The Stag & Huntsman
Nestled into the Chiltern Hills, between Henley and Marlow and just up from the River Thames, Hambleden can only be described as quintessentially English.
Benefiting from the care of the Culden Faw Estate and the protection of The National Trust, the village is one that time forgot, with few changes over the last century.
The Stag and Huntsman, lovingly restored by The Estate under the auspices of heritage architecture, Ptolemy Dean, maintains the old world charm of a Country Inn. With a focus towards the local community - Hambleden and the local residents - myriad of small and cosy drinking and eating spaces within the Inn, the nine letting bedrooms and the pretty garden also provide a resting place and watering hole for those who travel further distances to the village.
This is the 3rd time I have been to this pub/restaurant and on each occasions people have left without eating because the service was so slow! This Sunday people had booked and come into the pub and when they went to order food they were told the kitchen was closed it was clear from where we were sitting that there was a huge amount of friction between members of staff and it became uncomfortable sitting there having to overhear everything that was going on .... those that complained that they hadn't been told the kitchen was closed were then found food !!! How could they run out of food and not be aware 10 mins or so beforehand when customers arrived .... it is a farce I will not be going back ...be warned !!
Service was a little slow but they were very busy. Food was very average this time. Coffee was terrible.
Lovely place, really friendly staff. Good was home made, freshly cooked and reasonably priced.
I think we’ve eaten here about 3 times in the last couple of months. The location is fantastic, the pub great with a choice of eating both inside or out.
The staff have always looked after us very well and the food we have eaten has always been to a high standard. On our last visit I had the jerk chicken which was superb.
The only thing we would like to see different is more variety in the menu. The menu has been the same on each visit and we may have been unlucky but the special has been sausages on every occasion.
Lovely pub, very friendly, good food, only downside was sitting by a lovely dog but it did smell very doggy
Lovely meal, beautiful area, comfy pub with nice service
We were eating outside on the tables next to the barbecue, and we were amazed that the table next to us were allowed to smoke, which they did continuously.
It would have expected them to be told to go to a table further away from the crowds or to a smoking area
We popped in for lunch in the garden , beautiful day, pleasant atmosphere,, friendly staff and delicious crunchy chips served with our fish. I do recommend also the Sunday roast.
great food and pub must visit again - very relaxed
Popped in for a bank holiday lunch. Friendly staff and nice food. Only had one course each and the bill was over £100 with drinks, quite expensive but would visit again. Busy, good atmosphere and service was good.
Great service. Friendly staff. Nice garden. Fast delivery of food
I think we hit this pub on an off day. Service was so slow and as we had children with us over an hour and 20 minute wait for food was just too long. Waitress was apologetic but seemed to be so embarrassed that she was avoiding us. Food was OK - a bit pricey for what it was but then it is in a lovely setting. I would have been happier if they had given us a free drink or 20% off the bill but there was no thing.
Service was friendly and efficient and the food was delicious as ever. Highly recommended but would advise to make a reservation especially on a Sunday as they are very popular and very busy.
We enjoyed a very tasty dinner at The Stag and Huntsman last Friday evening. I had the gin soaked trout as a starter which was wonderful and melted in the mouth. My main course was clam and crayfish tagliatelle in the most tasty cream sauce. After those two courses I had no room for a dessert but did enjoy a glass of Malbec and two of the delectable house Gins. Thoroughly recommended
Good food, friendly staff, lovely building. The 6 of us had a really enjoyable evening.
Very relaxed vibe and good food. The fish and chips were excellent and the Pinotage wine is great value. Service a little slow but we were not in a hurry. We will be back.
The service was very attentive and our food was delicious. I had the duck wraps which were lovely and warm and the wrap was toasted. Really good!
Great place. I would definitely recommend to go for a Sunday roast.
brilliant service, menu and food quality. We will definitely be returning to this hidden gem!
Stopped in for a Sunday Roast at about 3pm (to miss the rush) and enjoyed a tasty meal. Friendly staff and nice surrounds.
The food was delicious but the whole place was horrendously busy and the staff seemed very stretched. We were placed on a table directly next to the front bar and the queues by our table did effect the enjoyment of what was a very nice meal.
Wonderful service. The food was really lovely and the pub was lovely and cosy.
An absolute gem in the heart of the Chilterns. Lovely setting and utterly delightful staff. A real treat.
