Food was usual pub fair. It was a cold day and the room was cold but the staff couldn't start the fire because they had no logs. I asked for the radiator in the room to be put on and they didn't do this either.
The Ship goes from strength to strength - after a slightly dodgy start after lockdown it's rapidly becoming a favourite. This was my fourth meal there in the past couple of months - opted for the cod loin which came with a creamy cous cous sauce and was perfectly cooked. Lovely waitstaff who are helpful and friendly.
The food was amazing, very friendly and welcoming staff. It was a very good choice 👍🏻
Lovely decor and set up with the Christmas lights and fire and we had a nice table by the window.
Staff were friendly but service hit and miss and we were a bit disappointed by staff swearing loudly in conversation next to two tables with young children.
Roast pork v disappointing, one small slice that was 80% fat, and sadly the roast potatoes tasted reheated. Adult three scoop ice cream came as two scoops (this was rectified when prompted). Would have preferred music rather than a radio station playing - hearing adverts and news bulletins etc takes away from the atmosphere! Just a real shame as we so wanted to love it, as we visit Rye regularly.
New years eve food was average not their best , service fantastic , wine with the meal included was a good choice . Food could have been beter for the price , a bit tasteless . Overall a good night
We made a late booking for a table of 4 plus a baby. After a short phone call we was fitted in to their busy schedule which was impressive to start with. We had a push chair and there was plenty of space to bring it in as the tables for food were nicely spread out so that you could eat and make conversation without someone else hearing you. The food was really good, personally I head the fish and chips and it is was melt in the mouth. The price was good for the quality of the food. We had enough contact from our server to ensure we was well looked after. Once we had finished, we were not rushed out the door and had enough time to relax after our meal. Overall I would visit here again next time I'm down this way.
Tasty food, a lovely relaxed atmosphere and friendly staff
The log fire was a real treat on a cold wet Christmas Eve which gave a cosy feel. We had oysters to start which were delicious this was followed by cod loin with a cauliflower veloute and sides of rosemary chips and hispy cabbage. This was accompanied by a nice cold Chablis….. all in all it was a lovely evening with great food and excellent service.
A warm and hospitable pub for a lovely cosy lunch. Great friendly service, the waiter couldn't do more to make us feel at home. He also welcomed our two dogs with biscuits and water!
Made a booking for a table for 2 a week in advance for a celebration and then confirmed the booking (via OpenTable) the day before arrival. On arriving told that they had no fish which meant that half their menu was no longer available this was not a good start. As this was a special occasion we decided to still eat here rather than try to find somewhere else - big mistake. Ordered the starters which were okay and a vegetarian main (soufflé with Sussex Blue cheese) together with a venison main. Halfway through the starter told that the vegetarian main was not available and would we like to order the vegetarian burger instead and also that the red wine we wanted was not available either. Managed to cobble together some semblance of a main meal for the vegetarian option by combining a selection of starters and chips (£5) and although the venison was reasonable it had been overcooked in places. The waiting staff did try their best to manage the situation and this is not a criticism of them but of the inability of the management / owners to ensure that these sort of problems do not occur. We are all being urged to honour bookings during the Covid-19 pandemic but this is also a two-way street and we would have thought the courtesy of an email giving us the option to find somewhere else might have been extended. Needless to say we will not be returning or recommending this establishment to anyone based on our experience.
Lovely food, amazingly polite n friendly staff. Could not find fault with anyhing
Fantastic staff, delicious food and a really warm cosy pub. Can't wait to go back.
Nice cosy ambience with a real fire and friendly staff.
Such a cosy pub, fantastic staff and delicious food - absolute gem.
I took my family for Sunday lunch. The Ship Inn has a lovely, rustic atmosphere with excellent service and decent food.
Top notch food. Lovely log fire. Our dog made welcome. Attentive waiting staff. Enjoyed our visit very much 🙂
Enjoyed a lovely meal with friends in this now once again pub. Very good menu, crab, skate, pig cheeks and scallop 'pie' popular, the soufflé was sold out quite early! Lovely friendly staff.
