The Swallows Return
Went here for mothers day meal and I must say we all had a great time. The food was cooked well and the interior of the restaurant is fantastic. Friendly helpful service too!
Very long wait between courses and food was very poor. Had to complain to management. Give it a miss until management can hire experienced kitchen staff
We arrived on time only to be told due to kitchen problem the whole Sunday menu was unavailable. So at very short notice my disabled wife and I had to fined alternative eating. As this was an online booking we think the management could e mailed us of this situation and at the very least given us an apology.Very poor service. The booking was fine except we asked for a quiet table as we are both head of hearing and it was our anniversary. We were seated with two large parties and so had trouble hearing each other. Not very romantic either. The service was good and very friendly. The food was very nice except we had only just put the last mouthful of our starters in our mouths and the mains arrived! Some of the food was a little cold. The wine was lovely and we were able to have a free bottle by choosing food from the weekend treat menu. Just love their mini puds with a coffee!
As you can see I booked a table online! However the female behind the bar couldn't find my booking and was quite rude
Valentine's set dinner menu was excellent with good choice of courses.
We were in a quiet part of the restaurant on the mezzanine floor with the only downsides being quite chilly as it was feeling the benefit of the cold air from the front door and it could have had more lighting as some tables were in the dark.
The staff were excellent and very attentive so that added to the meals being served promptly made the evening a good choice.
We have been to The Swallows Return on a number of occasions so this visit was a success. In the past we have found service to be slow maybe because of choosing from the a la carte menu vs the set menu choices.
Excellent Food and ambience. It not just missed out on maximum score due to a slower service towards end of meal when it got busy. However wiĺl visit again
Unfortunately the reservation by Opentable wasn’t received but luckily there was one table left given several parties and festive diners!!!!! There seems to be an ongoing communication problem and we were asked to forward on our e-mail reservation to the Swallows from Opentable. Given we had travelled by taxi we almost had a disastrous evening!!!!!!!!!
Unfortunately we booked through yourselves, arrived and no table was booked. We believe you have sorted this out, as we would not want to book a table for six and it was not available, fortunately they were able to accommodate for two! Food was good, BUT STILL NOT HOT WHEN ARRIVED AT TABLE. This is our one and only complaint, needs hot plates as well.
I had booked a meal for my elderly Uncle & cousin & myself, we arrived in plenty of time, finally got a table even though we had booked a table, we were seated and given menus, before we could take half a breath we were asked for our drinks order, so we ordered wines, finally ordered our meals and were told 10 minutes later that 2 meals were not available and should not have been on the menu!! So sadly ended up with Fish & Chips! Not my idea of fine cuisine, sadly there nothing else on the menu Uncle & I fancied. I personally think it was rather expensive for fish & chips, the third meal was told to me to be okay, we were hoping for cackling to be on the menu but No! Needless to say, we were rather disappointed all round. Will probably stick witht the HIghdown from now on.
I'm arrival the manager said our booking was not on his system. The customer next to me had the same issue but he had booked direct with Vintage inns.
However, he quickly managed to find us a table for 6, and the other customer too so we were relieved!
Food was fairly good and plentiful, roast dinner for 6 people, with 2 rounds of drinks, 2 starters and 2 desserts, totalled £130. Service was reasonably quick and efficient with extra gravy being brought on request.
The only flaw in our visit was having reserved a table for 8 to celebrate my mum's 77th birthday, the reservation had not been made! We arrived on a blustery, busy Sunday lunchtime to be told there was no table ready for us! I showed my OpenTable email confirmation and then the staff were able to find it. Obviously the pub had not received or not found the reservation in advance (I had booked the previous Thursday). However they did squeeze us in by shuffling other previously made reservations which was a relief. I am not local, neither were most of the other members of the party so it could have been disastrous. Thank you to Swallows Return for accommodating 8 unexpected guests. The service was great and the food delicious. My only criticism is to make sure the service from OpenTable is working! I'm not sure if the error is OpenTable or Swallows Return, but it was rectified quite quickly by the restaurant for which I am grateful.
Along with another customer our bookings on line had not been passed onto the Swallows Return, but eventually given tables. After our starter that was served promptly our mains consisting of a roast and a veggie these arrived 30 mins later after complaining about delay. The roast had obviously been kept on the hot plate while the Veggie was cooked resulting in inedible burnt roasts potatoes, parsnips and dried up gravy. After complaint to management a small refund was agreed.
We were offered the table under the stairs leading to the toilets, which is clearly only suitable for two people and not four. We eventually ended up in the gallery, which personally is my favourite eating area and has been used many times over the 13 years we have eaten at The Swallows Return.
Unfortunately food was very overdone, we where put in a table under the stairs where everyone goes up using toilet ..