We visited for Sunday lunch. While the roast was well prepared and very tasty, we were very disappointed with the level of service at the Stag & Hunstman which appears to be due to overstretched resources for the level of covers booked. Our table was booked until 2.30pm, we asked for our bill at 2.10pm which arrived at 2.24pm - it then took another 30mins to get a member of staff to come to the table to allow us to settle our bill (2.54pm). It was so bad that we were on the verge of leaving without paying given no one seemed to want to take our money! Great pub but very poor service on Sundays.
Service was excellent, staff very friendly and knowledgeable. Excellent selection of dishes and the food was truly delicious. Can highly te
Lovely food and great service. My partner loved the lamb dish whilst I very much enjoyed the fish. Pudding, my favourite part of the meal, was fabulous.
Would definitely return again.
Good value, cosy, really enjoyed ourselves. Only comment (most wouldn't perhaps agree) but the roast was overwhelming. Too much meat! Would have preferred beef a little rarer, smaller and more veg. That's got to be a good comment really! Bread, oil and vinegar, and olives too, all very delicious, perfect. Had it not been hailing outside we'd have loved a walk too. Totally beautiful surroundings. And mega thumbs up for kind, thoughtful, relaxed staff all of them. We'll be back.
Great setting, nice ambience. We had a fab table by the window. Initial service a little slow as it's tricky running both sides of the bar then the other bar and the hotel but the older lady in particular (sorry didn't get her name) was very good. Food was very, very tasty though the brie starter is very small for the price - delicious though. My wife had the sea bass and I had the pheasant and mushroom risotto, one of the nicest things I've had for awhile! Wine was a little pricey but nice, decent selection. Overall, definitely recommended.
One of the best Christmas Day lunches ever. Perfect in every way
Excellent all round; great food, attentive staff and a lovely place.
Food good and well presented.Service amateurish
Absolutely amazing place. So accommodating for everything I needed. Could not say a bad word about this place
I'd been here before on recommendation from a friend and it was excellent. So, this time, I recommended this place to friends. The waitress that greeted us was excellent and knew exactly who we were (6 adults and 4 medium sized well behaved dogs) and took us to our table immediately. We ordered our food and drinks without issue; although I was disappointed that they no longer have a gluten free menu. There was a mess up with the food order with another table. So, two of our party had to start to eat before the remaining four waited. The food was actually very tasty but I only give it a 3 star here because of the mean vegetable portions. We had the Sunday roast and I love having roasts at pubs because they usually come with lots of veggies. I got two thin carrots (tasty) and one spear of broccolini. When we got up to pay the bill, once again there was a mix up with our table number. It was all sorted out but I just feels like they need to be a little more organised. Overall, it is very good here and I will return but just not sure I'd come back with a group.
Always enjoyed coming here for weekend lunch. Highly recommended as well as this beautiful village! It is almost like in a English movie!
The staff were young, personable and friendly. Atmosphere was welcoming and the place is comfortable and attractive. The food was okay but not spectacular but it did not matter. There was a thoughtful menu for children. Our table was booked for 12:30 and there was another booking for it at 2:30 but we had plenty of time and were not hurried at all.... we then went for a walk in the beautiful woods.
We had an excellent meal in a classic English pub. The staff were friendly and helpful. The food was well cooked and tasty. Excellent.
The food was a very pleasant surprise. Did not expect the quality or standard in a 'village pub' Waitress was also delightful and friendly
Booked a table for Sunday Roast, arrived earlier than expected so let them know as it was quite busy, waitress was very dismissive, and informed us the Kitchen was shut between 5-6pm. We said we were happy to order a drink till our booked time but she was about to go in a break so sent us to another bar!
We requested the menu approx 15 minutes before our allotted slot only to be told they stopped serving Sunday Roast at 5pm, this is neither advertised on the Menu or the website where I made my reservation.
Great country pub with lots of atmosphere. A lot of effort from owners to keep it lively and fun. On the Sunday we were there, there was a sausage and real ale festival, with live music, hay bails to sit on and a bouncy castle. Really good vibe. And the local beers were excellent, especially the Marlow Brewery seasonal ones. Reasonably priced and good Sunday lunch menu options - classic roasts, plus veggie curries, etc. All very good.
Located in fantastic village of Hambleden that give it charm. Sausages were great, but bouncy castle a bit distracting