Wonderful old pub in Rye- very atmospheric. Our cheese soufflés were delicious, but we thought the accompanying salad was very meagre, just a few green leaves. The bread was no doubt made in Rye, but ordinary old white flannel- we had been expecting more rustic bread made from rye- maybe a misunderstanding!! Desserts acceptable. Fabulous open fire but possibly a blocked flue? We went home stinking like kippers!
Lovely and cosy with a roaring fire and fairy lights
We could not fault anything at all here. The staff were amazing and very informative. We will definitely come back here again.
Underwhelming: limited menu (3 of 5 main meals unavailable), limited non-wine drinks choice, mixed service, not all main meal elements hot, could have got the same for £15 a head less.
Food was ok we had roast would have been nice to have chicken option also need extra gravy but couldn’t get attention and no one came over to ask if food was ok, card reader wasn’t working so my partner had to try and find a lonely atm somewhere to get cash and bring it back so we could leave it inconvenient overall it was a nice place and food was pretty good
Staff friendly and although the food was nice the menu is very limited. The location is good and the feel of the pub very nice.
Enjoyed two visits here whilst staying in Winchelsea. It’s nice.
A lovely, friendly, cozy pub, most importantly they welcome dogs!
We had the most delicious fish & chips. We can’t wait to return
Food was amazing, everything we had was stunning and the service was great too
Good food excellent wine great service from the bar manager
Excellent evening meal. Service very good with friendly staff. Food really tasty and good value. Recommend
Its good, but its always the little things that make a difference, it was a first dining visit, so, the menu was good, however we were asked about 5 times by different staff whether we ready, so there is no waiter ownership of a set of tables, which can be annoying although does mean you are not forgotten, we ordered some wine and their 50ml trio tasting of sparkling board, which when it arrived was very good however it was forgotten and we had to ask for it again and then it arrived too late to have with the starters which was the idea as we had their scallop pie. We had some lovely comfortable wrap around leather chairs, but were next to the fireplace, no fire was lit but it needs a good clean as my shirt smelt of cinders/smoke which wasn't pleasant. The food however was good no complaints there, this isn't standard pub grub it was more 4* hotel standard. So a little work needed on the service and attention and it would be a s good as you can get.
Nice room very good and friendly service tasty food and wine
Only the truffles at end were disappointing
Good fresh food. The fish and chips were delicious- soft delicate fish in a crunchy beer batter and chunky skin on chips. Good service throught and reasonably priced.
We went to the ship for a Sunday roast while away for the weekend- it was delicious food - very reasonably priced as all looked homemade and their own wines are Devine I tried all 3-small 125ml of each wine.
Only thing I’d say is that once our meal was bought out to us they didn’t return so we had to get up and ask a staff member as we were missing a couple of items which was quickly sorted but would have been nice if they popped back after 5 minutes just to ask if we have everything and ask if all was ok with the food.
Will definitely return if we return back to Rye
Really lovely gastro pub really close to the town centre. Lovely decor but a very limited vegan menu BUT they do cook the food very well. Probably the most delicious in-house rye bread I've ever tasted...I could've just eaten a whole plate of that.
All 3 of us had fish and chips and did not enjoy it. The fish was OK but the batter was not. It was too thick. The chips were not really chips. The pea ketchup was like a spoonfull of pea soup.
Staff very friendly and courteous, good service all round
Went for Sunday lunch, food was slow and came out cold despite tables being less than half full. Staff more interested in chatting at the bar to locals than serving customers.
Menu offered 2 courses for £22 but was then told it wouldn’t be the case as many dishes were actually excluded, very unclear, plain false advertising.
Turned up but they had forgotten our booking, stuck us in a dark corner by the noisy end of the bar. Had to go ask for drinks and menus as they forgot about us and after waiting 40 mins with no service we left, so can't comment on food....
Wonderful service in a traditional 16th century pub with possibly the most amazing steak I have ever had - shown on the menu as "rib eye", though it is actually the equivalent of butcher's cut.
Much nicer menu than previous visit. We enjoyed the food. Service a bit slow.
Excellent meal in a nice pub atmosphere. Very dog friendly. Staff were great too. Recommended
