tea/ the rose lounge/ both members of staff were all amazing and I would definitely recommended it. The only thing I was disappointed by was when the harp player came in to test the instrument which wasn’t the right time to do so when guests are trying to relax. She proceeded to play but the room is quite small so it was overbearing and not nice. The music they had playing before was much more calming.

Lovely setting with great service & food & drink. However, we paid £51 & did not have a glass of champagne included for this. Also we asked for some more tea after an hour but they just topped it up with hot water so no tea flavour or colour left - just hot water. Only 4 tiny sandwiches each & 1 scone each & shared 4 small cakes between us. Not very good value for money

The Rose Lounge is a space that is decorated beautifully, and when we went there was a harp player. The food was nice, but I would say the value for money it is a bit expensive for what you are getting. I suppose you are paying for the atmosphere. The cucumber salmon sandwich was the best-tasting. The service needs to be better organised. The waiters were nice and accommodating, however we saw they were spread thin between the bar and the Rose lounge, so we had to wait to put more orders in for tea or the sandwiches, and also to bring in the dessert, as we had finished for quite some time before we found someone to help. Would it be too much to ask for waitstaff to be in the room when you have a table of 6 paying £270 for afternoon tea? This is a management issue obviously.

The hotel was lovely and the service was great on the day. The ambience was great and the chef also came out to see how our afternoon tea was which I thought was a nice touch. There was some confusion over priceto start with, we we’re advised by email the afternoon tea at the rose lounge was £28 and when we got there it was £45 with a service charge so came to £52. That was quite annoying based on the principle of being given wrong information. Would definitely go again.
