The Rudloe Arms
Second visit in 2 weeks. If you like great food, excellent service in a slightly quirky environment you must visit. The Groupon even with the supplements for the Steak, sides and wine still represented great value. Portion sizes were surprisingly large for a 6 course taster and we were struggling to finish by the end of our meal. We will definitely return in the future with or without Groupon.
Not your norm which is why we liked it so much. Candles, quirky artwork , excellent food and a very attentive french waitress. The Prosecco and wine was very good too.
Only thing not quite excellent was the coffee!
Enjoyed everything apart from the game pie that was minced and very strange.
Met by staff who barked at us that we were too early ! Ushered to bar area to have expensive £12:50 g&t. No real explanation of food so it was a guess on the amuse. One staff member with a terrible split in her sleeve had a face like thunder and attitude to match, why was she there ? Food above ok but nothing special, so disappointing from MPW.
Should’ve taken my wife elsewhere, won’t return for expensive night out.
A superb setting & as you would hope delicious food. What was a little disappointing was no welcome or advice where to go! Entering the premises you immediately realise it’s a little different, not your normal restaurant, so help & clarification would have been much appreciated. After wandering in & out of various room we finally found the eating area. Again a delay of about 5 mins before we were greeted & shown to our table. We ended up getting the wrong meals - 2x steak & pepper sauce instead of 1x venison & 1x steak with garlic butter that we ordered! But all was so nice we just ate it! We had a deal for 4 people but 2 were ill & the restaurant accommodated us with a selection of options that we were very happy with. Delicious food fab setting some great service but some left a little wanting. Perhaps a little complacency has set in? Still, would definitely visit again the overall experience well worth while & very enjoyable.
Gloomy setting. Sitting rooms decorated with reptiles pickled in bottles. Not conducive to dining. Given a 6-course menu, told we could have 2 or 3 courses but 3 cheaper than 2. Waitress could not explain why. My husband chose steak which had a £12 supplement. It was approximately 4 ounces and when he complained was told it was part of the 6 course menu which was not explained when he ordered it. Extortionately priced Pinot Grigio rose - £35. Certainly not returning.
Service awful. Staff rude. Hotel poor. All in all very unwelcoming and good 3rd rate. I have tried to complain but they are not interested. Totally spoilt our weekend.
We came on a voucher offer. The service and ambience were most
impressive. Waitress delightful, helpful and made our evening.
The amuse bouches were not tasty but pea and ham soup was fine,
these two offerings were non-optional,so the advertised six
course menu only offered three choices.
Starters interesting and enjoyable.
Only three main courses without £12.50 supplement.
Mains needed vegetable accompaniments, a charge of
£4 for 8 new potatoes was steep! We felt at least one veg
option should have been included in price.
Overall would have felt hard-done by if we had paid full whack.
Drinks prices extortionate - fortunately had been forewarned, however
£23 for two vodka and tonics was ludicrous. Wine prices at expected level.
Sorry at London prices for drinks we will not be coming again.
Did not feel this offered true value for money.
Excellent food and service. Great night out.
Drinks are ridiculously expensive. Supplements on chips, peas, some starters and venison. Took 2.5 hours for 2 people to eat, service was slow but one positive is the food got better as you progressed through the 6 courses. Staff were friendly but over worked in the restaurant
A hidden gem. The food was exquisite, and with a prix fixe menu that had a baseline of 0, the value was incredible. We had a $200+ meal for 2 here for under $50. If you are in the area, this is a place not to miss for fine dining.
Just a very unique experience. One we won’t forget (in a really good way!)
Overall a very disappointing and strange experience, due to confused and inept service. When we arrived we were told "you will be having six courses, since that's what you booked for." I said we hadn't booked for anything in particular and after much confusion the server said we could have either three or four courses, as the menu stated. Next, another server brought soup and canapés before our drink order had been taken. I protested that we hadn't ordered the food, and hadn't even decided on how many courses or on wine. We were told the soup and canapés are always served and we could choose 3 or 4 other courses. I was told the sommelier would come take our drinks order. 15 minutes later, no drink order had been taken and another server arrived to say the soup and canapés had been our first course, although we hadn't chosen or wanted it. How hard is this for overly made-up, underfed young ladies in long dresses and aprons that made them look like they were in a dull version of The Handmaid's Tale?
