The Salty Dog, Bangor, NI
We pride ourselves on using Irish ingredients to create traditional dishes with a difference. From breakfasts & bar snacks, to classic pub and restaurant dishes ... we work with local producers to bring the best of Ireland to the plate.
Food was not nice . It didn’t taste fresh . This used to be a really great restaurant but it was very disappointing and expensive
I am very sorry to hear this. It is not what we aim for. Can I ask when you were in and what you had so that we can check on the issues?
The service was excellent. Very helpful and polite staff. Food was delicious. Will def be back.
The food and service is generally of a good standard with a interesting menu and nice specials.
One negative is the dog friendly aspect of this hotel, personally I don’t want to be eating next to a table with dogs and dog bowls in the vicinity! But that is my own personal view.
Thank you for taking the time to leave a review and the kind comments. With regards to the dogs there are two areas of the restauarnt that do not have dogs in them. If you are booking in the future book a standard table and you should be seated in an area away from the dogs. Thank you again.
Excellent service from the staff and the food was amazing, couldn’t fault it. Will be back again.
Relaxed, welcoming, chilled atmosphere.
Cheerful attentive staff.
Nice warm reception for 4 legged friend.
Menu a little offbeat, though food also added to a laid back evening.
Thanks Salty Dog, whole family enjoyed.
Went on xmas eve for an afternoon tea. Although I’d emailed separately they didn’t know we wanted an afternoon tea but nothing was too much trouble and it was made relatively quickly. Everything was freshly made and the scones especially were some of the best I’ve ever had. Will def return
We both had rib eye steak and it was gorgeous chips and sauce also good. Not that fussed on the mushrooms or onion but that was just me, hubby loved it
Very comfy seating in the bar, great big sofa and cushions
This is a lovely place to eat and drink with great food and attentive staff.
Was there with family and we all had a very good night. The ambiance was excellent and the staff were very helpful and friendly.
Another lovely meal at this coastal delight. Opted for a special of lemon sole and wasn't disappointed. Very large portion which was delicious and accompanied by some local Irish gins.
We had a wonderful over night stay in salty dog as the owner of a service dog I was delighted to see regular dog owners with their fur babies enjoying the warm welcome atmosphere of this incredible hotel and restaurant. My friend and I were very impressed with the warm friendly staff excellent food and comfortable bedroom. I plan to return before Christmas with My service dog moo and having now checked it out would be very comfortable to travel with her to this wonderful hotel. The location of the hotel is very central to Bangor Town and the town itself is very pleasant with great walks .
Enjoyed a lovely meal. Relaxing atmosphere and good service.
Food and service were excellent, really friendly staff.
I would especially recommend to dog owners. If only there were more places like it.
Very welcoming and friendly staff. Menu choice was excellent. However one of the party was unhappy with his dish. He felt a bit disappointed with the fish and chips as his fish was rather dried out. Apart from that our other choices were very tasty
The food was amazing, we all enjoyed our meal immensely. Our server Lewis was fantastic fun and made sure we were well taken care of. 10/10 from us.
Wouldn't hesitate to recommend The Salty Dog. This was a last minute booking for 12 people plus a dog, and we all had a lovely breakfast. The staff were helpful and friendly throughout our visit even bringing water and doggy biscuits for the dog. Will definitely return.
Great Top class food ,
but service was extremely slow, 40 mins wait for bread with dips, concierge forgot to bring back menus on two occasions. The waiter that served most of our meal was very helpful within his control.
Good ambience and nice staff but my hake In parmaharm was a bit dry on it plus no red pepper puree
I enjoyed my fish and chips but I had actually wanted a salad, unfortunately there was no salad dish on the menu. I felt the menu was a little restricted in this regard.
Food was not off a great standard, the waiter was very good and nice
I am not sure how any self respecting chef could serve up such poorly cooked and presented food. The portions were small and it was virtually inedible. One of the worst meals I have ever had. It was very over priced. £14 for a tiny bowl of macaroni with some chese melted over it( making it so greasy) and a bowl of mixed leaves without any dressing as if they were pulled out of a packet from the suoermarket and a couple of slices of garlic bread. The tapande and humus starter had a few bits of toast crisps and tapande and humus bearly recognisable. Olives served with mixed pickled veg( just wierd) Crispy squid with fennel and orange salad sounded lovely but was a bowl of crispy squid with a few pieces of orange anf fennel completely buried underneath again making the dish overly greasy. The pulled pork dog had dry overcooked pulled pork on a burnt sub roll. Just looked brown and bland. The flat iron steak was tiny and tasteless. We were looking forward to a lovely family meal as the menu sounded good but were so disappointed and paying the bill at £100 for starters mains and drinks for 4, we felt we had been robbed.
