THE TERRACE AT THE MONTAGU ARMS

At the heart of one of the New Forest’s most beautiful and historic villages lies The Terrace Restaurant at The Montagu Arms Hotel – it has three AA Rosettes and is run by Head Chef Matthew Whitfield who recently returned to the UK from one of the world’s top restaurants. Working under renowned chef Daniel Humm at Eleven Madison Park, Matthew has extensive experience at a succession of Michelin-starred restaurants. His style of cooking is modern and refined using the best of the New Forest and the hotel’s own produce to create dishes that take local provenance really seriously

The restaurant pays homage to both tradition and innovation with an extensive wine list including organic, un-oaked and prestigious wines and champagnes chosen by the Sommelier.

From a relaxed lunch or evening meal to lavish weddings and private functions, The Terrace is the place to eat in Hampshire.

Fantastic food, fantastic wine, very well looked after from the time we arrive and until we left.

Will defiantly return. First class restaurant with first class service.

Perfect lunchtime. The food was delicious, each plate looked and tasted wonderful and the lunchtime set menu was very good value. The sommelier was friendly and extremely helpful in suggesting wines that would go with our menu choices. Pre lunch drinks and after lunch coffee were served in the garden. The combination of great food, perfect service (friendly but very professional) and the lovely garden made for a memorable day. The Montagu is not flashy or ostentatious but has a calm relaxed country house vibe but with top class service, staff, food and wine.

A beautiful evening. An atmosphere more for the older guest rather than younger, food was super and we will be visiting again soon...

Really excellent food with innovative flavour combinations. Very friendly and down to earth service. Portions arguably on the small side, but that's always a personal thing. Word of advice regarding operating the Coravin on a newly opened wine bottle - do not turn upside down or any sediment will be dislodged and cloud the wine. I would also like to see a measure that shows you are getting 125ml, especially for higher end fine wine, and a bigger better quality glass (Zalto or Riedel).

We had a delicious meal here, we eat out alot and this is the best food we have had for some time. The service was also excellent. The only thing I would say is that the portion sizes are on the small side even for fine dining.

Dined here many times - new menu ok but tasting menu has shrunk significantly which is disappointing. Muse bouche a total triumph, lobster starter too fragrant which kills the lobster flavour.
Creedy carver duck ok but surprisingly chewy, my wife had the beef which was exemplary.
The old favourite dessert salted caramel fondant is still as good.
Had to pour own water at the start of the meal.

In summary- still a nice experience but standards and menu have experienced slippage in my opinions

We were in the area cycling across through the forest. We had booked online the previous evening. The £45 cancellation fee nearly scared us off, and we assumed they were busy if they need such a policy, but in fact the main dining areas were only 1/3rd full, and we got the impression that a lot of diners were ordering from bar menus rather than the restaurant menu. If they want to fill the place they need to drop the scary booking policy...

When we arrived the staff were helpful and told us we could wheel our bikes into the courtyard, and sat us down for drinks and to look at menus. The courtyard is a stunningly peaceful spot on a lovely day. A small fountain, birds and plenty of sunshine and shade...

We were then moved to our table (still outside at our request) and ordered the lunch set menu. All the dishes that arrived were very good. The trout was very good indeed. We hadn't maybe expected this standard of cookery, but we couldn't really find fault in much at all. We had only couple of glasses of wine , as we were cycling again after. With coffee and a brandy the bill was around £100, which we thought exceptional value for this standard of food in such a setting.

Would heartily recommend to anyone in the area, they just need to sort out the booking policy to encourage visitors rather than scare them away....

We were celebrating our 10th anniversary together and couldn't have chosen a better place! The dining room was beautifully decorated and looked out towards the delightful, landscaped garden and water feature. Luckily as it was midweek, it wasn't busy and we got a table near to the windows and french doors. The staff were suitably attentive, knowledgeable, polite and friendly. The food was absolutely fantastic; beautifully presented and tasted wonderful.

We dine fairly regularly at the Terrace Restaurant, and this is the first time the service has been below par. Table service was slow, we weren’t asked what we’d like to drink when sat down, and when we asked for coffee in the conservatory, it didn’t make appearance. After 20 mins of waiting I went off to find someone, and decided just to ask for the bill.
It just felt as though they were understaffed. Hopefully not a downward trend for what is normally a faultless experience.

Thanks to the team at Montagu Arms for taking such good care for a large family lunch and such attentive (yet discreet) service - never interupting but keeping the meal flowing.
Fab food really beautifully presented. A very happy family event!
Thanks!

I booked lunch for my grown up children and intended to pay the bill.

However my children decided they would pay as an early Fathers day treat.

My children ordered the wine which was suggested by the staff as no wine list was presented.

If I was paying, I would have checked this before ordering. I hope they were not talked into expensive bottles of wine.

It was a perfect experience spoiled by only one thing, on arrival we were offered glass champagne while we looked at menus, we were led to believe this was complimentary but it was on the bill at £13.00 per glass. We had really enjoyed ourselves and didn’t want to spoil it by complaining.

You should make it clear in future if it’s complimentary or not

The whole experience was exceptional from the food to the setting and service. Every course we had the pleasure of eating was delicious and all the waiting staff were clearly trained to a very high standard. You certainly get what you pay for. We would not hesitate to recommend or visit again as an indulgent treat.

The venue itself is lovely particularly if it's nice weather and you can have a drink before lunch on the garden terrace.

However the food was average and I was disappointed that on Easter Sunday the menu was pretty much a selection of roasts rather than anything like the sample menus and so it felt like a very expensive roast for nothing exceptional.

Also we decided to get a nice bottle of wine that cost a little more. We'd normally only drink one bottle with a meal between 2 and I felt that the waiter was unnecessarily filling the glasses up trying to rush us to have another bottle.

At over £100 per head I don't think this was good value for money and would t return when there are places like the Pig nearby.

Had a weekend away to the New Forest over Easter and chose this as one of our restaurants while we were away.

The grounds are lovely, so well worth getting there early for a drink outside. This is not pub food, and is not the sort of place you would feel overly dressed wearing a jacket. That said, a lot of people were more casually dressed than I would have expected, although considering the wonderful weather I can understand why.

Food was limited in choice which is not always a bad thing and what we had was superb. Service was very professional but still friendly.

Definitely a place to try when staying in or around the New Forest.

A wonderful Sunday lunch. Best bread ever. Amazing service and the food was to die for. I had a brisket terrine to start which was so beautiful to look at and then the gnocchi main course which was full of flavours. The rest of our party had roast beef main and it was an incredible Sunday lunch. Lemon posset pudding was wonderful. Couldn’t recommend more highly!

Four of us celebrated my cousin's 95th birthday over Sunday lunch. We had a variety of starters, including soup and salmon, which were really good. We all went with a traditional roast for the main course - generous portions and very tasty. But the best part of the lunch was the staff who were unfailingly helpful, friendly, and incredibly thoughtful. It made a special occasion very special indeed. They brought in a cake, and even joined in and sang 'Happy Birthday'. A great place for a family celebration - and excellent access for people using a wheelchair or walking aid. Already looking forward to going back!
