Booked this as something different for my partner’s birthday but it was a bit of a disappointment. No front of house so we just stood awkwardly waiting to be seated, eventually approached someone at the bar who told us where to sit but it felt very unorganised. The (only) waiter did get us a free drink to apologise for the waiting times which was nice, and most of the staff were lovely, but it just felt very poorly planned and no one really knew what they were doing. The food was ok, bit expensive for the amount but it came out fairly quickly. Overall wouldn’t bother again, wasn’t worth it and would just go to the normal Refuge dining room for better food and service. Waited about 20 minutes just to pay the bill and left feeling quite flat! Luckily had a drink in the main Refuge bar to save the evening…

The food was good but the staff looked like it was their first day on the job. £16 for a very modestly sized cocktail and the hot chocolate bar was slightly disappointing. No marmallows or squirty cream (I would consider these basics!). The whole experience was ok but I don’t think it’s quite Moet & Chandon standard.

Was a little chilly but the food was absolutely wonderful. Incredible onion soup and loved the fondue. Could have done with more heaters on and the food was a bit of a wait but was worth it when it came!

Setting was nice, if a little cold. We braved the cold for one drink wrapped under blankets. Better service than the main Refuge dining area but still didn't go above and beyond.

We had 4 tables booked at 5 and 5.15pm. We arrived separately and someone from each table went to the bar. They couldn’t cope serving this many and sent some into the refuge bar. It took on average 30-45 minutes to get simple drinks, never mind cocktails! We started to go to order food and were told they would take our orders together so the bar was free. They then came back 20minutes later to say because we put a big order in it would be another 30mins. It came and was tasty but if you didn’t have the fondue it was very expensive for not a lot of food. We had 10 minutes eating our food then the assistant manager came and told us we were a big group who they should have “banned” immediately and that we needed to move to some comfy chairs to give the tables to others. We obliged good naturedly as we are nice people. We then again all went to get drinks from the different bars as the external one had very little stock and one server! I waited 45mins at the bar for 2 drinks. A friend ordered us baileys and 20mins later they arrived. The server moved round the assistant manager who came and told us we had 15 minutes to drink up and leave as they needed these seats now. We had booked tables on the website and were able to book them so they should have been able to serve them. I pointed out when we waited that long for drinks, that 15 minute warning was not acceptable. They were understaffed, disorganised and rude. The Italian waitress was exemplary, the food was nice but expensive, all the rest was poor beyond understanding and expensive for the pleasure of being treated like criminals for doing nothing wrong. It was horrendous. Don’t go!

There was only one staff member in the terrace area so service was quite slow as he was trying to manage behind the bar on his own and take food orders etc. The fondue was nice but not so sure about the broccoli and radishes to dip in, would have been better with chunky bread or potato. Had a nice evening but nothing spectacular.

The service was great, however most of the outdoor heaters were not working as they’d run out of gas so it was quite cold. The cheese fondue sharer was very small and not the best value.

Staff were new & when asked about the food just looked at the menu. An £8 mug of ‘hot’ chocolate with whipped cream was luke warm, in a 2/3 full dirty small mug with no cream. Quite shocking really. The soup was delicious (which for £9 should be). We left to find somewhere else to eat & drink. We were really disappointed with what should have been a pre-Christmas treat.

Arrived at refuge and walked past dining area which was completely empty. We had booked in to the terrace area. Sat down and realised there was no food available except fondue (2 of us were pregnant and can’t eat certain things). This isn’t a problem so we asked to move to dining room/area and told it was fully booked. There was not one person in there. We asked if we could order food from there and bring through to terrace and were told no as it’s different companies (except it’s all under the ‘refuge umbrella’). We needed to eat so we booked in to dimitris (our fave that we should have booked in the first place) and had a great time. Won’t return and won’t recommend but I doubt that is of interest to you 😂

Hi SarahP, Thank you for sharing your experience, and we sincerely apologize for any inconvenience you encountered during your visit. We appreciate your feedback and would like to clarify that while both the Terrace and Dining Room are part of the Refuge, the food menus are distinct. The Terrace menu is exclusive to that area, and unfortunately, orders cannot be placed from other menus. We understand the importance of accommodating dietary restrictions, and we're sorry for any frustration this may have caused. Regarding the seemingly empty dining area, it's worth noting that weekends, especially Saturdays and Sundays, are typically fully booked in advance. We appreciate your understanding and hope you might consider giving us another chance in the future. Management Team

We had a lovely time but they didn’t have Whispering Angel which was on menu & is our favourite. The service was good but slow because there was only 1 lad on himself & the girl on reception told us it was her first day but had no one to help her. Also our heaters weren’t all put on. Overall it was lovely though.

Wouldn’t rely on having booked. There’s no reservations on tables or front of house staff so it’s a free for all when you get there. It’s sort of open air (as we expected) but our heater wasn’t working. Put your thermals on. Food was barely ok, not in any hurry to return

Fondue was an insult. Waited 45 minutes for it to arrive to then be a very small portion of food when we asked if we could have it for three people and laid extra for that. Cheese was barely melting, brocolli was cold, radishes not prepared properly and bread was not as displayed in the pictures online. Manager couldnt manage to put a smile on her face and kept just walking off and not fully explaining the situation. I had to go and find her twice at the front desk to see where she was. The whole thing was disappointing.

Loved the atmosphere & had a great night but disappointed with the fondu which was a basically cheese sauce and not a fondu and that the heaters in the outdoor space had absolutely no effect so it was freezing. Still love Refuge though.

Great concept, food was wonderful, DJ brilliant, but the managers need to train their staff. What’s the point in going to all that trouble and then having staff that haven’t been trained in what to do. Having to get up and ask what the process is for ordering is not acceptable especially as the venue was less than full. Having to ask for an ice bucket for champagne is not expected. Lots of small annoying things that are so avoidable with the right training. As a lover of everything the Refuge offers, I hope this offering improves

Unfortunately we had a table booked at 17.30 ahead of the theatre at 19.30 and despite our best efforts to order quickly our food didn't arrive until 18.45. We had to go to the bar to order and the system was faulty meaning the staff member had to go inside to put the order through. Massively understaffed with inexperienced staff- not their fault- just such a shame for a beautiful setting.