The food was satisfactory, however with no explanation or enthusiasm about it from the servers.
Although we had booked a table for two, our reservation was not really acknowledged. The seating was set up like a boarding school. It was extremely noisy. Service was very poor with drinks taking up to 20mins to arrive. Food was good but now what was expected. Would not recommend this to anyone, certainly not if you want something quiet or romantic.
The restaurant was quite dark so it was impossible to read the menu and had to use phone torches. The noise level was quite loud at times the music was too loud we had to keep repeating ourselves to be heard.
The food was good, but being a set menu I didn’t feel the first 2 courses were up to the same standard as the main. They felt pre-prepared, and thrown together. We stayed for 2 nights and were disappointed that the starters were the same on both days!
Overall the atmosphere was good and service quite good but improvements could definitely be made.
Overall it was disappointing. I had expected something special but it was very average and our meals were not consistently well cooked. On top of that service is very slow, to the point of you wanting to leave rather than try waiting for a dessert. Shame as the place could have real potential
Absolutely outstanding!!!!! Unique to any stay we have ever had for travels to places and countries anywhere.
We had an absolutely fantastic meal at The Rudloe Arms. The setting is gorgeous and the ambience of the restaurant was perfect for a romantic meal. The service was outstanding, attentive, friendly and the waitresses were very knowledgeable about the menu and the wine list. The food was outstanding too with the best steak I have ever eaten. I can also thoroughly recommend the rice pudding with sherry soaked prunes for dessert! After a fabulous meal you can relax in one of the many lounges filled with so many quirky and original ornaments and pictures you could spend hours looking at them all around the hotel!
We will definitely be back soon for another meal as we are lucky enough to have this unique place close to home.
A very enjoyable evening with great food, we will be returning for cocktails
A rare opportunity for us to enjoy a place that is informal, welcoming, comfortable and superb: MPW’s labor of love
A really enjoyable visit to the Rudloe Arms for our 42nd wedding anniversary celebration meal. Also an unexpected surprise to meet M.P.W. in person. Excellent food and service - will certainly recommend and we intend to return before too long.
Ray and Margaret (Warmley, Bristol).
I had a bit of a mixed bag honestly. The place itself is beautiful and the area around it stunning. The price of $30 for a 3 course meal is certainly a great value! That being said none of my party was blown away by the quality of food. I understand the point of this menu is to not be overly complicated but, it was just that the dishes were only so-so in taste and planning.
The starters were the best part and my entree was just a huge amount of polenta which was creamy but overly cheesy with only some cooked spinach to garnish. It was a oddly unbalanced plate and also had the unpleasant effect of waking me up in the middle of the night with an upset stomach. My wife had better luck with a so-so pot pie that wasn't close to as good as the simple ones found in any roadside pub. My friend got the steak (for an upcharge) which is what most people seemed to get and he said it was alright but not for the price.
I didn't have desert myself, as my entree put my stomach and palette off from eating for a while, but what the others had was fine. Wine was very expensive and service was uneven and took quite a while.
I don't want to knock it too hard as maybe I just made a bad entree choice but that being said, we were just left a little disappointed and had looked forward to this meal for a while.
Also, all the deserts (and most of the entrees) had a heavy dairy component, at least half of each desert so this is not a place to take anyone lactose intolerant or vegan, there wouldn't be anything for them.
Unless you are a steak lover and prepared to pay the £12.50 supplement there is a very limited choice on the Menu.
A full English breakfast also has a £5 supplement.
I had a special Birthday here. I would recommend highly if you want a treat. Was great to meet Marco and be shown around the fabulous hotel. Pure decadence! Loved it. We will be back soon. Stuart
Very disappointed with the choice on the menu, large sign on entrance saying steakhouse with no steak on the menu?
