The Terrace Restaurant at The Montagu Arms Hotel
At the heart of one of the New Forest’s most beautiful and historic villages lies The Terrace Restaurant at The Montagu Arms Hotel – it has three AA Rosettes and is run by Head Chef Matthew Whitfield who recently returned to the UK from one of the world’s top restaurants. Working under renowned chef Daniel Humm at Eleven Madison Park, Matthew has extensive experience at a succession of Michelin-starred restaurants. His style of cooking is modern and refined using the best of the New Forest and the hotel’s own produce to create dishes that take local provenance really seriously
The restaurant pays homage to both tradition and innovation with an extensive wine list including organic, un-oaked and prestigious wines and champagnes chosen by the Sommelier.
From a relaxed lunch or evening meal to lavish weddings and private functions, The Terrace is the place to eat in Hampshire.
Excellent service from very polite and helpful staff. Munro provided excellent Table service.
The meal was very tasty, well cooked and presented. Probably justifies the price! However drinks are overpriced and the practice of loading a 12% service charge to the bill is in itself something that will affect my decision on whether or not to return. 12% is excessive, and by advising clients that they may remove it if they wish, makes them feel more than a little awkward if they do not wish to pay it.
Always a wonderful experience with excellent service. We always feel very well looked after and we love coming back each year.
Used to be one of my favourites.
I had lunch on my only day off of the week not realising the restaurant was taking part in the eat out dine out.
The Vegetarian starter was a boil potato 🤬. The chef needs to go back to school and get with the times .
On the up the upside the Sommelier is excellent and a credit to the restaurant
Our experience in the restaurant was very enjoyable as it was our first time that we have eaten out since last Christmas. The service was good, staff very pleasant and we had a table in front of open doors so the temperature was comfortable on a hot day and we felt reasonably safe after being shielded for so long. However, we felt social distancing was a difficulty due to the layout of the hotel gardens and people were having to pass each other. The hotel had put entrance and exit signs on the exterior doors but, as the entrance door was wide open, the sign was reversed and therefore could not be seen. The greatest concern was the ladies toilet. As there were so many diners, mainly outside, the ladies toilet was naturally in constant use. I used it on our arrival after our journey and again on leaving and it was obvious that there had been no one in to check and clean. I do think this is the one area which the hotel could easily manage as it is important to us ladies.
We have been coming to The Terrace for 8 years and it's as good now as it was then.
Service is always friendly but professional and the ambience second to none at a table overlooking the garden.
We both enjoyed the menu sampling Plaice from nearby Mudeford, Ham Hock to start, South Coast Hake, wonderfully tender Lamb, superb local Cheeses from the Isle of Wight and a refreshing Cream Cheese Mousse.
Consistency is always difficult to achieve but The Terrace have been consistent in every department over a long time.
For a relaxing lunch or dinner you cannot find a better place to eat in our view in The New Forest - we'd striongly recommend it to anyone who enjoys fine food and wine all in a peaceful surrounding - we are fortunate to live round the corner to walk be able to this wonderful restaurant.
Lovely experience, great food, wine and great service
The most wonderful experience of a traditional English Hotel Restaurant
All the stops were pulled out, everyone was so polite and kind, the food was delicious and the atmosphere - perfect. A wonderful anniversary!
Good for romantic dinner
Really enjoy the dinner
Booked for anniversary - a wonderful experience.
Lovely food, attentive service, great atmosphere and loads of character. We will return.
Lovely setting, lovely food, lovely service.
Would definitely go back.
Super location in the middle of the New Forest.
Montagu Arms gardens are just lovely.
Bar staff particularly to be noted. This man has been there for years and is quietly efficient.
We had an excellent 2 course lunch and coffee. All our food was beautifully cooked and we received excellent, friendly service.
Delicious food, amazing friendly service, beautiful surroundings would highly recommend
Fabulous food in a very relaxing atmosphere. The hotel rooms are also lovely.
Me and some friends went for a group valentines dinner, and it was one of the best restaurants I've been too so far. Absolutely incredible food which each dish tasted so different and unique with flavours that went so well, and not to mention how delicately they were made. They tailored for myself who doesn't eat seafood/fish and they done great. Nothing was an issue and everyone was kind and helpful from start to finish, with some staff members not being too serious with a great sense of humour! Not to mention the delicious cocktails. I will definitely come back here, worth the hour drive!
