The Sawmills Freehouse is a Devonian take on the American Smokehouse, offering mouthwatering chicken wings and brisket alongside killer burgers and hearty pub classics.
We use the most local ingredients we can find, including Exmoor beef that travels less than 20 miles from farm to fork!

Fantastic food and excellent setting. Sat right by fire which was wonderful. Love coming to this place.. shame we will have to wait another 4 weeks.
Excellent as usual 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
AMAZING food! Would recommend to anyone in the area!
Really enjoyed our meal and was very promptly served by your very helpful and polite staff.
Had great food on 17th October. Service was good.
Only complaints were that there was mushrooms in the Steak Pie and this wasn't advertised and the Exmoor Brisket with Brioche is served in a plastic 'basket'. It tastes great but is very 'saucy' and the sauce leaks out through the side holes which makes a mess and it is served on a paper liner under the brioche bun which gets soggy and you tend to eat the paper with the bun.
Taste though of all the food was great and they were generous with the kids portions. Atmosphere was great. Would come again.
I always enjoy coming to the sawmills.
Unfortunately this time the staff were really unhelpful. It was table service only, but it proved nearly impossible to attract a member of staff to take an order. Also there were no staff walking around, they seemed to spend most of their time behind the bar which was not particularly helpful.
Well organised re covid distancing and enjoyed high standard meal.
Very nice pub, helpful staff and excellent food. Only complaint was the place was full of dogs and their inconsiderate owners. After finishing their meal the table opposite walked out and returned with two Dalmatians which were a nuisance. I now understand why they didn't want the dogs at their table whilst they were eating. I think we were the only table without a dog, so I can understand why the pub allows them . Perhaps a dog free area could be put aside.
Having dined at The Sawmills many times over the years, this is the first time we have been since the start of the Covid pandemic.
The day in question was very warm and we were able to sit at an outside table. This quickly allayed any fears we had.
The staff were very attentive and we were in no way hurried at any time.
Having "taken the plunge" we will certainly be looking to repeat the experience soon.
Thank you to your staff.
Our evening was really great.
All the staff were happy and helpful and on top of Covid preparations.
The food was delicious and we had a thoroughly good evening.
As usual...our favourite pub!!
We ordered Nachos, must have been the best I’ve eaten and followed with the brisket which was amazing!
We felt comfortable with the social distancing and great attentive service. We thoroughly enjoyed our evening.
We have been previous years and found the quality of food not as good on this visit. We had chicken wings as a starter and some were stone cold, this was rectified straight away and apologies were made. I ordered the steak and ale pie and asked if it was home made as stated on the menu, I was told yes and it was served with a selection of veg. It was served with cabbage and chips and was most certainly a supermarket bought pie which was actually steak and mushroom. I hope things improve next year.
Our party of 6 mostly enjoyed the food apart from not many gluten free options for 1 member. Would definitely go again. Drinks a bit pricey but overall we enjoyed it.
Our food arrived hot and there was plenty of it.
The staff were very helpful when my tea arrived with no milk and there wasn't enough water for the tea leaves to stand in.
We all enjoyed our meals and would return in the future.
Please do not give me my meal in a basket with paper at the bottom Coleslaw all leaking out. Put it in a plate!
The food was amazing. So worth the money! One of the best roasts I’ve ever had out. We was served by a gentleman called Theo, who was amazing, the drinks he recommended was spot on what we like. Thank you Theo for your friendly and prompt service! Would be coming back here! Would recommend the food and service here to anyone!
The service was great and the food excellent. Would highly recommend.
Only issue which is most venues at present was that it was cold
Amazing Sunday roast. Best we've had. Staff very welcoming. Beautiful restaurant, well set out. Beautiful open fire. Will certainly return.
Lovely Sunday roast beef with all the trimmings and plenty of veg for £12.95, excellent food and value
The location is stunning and the pub layout is open and friendly. Staff were efficient and the food outstanding. We opted for the Sunday Roast and it’s the best we’ve had ever, food was hot, great choice of vegetables, nice accompaniments and the gravy was excellent. Will defiantly visit again
Felt the food was overpriced, portion size was fair
This was a lovely pub in a very picturesque setting. The staff were very helpful and had a lovely ambience. Apparently the pint of tribute was amazing! My only criticism and I guess it is because of covid there was a restricted menu which was a shame but totally understandable. We would definitely recommend
Our group of 5 thoroughly enjoyed our meals. The young manager was absolutely excellent, very informative without being pushy, attentive and welcoming as was the young girl who greeted us upon our arrival. If we’re ever near Berrynarbor again we will most definitely be back. Keep up the good service👍😀
The sawmill used to be my husband and my favourite restaurant. We recommend it to everyone. Sadly I know Covid has taken its toll on all businesses but the new menu was disappointing with little choice. There used to be wonderful choices and excellently prepared food. My husband had a burger and it was poor quality with plastic Mac Donald’s cheese on. Very poor. My nachos were as good as normal so no complaints there. I will not be returning and this is sad as we used to go regularly before lockdown. Come on Sawmill get the standard back!!!! We miss you
Very well organised good food good service very clean
Lovely stop for a late lunch whilst on holiday . Shared Nachos (delicious) and chocolate brownie to die for. Staff friendly and efficient and all seemed well thought out for the current climate regarding Covid 19. Would definitely eat there again if we were in the area
my sister and I had a very good lunch. the food was good as was the service. Would recommend for pub food.
Staff were friendly and professional, information about Covid-19 restrictions was clear and the food was excellent.
Everything was amazing the staff the food the surroundings even in this current situation couldn’t fault anything
Welcoming friendly staff lovely food COVID-19 adhered too
Service was great and the food was excellent - lovely atmosphere created by the staff which isn't easy given the current pandemic.
The food tasted great and presentation, service and price was above par, if the food was hotter!..... then it would have been a hole in one!!
Had the roast brisket which just melted in your mouth it was that tender, was also very good value for money.
Very nice venue, well organised and the food was excellent.
This was the second time we have eaten here and food and service was amazing both times, can only imagine how great it was before COVID-19
Thank you for a lovely evening. This was our first visit to Sawmill and we hope to be using it alot next year. Very accommodating for a wheelchair with straight leg so thank you.
No large bottle of Prosecco so had three small bottles making it very expensive!!
Disappointed that everything seemed to come with BREAD??
No fish menu?
Asked for mushrooms instead of a piece of bread on my meal and was
Told mmmm not sure we can do that?? And got charged £1 extra!!
Dint mi d paying but as was as if I was asking for a fillet steak in place of a burger!!!!
Was disappointed as I was recommended to go there by a friend..
won’t be going back I’m afraid..
No problem with staff though 👍
Laid back atmosphere, friendly staff and lovely food, not too expensive for what we got. Would recommend to couples, families and groups alike.
Disappointed; 1 limited menu not the normal. 2. Bill was £47. £3 too little tip so gave £60. Offered £3 change. Either I can't count or the staff can't. I would probably have given £8 tip or maybe £13 but my choice. I didn't say anything - feeling generous.
