About The Senate
At the Senate, we pride ourselves on using fresh, seasonal, quality produce to uniquely craft a menu filled with homemade recipes and exciting dishes. We love the combination of bringing together family and friends with good food and drink. For early risers we have a refined but tasteful breakfast menu. Followed by a Lunch and Evening menu that extends to a variety sharers and bigger bistro dishes. With a small but well-constructed wine list to compliment every dish and a refined cocktail list to suit all tastes. We are a small team at the Senate, and all believe in a relaxed, friendly, atmosphere with great service.

The Senate Ratings and Reviews
My first visit which was for a friends birthday lunch. Had a lovely table by the window. Staff were very friendly and attentive. The set lunch menu was really good value and delicious. We managed to leave some bags but they rang me as soon as they realised which We really appreciated. Will definitely return. Thank you!
First visit to Senate on a warm balmy evening. We sat outside, people watched and ate comfortably. Service was attentive, friendly and efficient. Menu offered wide selection. We had chicken burger and prawn starter. Prices were reasonable. Worth going again though not sure what it would be like inside.
Great atmosphere with a fantastic view. We ended up ordering far too much food as we couldn't decide between all the choices.
Service was great. The right amount of attention, so that I could have a long catch-up with a friend while nibbling food slowly and at the same time whenever I needed to order something else there was always someone to hand.
Will absolutely be returning.
The three of us had a really great late evening meal. The Chilli Prawns are outstanding, and we all enjoyed the food including fish cake (acutally tasted of fish unlike others) and chicken escallop. Very friendly service. Good house wine (Malbec). A really central Cambridge location with great views. Highly recommended.
Loved It!! We booked in for lunch, which was lovely, fresh & tasty, so much so we reserved a table for that evening. This is a great little bistro offering some really good homecooked food. The staff were really on the ball and helpful, and to round it off, probably the best view in town. Would diffinatley recommend this one.
Very good value 3-course lunchtime menu and nicely presented food, all very tasty. Heartily recommend the chocolate mousse which is 'proper' and not the usual pseudo chocolate mousse. Lovely surprise from the first mouthful and just the right amount. Very happy with our choice and would recommend. Not quite the upmarket restaurant I expected from the website, but pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food and the excellent service.
I booked a table for 2.15pm as I was meeting a friend to have lunch. We arrived on time and hungry! We were met by a friendly young lady and were able to choose our seating as the place was quiet, the usual lunchtime tourist had already gone. We chose our meals and drink and only waited a few minutes before it was served. My friend had Chicken Caesar salad while I had the Smoked Trout salad, both meals were fresh and delicious, absolutely spot on. We stayed longer than planned as it was so nice to be able to talk without raising our voices.
The service was quick but we didn't feel rushed at all. Overall a really nice place to be.
This restaurant has a beautiful view across to Kings college and opposite a very noisy(bells) but beautiful church. The food was good, the atmosphere was lovely, and the facilities are well taken care of. My Australian friends liked it. I would definitely go back.
First time at this newish restaurant, and we had a really nice meal. Still family run; we were told that the owner is the son of the previous owner of "Aunty's".
Chorizo and Halloumi starters were both delicious, and it was hard to choose from a tempting range on the menu.
We would definitely return.
Nice food and decor was authentic and bistro like which gave it a continental feel x
It Had nice romantic ambience about it .
Staff was friendly and food came up in good time x
Recommend the calamari rings and chorizo red wine starter x for main the beef cheek was good also x
Would definitely go back x
Reasonabley priced as well x
Lovely restaurant, staff very efficient and friendly. Comfortable surrounds and relaxing atmosphere. Only one problem, the main course (pressed belly pork) could have been more tender. We should have said at the time but didn't want to spoil the evening with a complaint. We will be back.
We dined off the pre-theatre menu and just managed to fit in two courses. The food was of good quality, unfortunately two of us chose the Gnocchi with mushrooms in a cream and red pesto sauce, which was far too rich to be enjoyable. We thought the wine was expensive for the quality but it's been a while since we've dined out in central Cambridge. The staff were friendly and efficient and the atmosphere pleasant compared to many of the alternatives nearby. The stairs down to the toilets are very steep and awkward.
The food and service were good, but not exceptional and so the relatively high price didn't feel to be great value for money. There was nothing wrong with our orders (prawns/cheese starters and steak and lamb mains) but I think you can eat just as well at a lower price in Cambridge. The interior is quite nice and rustic, but it still carries the feel of a café, rather than a bistro.
I hate to leave bad reviews but since I am influenced in choosing restaurants by what I hope are honest reviews by others, I feel that I must do the same.
We ate a mid-evening meal on a Thursday.
Portion size was almost perversely variable across our group from the very large beef cheek dish ordered by one of us to my own literally 2/3 mouthful portion of monkfish on a bed of similarly meagre mash which looked like it had just been slopped on the plate. The fish was also slightly undercooked. On reflection I should have raised the tiny amount of fish provided for £17 but did not. The cheeseboard did not suffer from the (all too frequently encountered) problem of under-ripeness but rather presented tiny and tired/over offcuts of cheese for £11 or £12. I like vegetables to be al dente but side dishes of carrots and broccoli (ordered to supplement some of the distinctly undersized maincourses) were undercooked and hard to bite through.
Finally, I think that these premises used to be a teashop or café and the problem is that it still looks and feels like that, including a door which did not close easily and was constantly letting in the cold draught from outside.
The staff were pretty good but could not mitigate what was generally a disappointing and disproportionately expensive evening.
