The Three Crowns
Behind its imposing granite facade, the Three Crowns is a magical mix of 13th century features and contemporary comfort and style. From beamed ceiling and huge inglenook fireplaces, to a glass atrium and stunning courtyard garden, the Three Crowns is a delightful place to enjoy great food and a comfortable stay.
We offer a delicious menu featuring fresh, local seasonal produce, cooked to order by our talented team. We also offer an extensive wine list and a great selection of soft drinks. We have a policy of ‘keeping it local’ and use local ingredients in our dishes and stock local wines and juices. Whether you choose to eat in the cosy, traditional front bar with its log fire and mullioned windows or the stunning light and open glass atrium we are sure you will enjoy your meal.
Came here a few years ago and loved it but this time we were sat in the conservatory near the door so every time someone came in and out we were in a cold draught! There was a bone in the ham hock starter and the steak was tough! Although there were plenty of tables available we were seated next to a group of about 10 people so we had to shout to hear each other. After asking the waitress to give us 10 minutes before looking at the dessert menu she never came back! Also the table was very very sticky! Hope this was just one of those nights as the bar and the staff were very welcoming.
One of the best meals we have had in a long time. The use of local suppliers for the food is also great.
Wonderful welcome and room upgrade. We had a lovely comfort room at the front of the hotel. V clean with good quality linen. Front of house staff exceptional. Excellent supper with friends in the courtyard restaurant. Recommend the steak. Had to park the car in the local car park but v close and if you book a superior room parking is included.
We had a pork belly and steak main course plus a lemon posset dessert.. all superb.. we were “passing through” the area and are so glad we went to The Three Crowns.. a super pub cooking great food..
We have eaten at the Three Crowns several times recently. The first occasion was excellent all round. Last time it was very noisy and the service was poor. On this occasion I was disappointed to find that the choice in the lunchtime menu is now very restricted. In fact it is so limited that your average pub nearby has a wider and more diverse choice at less cost. While the food was hot and tasty enough there was little finesse in the presentation.
On the basis of this experience I cannot recommend the Three Crowns.
Lovely pub and could not fault the food. Excellent value for money. The only criticism would be is that staff walked past our table on numerous occasions and did not clear our plates away. Very friendly staff. Would definitely recommend.
Lovely little find whilst on our holiday in Devon. Very friendly to dogs and the food was lovely. Service was a little slow but in their defence it was a busy Saturday night. Waitress friendly and made fuss of dogs. We have some nibbles to share and fish & chips and burger for main. Burger could have been slightly more seasoned but that is a personal opinion only. Would go again and recommend.
Been many times before and always found it the best pub around, even had my 40th party there but very disappointed this time. Firstly we were seated in the atrium which is a fantastic space but on this occasion it appeared to have turned in to a hotel corridor with people constantly trundling through with their wheelie suitcases to get to their rooms slightly distracting you from your dining experience. Our table was also pushed up against the bar so staff gossiping and people queuing next to our table waiting to pay was also slightly off putting. Normally I wouldn’t mind but the Three Crowns isn’t a cheap dining experience and I’d expect just a little more thought to go in to table placement.
I now come on to the food, well how disappointing. I don’t know if you have a new chef or were short staffed in the kitchen but what’s happened!!?? Sirloin steak was plain horrible, chewy, dry on the outside and undercooked in the middle, the worst steak I’ve EVER had and what’s happened to your usually high standard of presentation of food? Burger just plonked on a plate with a few chips thrown on for good measure (fat needed changing in fryer as they tasted of dirty fat). Not your usual high standards of finesse.
I recently voted for you in the Muddy stiletto awards too!
Please don’t let your standards drop as this has always set you up above the others.
VERY disappointed by the fillet steak. At that price it should cut like cream and melt in the mouth. Tough and not very tasty. The prawn starter was supposed to be in light batter, but it was thick and unappealing. Fish and chips was OK I gather.
Lovely natural light flooded dining room. We also loved the bar up front. There were many beer and cider options to choose from. The full monty cheese plate was a great value. The service was a bit slow but there were a few large parties eating at the same time so perhaps that was why. Would absolutely come back!
Excellent service very friendly staff. Reasonable prices.
First Sunday Lunch here for us. Faultless service from all of the staff, friendly, smiley and efficient (one girl noticed our wobbly table and without any prompting from us came over with a wedge and fixed it). Very well cooked food in generous portions. A firm favourite with us whenever we visit Dartmoor.
Location and premises were lovely, menu looked good too.
Service was average, it was lacking the attention of an establishment charging £24 for a steak.
We shared rather stale rolls for an appetiser (they were only £2, so cant really complain too much). My husband had the steak and was very disappointed considering the venue and the cost.
Would return for a drink but probably eat elsewhere. Shame.
Very friendly service. Food was amazing...the Dartmoor lamb was so delicious. Nice touch to have a choice of dessert wines for after, one of which we were recommended to pour over our ice cream! Yummy.
The lunchtime menu was very limited and basic. It was disappointing that a venue the calbibre of the Three Crowns couldn't provide better fayre. They should be able to improve on a basic'pub lunch '
We chose a table outside which was lovely. The food was excellent. Best chips ever ! Service polite and friendly.
