My wife and I spend on our last day in Edinburgh and found this is the oldest pub in Edinburgh and decided to eat here. Their service are wonderful. However it takes longer to wait for someone to come and check on us. Overall is amazing and rich experience. :)
Lovely place, great service and excellent food. Even though we had to wait until our table was ready the staff was very helpful. Would definitely recommend.
We arrived early September and it was evident wait staff were weary from tourists. Energy was low; smiles and friendliness were lacking. Very robotic in going through the necessary motions. However, after seeing how many international tour busses and thousands of people visit this city daily, I can understand their tired dispositions. The food was excellent, as well as the ambiance.
Great place to eat outside the Royal Mile. On our way to Sheep’s Heid the view of Arthur’s Seat was spectacular. Everything about the restaurant was great; the ambiance, food and service. All the entrees looked delicious! My family ordered each one so we can all try a bite. I would definitely dine here again.
This is a special place but we think sitting downstairs is critical. We were seated upstairs with large birthday party and found both food and atmosphere disappointing
The sheips heid was very good the booking through open table not good. The booking did not go through and we did not get our table and had to rebook
This 600 year old establishment has been updated but retains its sense of history. It has had a ten-pin (skittles) bowling alley since the time of James VI.
Queen Eliz dropped 'round for a pub meal in 2016! (Her palace is just down the road)
Great Sunday Roast!
Brought my partner there as a special outing because it was recommended. I am here performing in the Royale Edinburgh Military Tattoo. I made reservations for two at 4:30. We were seated and waited and waited. Finally I had to flag down a server to ask if we could please place our order. Then after appetizer and drink were served we waited for 40 minutes and no food came. I had to leave the table again to find a server (who were socializing behind the bar) to ask where our food was. He asked me what I ordered and then had a shocked expression on his face. Apparently he forgot to put the order in. He came back from the kitchen and said it would be a few minutes. He obviously lied about placing our order and we had to leave without having eaten dinner because I had a performance to get to. Horrible experience. Very poor waitstaff.
Always happy to go to the Sheep Heid Inn for an authentic Sunday lunch. The place is cosy but not stuffy and the food / drinks never disappoint.
I often meet my friend here as it is between our homes and it never disappoints. Great menu. Service is good though sometimes the team are a bit harassed if it's busy.
Very small portions, of average quality. Staff were good, but woefully understaffed.
We were slightly disappointed with our visit to this recommended pub. We were shown to a quiet corner location and then no-one came to bring us menus or offer drinks for about 10mins - my husband went up to the bar in the end. The waitress we had was a very friendly, but the place was busy and so her time was split with many tables to serve. The food was ok and the pub itself was pleasant but at the end of our evening, we asked for them to order us a taxi and then had to wait 45 mins for it to arrive (we were promised 10-15mins and saw others come and go with their passengers so we were sure we had been forgotten once again.)
Definitely try to get a table on the ground floor- the upstairs dining room is lacking character and could be in any IBIS hotel restaurant. I expected the food to be much better given its reputation as a solid village pub . Our Sunday roast on the small side and was completely missing honey-glazed carrots and parsnips. Service was friendly. Drinks were a bit on the pricey side.
This place is trading on its old name. Staff non existent at times who seemed to disappear from time to time. I waited five minutes at a bar before a member of staff turned up. The food was mediocre and we were sat in a corner that was so dark I could hardly see that I was eating. We left without deserts or coffees. Old tired toilets too. Not in a great hurry to go back and such s shame because if it was run correctly it could be a gem.
We have been dropping in to this pub for years and love it. It's got incredibly busy recently so it's best to book whereas we used to just drop in. They managed how busy they were really well but it did make the time for our food to arrive slightly longer.
I’ve eaten at the sheeps Heidi several times and always enjoyed it. However, this time was a huge disappointment. Firstly our online booking wasn’t showing on their system despite me having a confirmation. Luckily they were able to accommodate us after some confusion. There was a long delay for service and the meals when they arrived were all cold. None of the plates were heated and the drinks we had ordered had to be requested several times. This meant that half the meal was eaten before the wine arrived. The food itself was adequate. Disappointing.
