Pub
Before becoming a French bistro called Café Rouge and before that a restaurant called the Dome, this address was a pub called the Steam Packet, named after the ships that often sailed in front of it, right back from 1870. It’s position is perfect, with stunning aspects along the River Thames, tucked close to Kew Bridge, the perfect place to take respite after enjoying a stroll along the riverside path.

The steampacket is beautifully decorated and has a lovely atmosphere but that is where the positives end. The service was absolutely shocking! We were pointed to a table, by a waitress who was more focused on cleaning glasses behind the bar, we weren’t given menus so had to get them ourselves, no one told us we need to order at the bar so we were sat waiting for ages until another couple asked what the situation was - bearing in mind there were only three couples in the restaurant at this point so the wait staff were not busy. When the coffee came over it was cold, and after we had ordered and paid we were told one of the meals couldn’t be fulfilled because they were out of smoked salmon (which actually impacted both meals). No apology and more interested in moving furniture than serving customers. On the whole, a pretty terrible experience.

We celebrated a birthday and enjoyed a really excellent meal. The service was outstanding, as was the food. Would have given it "outstanding" for ambiance, but found the music somewhat intrusive.

Would thoroughly recommend it.

I was very impressed that I was called the night before to be told there was a private function on at the same time and it might be a bit noisier than usual that lunchtime. Customer service at it’s best and it made no difference to our super dining experience.

Booked table for 8pm did not get served until 9.30pm, had to keep asking for someone to take our orders. Found prices high (few slices of bread £4, one soft drink gingerbeer nearly £4. Then after paying the bill had to ask for our change. Asked why we had to wait so long, the lady said one staff down, surley for a busy Saturday evening they would have back up! Had booked for another meal at the end of month, but cancelled booking.

Since our first visit when the Steam Packet opened the menu choice and food have deteriorated considerably. Last summer, we looked forward to returning as we had such a great time. The past 2 visits, the menu has been limited, the food poor, service variable with one waiter last weekend positively scowling at us! The whole visit has unfortunately affected us adversely and we do not plan to return, which is such a shame as if is in a very convenient location for us.

Weekday Christmas Lunch for 4 of us. We gave our menu choices in advance.
Because of the season the Steam Packet was very busy but this didn't affect the service or the food. Sea bass was particularly scrumptious.
Certainly recommended.

It is a shame that the service can be very slow. When we arrived we were shown to the table and water brought straight away with menus. Great. We then sat for about 15 mins without being offered a drink let alone take our order and I had to go and find the waitresses to get them to come and take our order. After that the waitresses did check on us but......
The roast was very good, the fish and chips just ok, chips could be crunchier and maybe that’s just my preference and the batter was not that crispy either.
Love the fact you offer coffee and a small desert that works well.

Mainly it’s the service or lack of service training possibly that is letting the place down. Last time I was there it was similar slow service . Help you staff to understand what restaurant service is about.
Hope that helps

Went for family Sunday lunch. A few of us ordered roast beef which had a weird look to it and was tough as an old leather boot, a few others ordered roast chicken which was dry, so much so I had to order extra gravy to moisten it. The potatoes were solid and so over cooked they had lost any filling. What alarmed me more was the food arriving 5 mins after ordering - it’s clear it’s all ready made and loaded onto plates when ordered. This was pretty clear from the two who ordered the gnocchi and had to wait an extra ten mins for theirs to arrive.
Sadly I won’t be returning, I was quite excited by this reopening venue as it’s a great location on Sunday walks. But other surrounding pubs within walking distance do much better Sunday roasts for comparable if not cheaper prices.

Very nice food, friendly service and beautiful space. Unfortunately, the night we were there it was very quiet, so lacked any atmosphere. I would like to try it again when it is busier.

Not a great experience. Food is only prepared on the premises and it was cold. Two separate courses.
Service very slow and inexperienced staff.
Went after they opened and it wasn’t great so thought we would give them a second chance, fair to say we won’t be going back.
A great venue such a waste it’s no good

Overall good but too many diners crammed into the space. Like dining in a tin can. Food very good value but they need to change the type of potato they use for roasting.

I have been here a number of times now and this was not my best visit
We started out one waitress which seamed to be very good then it changed to another who was
just giving the minimum service. long time waiting for drinks
A very long time waiting for main course which was apparently because they had a big group in
rarely checked for drink refills
I on very few occasions have not left a tip but did on this occasion

The Steam Packet has great potential if the staff get on the ball and more attentive and they staff the kitchen to save long waits

Lovely meal and great service. We were upstairs which had a balcony, which I'm sure would be lovely in summer. Menu includes some traditional pub food (fish & chips) but in my opinion the food & menu were more of a restaurant prices and quality. A group of 4 of us shared the charcuterie sharing platter and it was a fair sized starter for 4. The sea bass was delicious. Would come back!

The waiter was very friendly and helpful. The menu wasn’t extensive enough. The Sea bass was very tasty but the sapphire was very Limp And could have had some crushed new potatoes with this dish included.the Burger was very tasty but some of the chips that came with it were cut too big so not cooked through.

Lovely friendly staff and food arrived piping hot, and beautifully presented. They happily heated the baby’s food up and accommodated us in a nice area for a big group, so it felt like a room.
Everything clean and enough room between tables to get around with a buggy.
Will Definitely visit again.

Warm welcome to my first visit. Attentive service from a waitress new to the job but attitude more than made up for lack of experience. Good value choice of menu and wines. Nice ambience. Overall really good dining experience. Thank you Steam Packet team.

We dined on a Tuesday evening, so not the noisiest or busiest time. The staff were excellent, polite attentive and very welcoming. We enjoyed the food, all cooked and presented well. It’s not the most imaginative menu - typical pub fare. We would appreciate some slightly more inventive cuisine instead of the usual tried and tested plates.

Good food and nice staff, just a real shame that the manager abruptly came to us towards the end saying “you need to be quieter” because our baby was laughing (and playing with the staff by the way), despite the fact that there was loud music in the background. Surely there is a nicer way to talk to your customers, which your staff seem to know much better than you!

Poor sea bass dry no sauce bed of inedible samphire tough roast fennel . Need to improve considerably as much local competition like Bell & Crown. Would not recommend or return. Where’s their Duke team?

We went at lunchtime and sat upstairs. It was very quiet with only two other diners (more people were downstairs). The attention and service we received was very good. The food was also very good although the choice, particularly of starters, is quite limited.

We frequent another restaurant in this chain in South Ken and this new offering has better food, equally good service and a really nice ambiance. Great for a Sunday roast after a walk along the river for locals. For non-locals traffic can be a bit taxing.

I had left a request for a vegetarian roast but they had sold out when we arrived. It would have been nice if they would have called to let us know that, as the only other vegetarian main option was gnocchi, which I’m not a fan of. Hopefully they will have more vegetarian options in the future. Waitress was very nice though.