Friendly staff. Service had a nice pace to it. Not rushed but didn't wait either. Food was nicely cooked but not a big choice
Sadly we were seated outside of the restaurant which is a shame because that’s why we booked..we wouldn’t have gone otherwise but given we traveled 40 mins... I would advise not booking through open table as they confirmed you can be seated anywhere. Phone instead.
The menu on open table also doesn’t match the venue.
Food was ok, somewhat salty on the pork loin dish but otherwise fine.
Staff accommodates child with allergies with no issues.
We had dined at the Three Crowns on two previous occasions and been very pleased with all aspects of the experience. We were joined by two guests at Sunday lunch on the 14th April for an anniversary occasion.
We were embarrassed by the slow service and the poor food. We ordered "breads" while awaiting our main course and this resulted in two very ordinary bread rolls. 3 guests had the roast beef which was 2 thin slices which were fatty and devoid of flavour. The Yorkshire pudding was filled with thin gravy and soggy.
2 guests ordered "cheesecake" which bore no resemblance to a conventional cheesecake and seemed to be the components in a bowl.
In normal circumstances I would have returned the main course at once ,as the occasion was more important than the food, I did not.
Our table was adjacent to a noisy party and the ambiance was poor.
Previously we have recommended the Three Crowns to a number of friends. On the basis of our recent experience we shall stop doing so.
Good food well presented. Service polite but a bit slow.
Table booked for 19:45, Food ordered at 20:00, arrived at 20:45, we made a private remark about the time it had taken which was picked up by a senior member of the waiting staff who as he passed by said very loudly “Thd till says the food was ordered at 20:00” clearly not wanting to discuss it just put us right, very rude.
We have eaten here three times this year and stayed once, family members have also eaten and stayed in 2019, very disappointed by this visit, with no real apologies, considering not returning or recommending,
Has the 3 Crowns got too big for it boots.
Absolutely perfect. Took my family here for mother’s day, I will be returning soon as the food was fantastic, service impeccable and just the atmosphere was great!!!
The food was wonderful, very fresh and full of taste. Apart from one waitress, the waiting team weren't the happiest or most helpful which is a shame. The place itself is lovely, the dining room is light, spacious and private while the bar area is cosy and it's especially nice if you can get the fireplace seats!
Beautifully located, beautiful building. The service was excellent and one of the best steaks I’ve had in a long time. Definitely coming again soon. Highly recommended
We all had roast lunch which was excellent, just the right amount of meat & veg .
Very tasty food in a lovely restaurant that was clean and ambient. The food tasted outstanding although there could have been more on the plate for the prices paid. Can't fault the staff who were friendly and good humoured.
The building is amazing. The sunday roast is not to be recommended. I had to get a steak knife to cut my roast beef and all the vegetables were not cooked.
Amazing food and competitive price too. Staff are friendly and the place itself is beautiful. Will definitely go back again!!!
Pleasant experience, nice welcome and surrounding, four of us had a nice mixture from the menu, my lamb was slightly undercook but didn't want to cause a fuss as we were enjoying ourselves. Desserts were excellent. Would visit again without hesitation.
Delicious beef burger and a totally beautiful building. Let down by unfriendl service .
Excellent service and delicious food, good size portions. We were celebrating a birthday and all the staff went out of their way to make it really special. Beautiful day, beautiful walk and beautiful meal.
A lovely location and building. Very cosy, and plenty of well trained staff on duty. All working together for the benefit of their clients.
Food was very good indeed. The Desert course a little late, but not the end of the world. It was a busy Saturday night but they coped well.
We will definitely be going back. Thanks to all.
As regular visitors we are used to the high standards of food and service that is a feature of the Three Crowns. A very pleasant environment with friendly, helpful staff.
Second time visiting, as the place comes recommended as one of the best restaurants in the area and we’d forgotten that we thought the food was overrated the first time around. Also the last time we were drinking so it was easier to enjoy the night as a whole, whereas this time i was pregnant so the emphasis was all on the meal.
Very nice setting, food is beautifully served, but tastes very average. We had steak, but was not the best cut, and the desserts bought us no joy at all, the fruit crumble is the worst, served with a stingy dollop of ice cream and thin layer of non-traditional crumble, the stewed fruit is so sharp it becomes unpleasant and impossible to eat. Very disappointed.
Overall good, food was good pub food. Service could have been a bit sharper. Some staff seemed a little unenthusiastic about serving.
This is a lovely place to stay and eat. This was the first time we have eaten in the bar and we actually preferred it to the main restaurant . It has a more intimate and cosy feel. The food was good and the selection of wine excellent
Excellent food and friendly staff and easy parking
Good place to eat at lunch-time. Although the menu is limited this is more than compensated for by the quality of the food which was hot, beautifully presented and very tasty - what more do you need? While not cheap the values is good.
We stayed overnight and ate in the restaurant for my birthday earlier this week. What a find! Everything about the stay, the food, service and ambiance was impeccable.
Celebrating my daughter’s engagement and everything could not have been better! The steak was amazing. Thank you.