We were well looked after, food was amazing and the decor was lovely. I would recommend doing the 7 courses as the food was exquisite. I hope to return again!
We got married here nearly 5 years ago so it’s a very special venue for us, we’re biased, but this is the BEST place for a romantic evening, celebration, birthday or just pop in for a coffee after a walk. We had dinner on valentines night, which was simply superb. Table booked for 7pm finally dragged ourselves away at 11.30pm - wishing we were staying, it’s so relaxing and luxurious!! We can not fault the attention to detail, the amazing food served under the guidance of the new chef, the service, it’s all faultless. Can’t recommend highly enough and can’t wait to find an excuse to go back!!!
Yes but disappointed that wasn't advised that there was a tasting menu on 14th February. Also disappointed by fondue dish, simply less edible than the rest of the menu and couldn't be shared with coeliac wife, having been told that the entire menu was gluten free. Otherwise very good.
We went to The Terrace Restaurant for Valentine's Day lunch - the food was amazing & the service was unbelievable. We will go again for sure.
This is a MUST GO TO place for that special occasion. We always feel good when visiting The Terrace Resteraunt, and the food is divine.
Ambience and service were excellent and the food was outstanding.
Always a treat at the Terrace!
Delicious 7 course tasking menu, but the staff did not understand our voucher 'Friday Feasting for 2'. We did not meet the somelier for wine tasting, but were seated directly in the Terrace Dining room. It was later agreed that we would have the somerlier do the wine pairing as the former did not seem possible. We did not get invited to meet the Chef in the kitchen pre-desert - which was also on our voucher. We are local residents and thought the voucher looked interesting!
Our booking experience was also difficult - no reply to the reservations email and 2 attempts for open table to book us - with no mention of the special arangements on the confirmation email.
Beautiful flavours and very helpful staff. Would highly recommend
Simply outstanding. Could not have asked for anything more.
This chef should have two Michelin stars immediately.
Staff is so kind,.... food is so good.... wonderful experience
Fantastic food and great service from all the staff, will definitely be back. Thank you all for a lovely evening
Excellent dining experience. Taster menu superb. Service was great and the sommelier very entertaining
Absolutely superb! Food, service and ambiance all excellent.
I took my granddaughter who is visiting from Australia. It was a special treat for her and her partner and I wasn't disappointed. The food, service and restaurant were outstanding.
Already recommended it to anyone who will listen. Flawless from start to finish.
Its obvious why the restaurant has lost its Michelin star!
Amuse Bouche, excellent. Starter, well presented and most enjoyable. Main course of roast pork with goose fat roast potatoes could probably be bettered by the average carvery pub!
Presentation was unappetising; two pieces of grey/pink pork loin laid on top of the plate, hiding veg beneath. Taste was decidedly average / bland, even the roast potatoes were a little anaemic and not as crunchy as you would expect. Oh by the way, the pork was served pink, this was not noted on the menu; according to the restaurant manageress it is the norm and if you wanted your pork well done you should have requested it when ordering, however without knowing it was going to be served pink.....
Not an enjoyable experience, service was OK, but would not warrant the 12% gratuity that is added to the bill.
Overall very disappointing compared to the restaurants recent past and to be honest not worth risking again. Didn't bother to stay for a desert, just wanted to leave.
Amazing food and the staff are lovely and welcoming. Also adapted to vegan and gluten free beautifully and I didn't feel like I was missing out on anything. All in our group said their food was outstanding and the service excellent, thank you
Each course had an interesting mix of tastes and textures. The cooking and presentation could not be faulted. The wine list is extensive and not outrageously expensive.
A very relaxing afternoon and fine dining.
Fantastic service, amazing menu would highly recommend
On arrival we were seated ok but did notice a younger couple were treated like royalty coats were taken and they had quite a lot of attention from the waiter ,we weren’t even asked if we would like are coats taken.
We had an amazing evening on Saturday, we felt very spoilt and the food was to die for.
Honestly, I was dubious before going there for my girlfriend's 40th meal with family. I thought it may be pretentious and overly expensive. However, I am very pleased we went there. We had a great evening. Yes, it was expensive, but there were many nice unexpected touches that made the difference from other nice restaurants and justified the cost. It wasn't pretentious, it was just extra special.
