The Ship Inn
Went for a drink in the day. Returned later for a meal. The steak was THE tastiest I have ever had in my life and the peppercorn gravy was amazing too. Rest of the food was great, so too the wine and one barman in particular was great. However, a female waiting staff last thing in the evening member was disinterested and often forgot us.
Excellent food marred by terrible service. I am a long time customer and haven't seen such poor service.
Booked for late Sunday lunch. Service was slow, they brought our roast lunch but hadn’t brought our starter, the waitress said she’d get it but we said there was no point. The roast beef was good quality but the meal was not hot. The pork was ok but again not hot. Ordered pudding but asked for vanilla ice cream not the banana as on the menu but the waiter said it had changed to vanilla anyway as the banana was finished. When it arrived it was salted caramel I think, but was very nice. Altogether not bad enough to complain, but wouldn’t recommend certainly for Sunday lunch.
The menu on open table was completely different then the one at the restaurant. The service was marginal. We left after the appetizers because we were not happy.
We had previously eaten in The Ship, when we recommended that our friends join us for Sunday lunch. This was the time when Danny Boland was playing in there as part of the Jazz Festival weekend. We had a table in a good location in the restaurant. Service was ok, food was ok, atmosphere was good and so was music. Only observation was, although it was a really hot weekend, The Ship did not have any windows open in the pub or restaurant. Otherwise, we had a good time and meal.

I’ve enjoyed lunch at the ship several times and on this occasion took my elderly mother along, the staff are excellent, service very good, my favourites of mussels and king prawns were out of stock so I missed the 3 small plate deal I usually have.My Mother enjoyed her haddock and chips, my wife chose a lamb roast dinner which was very good but not hot enough for her liking. My fantail prawns with chips were ok.
I shall return again, hopefully the favourites on the menu will be restored.
lient Service very poor. Food very slow coming but was good when it did arrive. We ordered prawns for a shared starter but arrived as mussels and waitress reluctantly said she would get some (no offer that they would be free of charge) and we were told that our friend had order the mussels. We were sitting there when she ordered them! Dessert menu was eventually brought to the table and we ordered salted caramel icecream but when it arrived it was banana ice cream. Service staff very definitely ignoring us (clearing up at bar which was about 3 metres from where we were sitting) when we tried to catch someone to order coffee (this was about 9.30 by now - table booked for 7.15pm). Funnily enough able to bring the bill very quickly though. Sort your staff out Ship owners as my sisters may live elsewhere but I live in the area and will not be able to recommend you.
Nice ambience and pleasant staff. Mismatched furniture which seems to be trend these days.
Asked for steak to be well done and was told only medium rare possible so changed to some other choice.
Tea and dessert were forgotten though not busy. Staff were apologetic but crumble only lukewarm as a result.
Rather restricted menu but mains were well cooked and presented.
Had Sunday roast, average quality, expensive and nothing special.

The staff came across a little unprofessional at times, forgetting drinks & offering the wrong meals (despite them being right they thought they were something else). The food was good & the staff were pleasant, so it didn’t put us off eating there again.
Good location, true pub atmosphere, very friendly good service and small plates provide good choices.

I was very disappointed as I was expecting more from Hush Heath. Really poor service. We had to repeatedly ask for drinks and the bill. Food was distinctly average. I wanted to enjoy this more as the pub is a beautiful building in a great location

It was very busy and the wait was quite long. Not all of us found the food as delicious as the menu description.
Booked Sunday lunch for 2.30pm arrived about early but still had to wait a long time for the meal. Roast lamb very fatty, roast potatoes soaked in gravy and soft, not much veg. Not very good.
Dog friendly throughout which was very important to us. Food was lovely but we were the only table not offered menus or service. We used our phones to peruse the menu and ordered at the bar.
Lovely food, good service. We pre warned we’d have dogs with us and we were given a lovely table in a corner with dog water waiting for our arrival. We will definitely visit again.

Have been a couple of times and love the ambiance, but the menu doesn’t seem to change much.

