Located in the heart of the Goodwood Estate and surrounded by the South Downs National Park, The Star & Garter in East Dean offers a delicious selection of freshly cooked, local and seasonal food in a charming dining space with red brick and oak beams. Just a mile down the hill from Goodwood Race Course we are 12 minutes drive from Chichester. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner we try to source our ingredients as locally and as seasonally as possible. Whether you are at a Goodwood Event or walking, cycling or just out for a drive and fancy a decent meal at reasonable prices, we like to think we are one of the best around. We have a great courtyard and garden space which can seat up to 100 people. Freshly ground coffee is available all day. With a mixture of local people and tourists there's always a warm welcome here.

    Lovely country pub with fire and dogs - great food - proper steak and kidney suet-crust pie, cauliflower kimchi veggie, partridge - reasonably priced and rather nostalgic. We had a wonderful time.

    Lovely historic inn, in the heart of a beautiful village. Very welcoming hosts, and the food was delicious - chicken Thai curry and toffee ice cream. Good real ale. Excellent.

    We had a very good lunch, I would have given 5 stars all round of the fish hadn’t been over cooked. Interesting menu with lots of variety and very nicely presented food overall.

    Very interesting menu. I had Deviled Kidneys as a starter. I then had the recommended burger which was very tasty. There where other good position The deserts where more interesting than usual too I will definitely go again

    From the moment we arrived we were greeted warmly. The service throughout our lunch was friendly and informative. We had the gf fish and chips and the Mac burger with brisket and both were delicious. For dessert we had the sticky toffee pud with icecream, a huge portion, very moreish and yummy! Highly recommend Star and Garter and we will be back.

    We were constantly bothered by flies as we ate, the cheese platter was over priced for a very ordinary selection and some of the figs on it were mouldy. Food so-so, mean portions of fish

    Full price gastro pub and full service on all 5 prior visits. However today After main course waited 30 mins for table to be cleared and dessert orders -as before. When no one came I went to the bar to be rudely rebuffed by landlord. No service at table for desserts. “This is a pub. Orders at the bar”. There were 4 waiting staff and the landlord and manager lady. Six in total. I paid and left. What shocked me most was how the landlord behaved. He was rude and abrupt. I don’t understand why. If I pay £8 for dessert I’m afraid I do expect service. It’s the norm in a pub that serves food. I’m afraid I won’t return.

    The Bar man was excellent and his service was superb. The food was excellent. The service was almost too efficient in that we ordered and were fed 8 mins later. Not a bad thing, but I didn’t realise it would have come so quick as our whole experience was over in 40 mins.. Overall very good and we will definitely go back. The inside of the pub was lovely. The outside needs a bit of a tidy.

    What a fantastic find! We were visiting from Kent for the weekend and booked for a meal out on the Saturday. The staff were so welcoming, friendly and funny, and made choosing our meals so easy. The food was absolutely sublime and the atmosphere was so nice and relaxed that we happily stayed for a few more drinks after our food rather than head back to our B&B. Thank you so much team!

    I have to admit, that the choice from the menu was our's but the Veggie Fried Fish was plentiful but not that great, and the chicken which Sara had was nice, but probably not for repeating. However we will return to the place under the tree when the weather permits or inside during the winter

    Very disappointing food having been recommended by a friend recently. We found the menu very expensive service was mediocre at no time did anyone come over to see if we were ok. Had no atmosphere which we were surprised as Goodwood horse racing week and the pub has always been super busy in the past. Sorry would not recommend.

    The food was excellent, obviously freshly made and interesting variations such as the bacon marmalade relish with the charcuterie. We visited on a warm but windy day but the covered patio area was fine. The only improvement I could suggest would be a wider selection of bitters on hand pump. There were two available both with an ABV below 4 which tend to lack the depth of flavour of stronger beers. Overall a very enjoyable lunch.