Arrived on a Monday for a birthday lunch to be told the bistro menu was not on and there were no beef dishes available either. Order the portavogie scampi which was practically burnt. Asked for a new plate to be told that was the last of the scampi. Not impressed at all
We enjoyed our visit to so much that I bought a gift card to a colleague who is getting married next week and we will also be going back for my second daughter’s birthday dinner many thanks!
I went for mussels, my daughter had chicken strips. WOW, what a feed😊. My wife and my son went for the fish linguine. The portions were very small which was a surprise. It tasted wonderful so my only concern was that my wife and son were still hungry when we left.
I would still recommend the Salty Dog as a brilliant place to go and I will be back.
Appalling from beginning to end. 40 min wait for starters which were average, mains were burnt or missing elements. The only redeeming feature was that the experience was so bad that we didn’t have to pay. Father’s Day treat was completely ruined. If it was possible to give zero stars, I would.
Even though we had a table booked and assured we would be served promptly it took over 15 minutes to take our order for four. Then after being assured it would be here soon we waited over 40 minutes for our meal and in my case 45. An apology for being late but what was that after being int he Salty Dog for over an hour before my food was in front of me and then to be presented with burnt triple cooked chips maybe they should have only have been double cooked and kids didn’t finish theirs. All over a big disappointment as a birthday and Father’s Day treat.
Excellent idea and dogs including my friend’s dog were very well behaved
Stayed for one night in a sea view room which was spotlessly clean and well presented. The food was good but I thought that the menu was very limited. Overall we had a great stay and will definitely be back. The staff were all very attentive and friendly
Lovely place with great food :) A great place to bring your dog!
Young waitress was very knowledgable about the menu.. friendly efficient and extremely pleasant good SOH.
Food and drink served at nice pace and food was excellent.. finished off with the blood orange sponge cake!!! 🍓🍰
Nice atmosphere, it’s a while since we have been but will not be as long before we return!! 👍😀
Def recommend to friends.
Usually pet friendly means tie your dog outside , this is place couldn’t cater more for your pet if it tried , water bowl and mat brought out, blankets so he could sit beside us, towels so he could get cleaned after walking on the beach, lots of other lovely pets around not a noice or whimper very calm. It was very busy but service was super, staff was so friendly and came across as genuine, food was great we had the Sunday roast and chocolate fondant, Great selection of drinks - Gins and beers for us :) great Sunday out
Another lovely meal at the Salty Dog. Great ambience with lovely service and great food. Would be good to see a few menu changes over the next few months or perhaps a wider choice of specials. Very nice place to idle away the time.
Have been here before and was excited to return but don't think I'll be back. service was poor and they weren't particularly busy. Food was disappointing mine was no where near what was described on the menu.
Excellent service and relaxed atmosphere. Food of the highest quality and well presented. Finished our evening outside over looking harbour with delicious dessert cocktails. Will definitely be back. 5 stars!
Our food was lovely! And huge plates, we couldn’t finish it all.
Cocktails were delicious and the wine list was also good.
The atmosphere was really exciting before the Snowpatrol concert. You even had Snowpatrol playing in the pub which was really nice.
We were running late for our table but when I called to push the table back a bit you were very accommodating.
We can’t wait to come back the next time we are in Belfast!
Decidedly average. Appears fancy but pretty poor overall.
We booked in for breakfast and it was a huge disappointment.
The staff were, at best, surly and, at worst rude. There were no clear instructions given as to how breakfast (and, in particular, the buffet table) worked and when we asked we were treated like idiots.
The food was simply average. The french bread ‘tasted like a chip shop’ according to my children. I went for the Wee Ulster Fry. It was OK but all very pretentious with small pieces of soda and potato bread.
It was best summarised by a fancy milk jug made in the shape of a milk carton - it looked fabulous but when you went to pour it just trickled milk all over the table.
Food amazing r wee shitzu mitz loved it treats for the dogs brilliant restaurant thank u guys
Very good friendly waiting staff and nice setting but food let it down. Went for lunch to celebrate my daughter's 21st birthday. It took a long time for food to come even though not really busy. We had to send 2 meals out of 4 back and reorder. Took so long that the others had finished their meal before the reordered food arrived. We were given coffee on the house but by then the experience was spoilt.
I hadn't been to the Salty Dog for a year or so and thought that I would give it a try again. The restaurant was very busy and quite noisy. The menu has a good range of food to suit most tastes. The staff were under pressure so the service was strained and the staff appeared distracted. The food was tasty but not exceptional. All in all the experience was ok but not somewhere I would rush back to.
Wonderful dog friendly restaurant. Service was fantastic and the food was absolutely delicious too!
