Working under renowned chef Daniel Humm at Eleven Madison Park, Matthew has extensive experience at a succession of Michelin-starred restaurants. His style of cooking is modern and refined using the best of the New Forest and the hotel’s own produce to create dishes that take local provenance really seriously
The restaurant pays homage to both tradition and innovation with an extensive wine list including organic, un-oaked and prestigious wines and champagnes chosen by the Sommelier.

I took my granddaughter who is visiting from Australia. It was a special treat for her and her partner and I wasn't disappointed. The food, service and restaurant were outstanding.
Already recommended it to anyone who will listen. Flawless from start to finish.

Amuse Bouche, excellent. Starter, well presented and most enjoyable. Main course of roast pork with goose fat roast potatoes could probably be bettered by the average carvery pub!
Presentation was unappetising; two pieces of grey/pink pork loin laid on top of the plate, hiding veg beneath. Taste was decidedly average / bland, even the roast potatoes were a little anaemic and not as crunchy as you would expect. Oh by the way, the pork was served pink, this was not noted on the menu; according to the restaurant manageress it is the norm and if you wanted your pork well done you should have requested it when ordering, however without knowing it was going to be served pink.....
Not an enjoyable experience, service was OK, but would not warrant the 12% gratuity that is added to the bill.
Overall very disappointing compared to the restaurants recent past and to be honest not worth risking again. Didn't bother to stay for a desert, just wanted to leave.
Amazing food and the staff are lovely and welcoming. Also adapted to vegan and gluten free beautifully and I didn't feel like I was missing out on anything. All in our group said their food was outstanding and the service excellent, thank you
Each course had an interesting mix of tastes and textures. The cooking and presentation could not be faulted. The wine list is extensive and not outrageously expensive.

On arrival we were seated ok but did notice a younger couple were treated like royalty coats were taken and they had quite a lot of attention from the waiter ,we weren’t even asked if we would like are coats taken.
We had an amazing evening on Saturday, we felt very spoilt and the food was to die for.
Honestly, I was dubious before going there for my girlfriend's 40th meal with family. I thought it may be pretentious and overly expensive. However, I am very pleased we went there. We had a great evening. Yes, it was expensive, but there were many nice unexpected touches that made the difference from other nice restaurants and justified the cost. It wasn't pretentious, it was just extra special.
We had the seven course tasting menu, which was excellent. It was unusual to me to have cheese as part of a tasting menu, especially before the dessert courses, but the cheese really was delicious. Our waiter struck the right balance and we had a lovely evening from the interesting canapés served with our drinks in the bar through the seven courses to the rich coffee at the end.
Outstanding service and food, excellent value for money. A real treat
Fantastic food equalled only by the service. All dishes were prepared impeccably and tasted delicious. The wine pairings were perfect and the sommelier gave wonderful insight into each wine. Would highly recommend especially for a special occasion.
The food was excellent. Service was good and efficient while eating though frustrating before being seated; primarily because other couples who arrived after us us, were seated before us for no apparent reason. This gave a feeling of others being prioritised ahead of us.
We ordered the tasting menu which is undefined at the point of ordering, but was essentially a shorter version of their wider tasting menu.
I have a shellfish allergy and the first two dishes were delivered with most of the elements missing - no change to meal or no replacement - so first two dishes were a very simple dish of hake and potato and then red mullet and carrots. I complained at the point of receiving the bill, but the serving staff fobbed me off. But there was no consistent member of staff serving us, so they may have had no idea what the issue was.
The main courses were ok, but not special. The desert however was excellent.
Service was terrible - 8:30 booking and I think almost all of our food arrived after 10. Others arrived before us and received food after and they were also discussing at the table how slow the service was.
A very expensive meal - but an ultimately disappointing one.

Cosy and warm ambiance with fantastic food and wine. The service was exemplary and we were made to feel at ease straight away. Would recommend to a friend and would love to come back one day.
Went for the Sunday roast special. Nice but simple menu. Roast was a surprisingly large portion of meat. Service was very good and friendly.
Cannot fault the service. Every member of staff was very friendly and helpful. The downside was the portion sizes. The Sunday roast was normal size but all the other dishes we had were quite small. Although the food itself was very good. The decor was really dated too and could do with a bit of a refurb. So sadly this means we won’t be going back.
Extremely well presented & tasty food...very friendly & attentive staff...will definitely return on our next visit to the New Forest.
As said by many others the portion size is poor but nothing changes so obviously they are not interested
The "new" Matthew is clearly proving to be up to standard and we enjoyed a very good lunch with some outstanding local venison the highlight of the meal. As usual Sergio picked out the perfect bottle to accompany the food.
Traditional setting, beautiful food, excellent service
The tasting menu was even better than the last time that we visited. Each course was superb. This time I upgraded to the fine wine paring, so very pleased that I did. The knowledgeable sommelier guided me through each of the wines and this enabled me to try some exquisite wines that I would not normally have chosen. Service was a good balance of attentiveness without being overbearing. The setting with its view of the garden is very nice, the room decor just lacks a little something to make it more special, regardless a great evening and one that we will return to again.
Was good food could have been a better for the price...portion size on certain dishes could be bigger. Drinks should be cheaper. Car park not suitable for women's shoes overall would attend again when funds are saved

Setting is great, staff were friendly if a little fake/formal, like they were doing an impression of Carson from Downton Abbey. The food was outstanding and I really mean that BUT there was so little of it. Embarrassingly small portions, possibly 50% of the size of other menus of the same price. We went home hungry and a little perplexed about the experience.
As always an outstanding dining experience, in terms of quality of food (taste, portion size and presentation) and wine list, backed up by exemplary service (hard to better) and ambience (try to get a table immediately facing the grassy terrace). Take whoever you want and for any occasion, this place will not let you down

Perfect lunchtime. The food was delicious, each plate looked and tasted wonderful and the lunchtime set menu was very good value. The sommelier was friendly and extremely helpful in suggesting wines that would go with our menu choices. Pre lunch drinks and after lunch coffee were served in the garden. The combination of great food, perfect service (friendly but very professional) and the lovely garden made for a memorable day. The Montagu is not flashy or ostentatious but has a calm relaxed country house vibe but with top class service, staff, food and wine.
Het diner was weer perfect. Tot in de puntjes verzorgd. Heerlijke verrassende smaken. Personeel was weer attent, prettig en behulpzaam. Complimenten!!
First visited in April with a voucher given by friends, returned in September for a special occasion.

Really excellent food with innovative flavour combinations. Very friendly and down to earth service. Portions arguably on the small side, but that's always a personal thing. Word of advice regarding operating the Coravin on a newly opened wine bottle - do not turn upside down or any sediment will be dislodged and cloud the wine. I would also like to see a measure that shows you are getting 125ml, especially for higher end fine wine, and a bigger better quality glass (Zalto or Riedel).
We had a delicious meal here, we eat out alot and this is the best food we have had for some time. The service was also excellent. The only thing I would say is that the portion sizes are on the small side even for fine dining.
Excellent food and lunch time two/three course deal good value. Service is always of the highest standard and the sommelier in particular is very friendly and helpful with good wine suggestions.
