Service was attentive and readily available but not over the top and pushy. I had pigeon followed by fillet steak followed by sticky toffee pudding, all three courses were excellent and well cooked. The pigeon was left nice and pink, steak cooked perfectly to my preference and the pudding I could swap clotted cream for ice cream. All of this was accompanied by a superb bottle of Chablis.

I haven't been in The Tree Crowns for almost a quarter of a Century. I live in Cyprus now but am a Devonian and walked the Moor most weekends. I liked The Three Crowns then for its atmosphere, dog friendliness, good food at reasonable prices and the variety of ales. I am pleased to say that when we arrived on Sunday lunchtime it was almost as if the intervening period since my last visit had never happened. The food was as good as I remembered, the fire was burning brightly, dogs were lying under the tables, wonderful. I will see you again when I visit in the Spring of next year. Thank you.

We have visited The Three Crowns in Chagford a few times now. Usually to mark an occasion. Last time and more so this time we left feeling disappointed. We booked 2pm on a Sunday lunchtime expecting to have the tradition roast. We placed our order with lovely staff-starters and then 1x vegetarian roast, 1x beef & 1x pork roast. 10 minutes later we were told there was no vegetarian or beef left. The alternative vegetarian meal was chosen & the beef changed to pork. So no real problem. 5 minutes later the original order was ‘now available ‘ ok so changed back again. So no real problem again. When the meals arrived there was no Yorkshire puddings. When we asked why the answer was ‘oh we have run out, it’s been really busy’
Now from the time we placed the original order to the main course being delivered was well over half an hour. Plenty of time for a chef to make more Yorkshire Puddings. This left us feeling disappointed and paying for not a complete meal. We stayed for coffee which would have been nice if were complimentary but no. The young lady serving was very apologetic and we made sure she understood that we did not blame her but we’re not sure that an 45 min drive & then disappointment is worth it.

Warm welcome, lovely environment, prompt service and great food. Did not anticipate limited vegetables with lamb main, and waitress did not know what veg was available, nor the range available for a bitter shandy. But

Rib eye Steak sehr gut. Salate köstlich, selbstverständlich nur frische Zutaten. Der Kaffee ebenfalls sehr gut. Das Three Crowns kann man sehr empfehlen.

Came here a few years ago and loved it but this time we were sat in the conservatory near the door so every time someone came in and out we were in a cold draught! There was a bone in the ham hock starter and the steak was tough! Although there were plenty of tables available we were seated next to a group of about 10 people so we had to shout to hear each other. After asking the waitress to give us 10 minutes before looking at the dessert menu she never came back! Also the table was very very sticky! Hope this was just one of those nights as the bar and the staff were very welcoming.

Wonderful welcome and room upgrade. We had a lovely comfort room at the front of the hotel. V clean with good quality linen. Front of house staff exceptional. Excellent supper with friends in the courtyard restaurant. Recommend the steak. Had to park the car in the local car park but v close and if you book a superior room parking is included.

We have eaten at the Three Crowns several times recently. The first occasion was excellent all round. Last time it was very noisy and the service was poor. On this occasion I was disappointed to find that the choice in the lunchtime menu is now very restricted. In fact it is so limited that your average pub nearby has a wider and more diverse choice at less cost. While the food was hot and tasty enough there was little finesse in the presentation.
On the basis of this experience I cannot recommend the Three Crowns.

Lovely pub and could not fault the food. Excellent value for money. The only criticism would be is that staff walked past our table on numerous occasions and did not clear our plates away. Very friendly staff. Would definitely recommend.

Lovely little find whilst on our holiday in Devon. Very friendly to dogs and the food was lovely. Service was a little slow but in their defence it was a busy Saturday night. Waitress friendly and made fuss of dogs. We have some nibbles to share and fish & chips and burger for main. Burger could have been slightly more seasoned but that is a personal opinion only. Would go again and recommend.

Been many times before and always found it the best pub around, even had my 40th party there but very disappointed this time. Firstly we were seated in the atrium which is a fantastic space but on this occasion it appeared to have turned in to a hotel corridor with people constantly trundling through with their wheelie suitcases to get to their rooms slightly distracting you from your dining experience. Our table was also pushed up against the bar so staff gossiping and people queuing next to our table waiting to pay was also slightly off putting. Normally I wouldn’t mind but the Three Crowns isn’t a cheap dining experience and I’d expect just a little more thought to go in to table placement.

I now come on to the food, well how disappointing. I don’t know if you have a new chef or were short staffed in the kitchen but what’s happened!!?? Sirloin steak was plain horrible, chewy, dry on the outside and undercooked in the middle, the worst steak I’ve EVER had and what’s happened to your usually high standard of presentation of food? Burger just plonked on a plate with a few chips thrown on for good measure (fat needed changing in fryer as they tasted of dirty fat). Not your usual high standards of finesse.

I recently voted for you in the Muddy stiletto awards too!
Please don’t let your standards drop as this has always set you up above the others.

VERY disappointed by the fillet steak. At that price it should cut like cream and melt in the mouth. Tough and not very tasty. The prawn starter was supposed to be in light batter, but it was thick and unappealing. Fish and chips was OK I gather.

Lovely natural light flooded dining room. We also loved the bar up front. There were many beer and cider options to choose from. The full monty cheese plate was a great value. The service was a bit slow but there were a few large parties eating at the same time so perhaps that was why. Would absolutely come back!

First Sunday Lunch here for us. Faultless service from all of the staff, friendly, smiley and efficient (one girl noticed our wobbly table and without any prompting from us came over with a wedge and fixed it). Very well cooked food in generous portions. A firm favourite with us whenever we visit Dartmoor.

Location and premises were lovely, menu looked good too.
Service was average, it was lacking the attention of an establishment charging £24 for a steak.
We shared rather stale rolls for an appetiser (they were only £2, so cant really complain too much). My husband had the steak and was very disappointed considering the venue and the cost.
Would return for a drink but probably eat elsewhere. Shame.

Sadly we were seated outside of the restaurant which is a shame because that’s why we booked..we wouldn’t have gone otherwise but given we traveled 40 mins... I would advise not booking through open table as they confirmed you can be seated anywhere. Phone instead.

The menu on open table also doesn’t match the venue.

Food was ok, somewhat salty on the pork loin dish but otherwise fine.

Staff accommodates child with allergies with no issues.

We had dined at the Three Crowns on two previous occasions and been very pleased with all aspects of the experience. We were joined by two guests at Sunday lunch on the 14th April for an anniversary occasion.
We were embarrassed by the slow service and the poor food. We ordered "breads" while awaiting our main course and this resulted in two very ordinary bread rolls. 3 guests had the roast beef which was 2 thin slices which were fatty and devoid of flavour. The Yorkshire pudding was filled with thin gravy and soggy.
2 guests ordered "cheesecake" which bore no resemblance to a conventional cheesecake and seemed to be the components in a bowl.
In normal circumstances I would have returned the main course at once ,as the occasion was more important than the food, I did not.
Our table was adjacent to a noisy party and the ambiance was poor.
Previously we have recommended the Three Crowns to a number of friends. On the basis of our recent experience we shall stop doing so.