What a disappointment! This was our Favourite Pub since the 1960s but it has really gone downhill. Poor Service by bored, inattentive, badly spoken staff, uncooked food. We used to enjoy an excellent Xmas meal here every year but we won't be back.Judging by the empty tables others have deserted what was once among the bestPubs in Edinburgh. Pity
Unfortunately this was my worst experience of The Sheep Heid Inn to date. The place was pretty empty and cold when we entered. The table felt like we were part of a corridor (people passing to the skittles and kept knocking the wine holder) - i did ask to move but was told that they were fully booked however by the time we left the dining room it was still over half empty. However they did locate a heater to help with the cold. The food was ok, the scallops we had were lovely the rest was average. Hoping that the booking I have over Christmas is more enjoyable...
A great place to visit when visiting Edinburgh. We’ve taken friends from overseas there, and love its character. As well as the excellent & varied menu; will require many more trips for us to eat our way through it. Shame!
We all really enjoyed our family meal here.
Staff were friendly & the food excellent
A quaint pub retaurant is said to be the oldest in Scotland. The servce as good especially considerin a table of 20 next to us! The meal was well prepared. We had the duck parfait as starter, the sea bass and the lobster cake as mains. They were excellent and worth a rating of 5.
However the restaurant is not within walking distance and no service by bus. It took 45 min to get a taxi and then because some other patrons arrived. The taxi called by the restaurant never came. I am not sure that the restaurant is worth the effort despite the other positives
Cosy Gastropub with good staples on the menu. Nothing wildly exciting, but what there was was dependable and very acceptable. The car park is quite small so if this is full accessibility might be an issue for anybody with mobility problems.
Arrived on time for our early dinner booking to be told they did not have our reservation.I thought no problem reserved over open table had off course the proof of the pudding with a confirmation E-mail.Showed it to him only to be told no we don't have it !its Saturday Eve. Not easy to get another table without going into Edin. City centre which we really did not want to do .
We suggested that as he could read our e-mail he should honour us a table ,he said he would organise a table in the bar but this just was not suitable as it is a cramped dark bar and not what we wanted for a Saturday evening.
Read some other reviews and mention of this same problem has occurred also the long wait on food .
We have been here before and know this problem but as we are not robots this can happen .After this problem we were speechless and could not believe what happened. This time we will not return and we are no local so it's not a one of visit .
Amazed to read some recent "less than average" reviews about what is one of Edinburgh's best traditional pubs. Excellent food, polite and friendly staff and a fabulous atmosphere.
The fact that you need to book a table in advance for a pub in Duddingston (rather than the City Centre) is telling....
My friend and I visited here for dinner and a catch up. My friend ordered chicken with sweet potato fries but they brought normal fries accidentally. This wasn't rectified until we had almost finished our meal and we were charged for all the fries. Disappointing considering the prices. I didn't enjoy the taste of the fish cakes but I am aware that is just personal preference. With so much choice in Edinburgh I wouldn't return here.
This outstanding gastro pub, excellent food, good service, great drinks never fails to deliver. The table was perfect, the main was delicious and the chocolate bomb dessert was both theatrical and delicious. I just wish I lived closer, I'd be here every week. A country pub only 2 miles from the city center.
Visiting from Canada... 12 GPB cab from New Town was worth it. It was a great part of our Edinburgh experience.
We had fish and chips which was nothing out of the ordinary.
Great food, service & atmosphere! Very cozy place!
Zero hospitality, same as a chain hotel really. Service was very poor,
Almost non-existent. Would NOT recommend this place.
Very disappointing. Had looked forward to going to the Sheep's Heid for ages. Decided to go with visiting friends. Our starter was really quite inedible. Pizzette with rocket but came with no rocket and was undercooked and soggy. Dough balls that were undercooked, solid and really inedible too. My main of steak, mushroom and ale pie had a solid pastry case, 2 pieces of steak, one mushroom and a lot of gravy. Had complained about dough balls but did not keep complaining as visiting friends were paying as a treat. Waiter said we didn't need to pay for dough balls but they were on our bill till we challenged it. I do have to say that the staff were very nice but nothing they could say or do could make up for the very poor quality food. Very disappointed. Would not recommend and will not be back.