Lovely place, there were 2 of us and our dog and we were welcomed by all. We had a wonderful afternoon. I had the roast which was delicious, my husband had the burger which was very big but slightly dry. We would recommend
The environment is lovely, the food is limited but excellent. One of our burgers was not up to standard, so unprompted, staff made a new one and took it off the bill. Ambience was good as it was reasonably full as I would expect and Harveys is back!
Really like The Ship Inn in Rye. The staff were friendly and funny, and I was offered a wine to try before I committed to ordering. I'd also recommend the Skye's English White Wine from the Hush Heath Estate!
Sadly the fire wasn't lit in the pub that evening, had been a warm March day. Otherwise, the atmosphere is cosy, friendly and casual.
We had a beautiful meal with family on Saturday night. The food was delicious, the service was great and the atmosphere was lively with lots of diners and pub goers. Will certainly go back. Well done !
We have been going to the shop for sometime, the food was great, it was subday lunch, the service was slow and the front fmdoor was left open, it was a February afternoon and the breeze wasn’t welcome.
I booked this restaurant over 5 weeks ago for a party of 6 and stated in the Special Requirements of the booking form that: “We are here for Rye Bay Scallop week and want to have the scallop menu.“
We chose the Ship Inn from the many restaurants serving scallops in Rye because of previous good experience with other locations in the Hush Heath Estate; many beers at St Bart’s Brewery, various meals at The Goudhurst Inn and a Vineyard Tour & lunch to celebrate the opening of a new visitor centre. Sadly, the good service and food has not made it down to Rye and the Ship Inn.
I confirmed our reservation the day before our arrival. We hoped to make a day of our visit and lunch, and even travelled by train from Tonbridge so we wouldn’t need to worry about driving, We visited 3 restaurant/bars before arriving at the Ship Inn and were upset that we were not able to try their scallop menu’s, as each looked better than the last but built our expectation for the lunch yet to come.
On arrival at the Ship Inn, we were seated at our table and handed menu’s by a smiling waitress who informed us they had run out of scallops and even mussels. When I explained that we booked the scallop menu almost 6 weeks ago, we were told that they had been very busy and had sold out, with the same happening the previous day – incredible! There were empty tables in the restaurant, so for 13:30 on a Sunday we don’t believe that equals busy.
We decided we would rather eat fish and chips in the street rather than spend any money at the Ship Inn. Needless to say, they have done a dis-service to Rye, and we shall not be returning. Shambles!
Arrived on the first day of the Scallop Festival to be told that they had run out of scallops (not a problem we subsequently encountered in any other restaurant in Rye).
We should have left at that point but thought getting a table for five people in another restaurant might be difficult. In hindsight this was a big mistake.
The emphasis for the food is obviously not quality, pretty much all the menu was produced from frozen. Three of our party opted for the fish and chips (frozen haddock) which was not very well cooked to the point where most of it was left, my partner had mussels, which were gritty, cold and came in a completely tasteless sauce (although the grit might have indicated that they weren't frozen). In fairness, I had opted for a vegetarian dish, linguine with courgette, which was reasonable.
The restaurant was busy, but we still had an extremely long wait (> 30 minutes) for each course.
I never mind waiting for good food, but what was presented was exceptionally disappointing.
The food coupled with some fearsome prices for bang average wine made for a pretty miserable evening that everyone couldn't wait to end.
We have stayed and eaten at The Ship on many occasions in the past and it has always been very good. Since it has been taken over and revamped it is a shadow of it's former self. We will obviously not evr be returning.
Rye has several great restaurants, if you prefer fresh food, try these, and avoid The Ship like the plague.
Went to the pub on an evening during the scallop festival. We were seated at our reserved table - good news since it was a busy weekend! Unfortunately they didn't have any scallops (during the scallop festival!) and the service was very slow.
We have been here three times before and had a great memorable time. This February it just didn’t measure up. Almost half the food was unavailable which was a shame. My vegetarian wife had the only remaining veg dish - pasta. It was v bland and inferior to something we would make at home. The starters were cold. Maybe it was just an off day. We may give it another try as it’s a lovely pub and we like Rye but £82 was not well spent.
Quality of food was appalling for the price. Extremely disappointing. We went for dinner on a Saturday evening. Both the food and atmosphere felt like that of a very cheap chain.
Excellent Sunday lunch, lovely warm open fire with a perfect pint of Harveys, followed a wonderful Sticky Toffee Pudding.
The ship is a reliably excellent option when in Rye. It has a casual, welcoming, informal atmosphere & ambience while also having a tempting menu full of tasty options and excellent service. I look forward to returning on my next trip to Rye.
