Outstanding service, ambiance, and food. Would go over and over and over again!
The restaurant itself was beautiful and cozy. I loved the fact that there was a real fireplace in the dinning room it just made the experience even better. The host and our waiter were excellent! The food was delicious. My boyfriends meal looked and tasted amazing and my meal was so good as well. I do wish the portion was bigger for what I paid for my meal. It seemed more like an appetizer than an entree. When I go to a restaurant for a meal I don’t expect to leave hungry and I’ll be honest when we left I was still very hungry. The meal was delicious but I probably wouldn’t recommend it to friends for the sole purpose that the entrees felt more like appetizers than entrees and you shouldn’t still be hungry when you leave the meal. Other than that the place was beautiful
Great place even when off season, Thanksgiving dinner was delish.
Soooo Cold. A nice Thanksgiving meal was marred by the collapse of the heating system on the coldest Thanksgiving day in 100 years.
Aside from the traditional turkey meal, the restaurant has a limited menu, but all are nicely prepared and presented. Good selection of wine-by-the-glass and there is a full bar. Both rooms are delightfully quiet.
I'll be back if the heating system is fixed.
Had it all: ambiance, superb food from prix fix menu, attentive but not intrusive service. Get a table while you can.
Thanksgiving dinner at the Vanderbilt Grill was highway robbery! We had seen the regular menu and knew it was not going to be a cheap meal. However we arrived to find that our only choice was a prix fixed menu at $82! We had no available option at that point so we stayed. For that price we got a small bowl of soup, a modest serving of turkey, and a dessert “buffet” of simple cookies and plain cheese cake. Only when we hit our bill did we find that coffee was extra! On top of that the service was poor. It was a full hour after we were seated when our main course arrived. Outrageous!
We so enjoyed our experience at their Thanksgiving day prix fixe event. The food was delicious and the staff were stellar. Will definitely come back for another special occasion in the future!
Great potential for fine dining, but not quite there. Ambiance (formal dining room with high ceilings, fireplace, live piano, art-deco artwork, well separated tables, etc.) is over-the-top. Service is adequate but not up to formal dining standards (staff training needed for the minor issued we noted). Food is mixed. Veal Tortellini (5 pieces for $32) was tasty, slightly undercooked and overpriced. My Pork Chop was well portioned but initially tough (hard surface exterior- but nicely pink inside) and very tasty. Caesar salads and butternut soup starters were excellent. Wine list was ambitious with few choices (if any) under $50. My major issue was that the dining room guests were dressed for a roadhouse meal (denim, flannel shirts, down jackets, hats at table, etc.) rather than the fine dining expectations we had based on other reviews.
Outstanding! Vanderbilt is perfect for quiet, intentional dinners. Great drinks, great appetizers and great entrees.

Went for restaurant week. Turned out being a great value. The weather outside was cold and windy, so the real wood fires in the various fireplaces inside were pleasant. The waitstaff throughout the hotel and restaurant were attentive, professional, and polite. The bar has a wide variety of quality options. The restaurant week menus offered variety as well. I will definitely return to explore the other dining options in the hotel. And I will recommend this to others.
Very nice lunch setting. Exterior looked inviting and definitely worth coming in warmer months to enjoy. A great surprise to find this lovely place.
The restaurant itself was pleasant and comfortable, and service was fine. I ordered from the brunch menu and decided on lobster benedict. Sadly, the lobster was very disappointing. Portions were small and definitely was not fresh lobster. The poached eggs were a bit undercooked, and the breakfast potatoes were very salty. When the waitress came by and asked how our meal was, I was honest with her. She asked if there was anything else I wanted, but really I just wanted to give them feedback back in the kitchen. This is our second disappointing meal here, so we will not be returning,
Outstanding Restaurant Week menus, with both regular ($35) and premium ($50) options. Service was quiet, discreet and efficient, while still welcoming and cheerful. Entire staff, from maitre d' to table server to sommelier were knowledgeable and helpful. Swordfish was grilled to perfection. Salmon was succulent. Somm's wine recommendation (Pouilly Fuisse) was spot on, and (mirabile dictu!) quite reasonably priced. Understated decor in a beautiful setting.
The entire experience was amazing. We were warmly greeted at the front entrance upon arrival. The host seated us right away, giving us a choice of tables so we opted for a table in front of the fireplace. Everything was impeccable, the music calming, and the service never rushed or delayed.
We decided on the wine pairing which was perfect with our host always willing to modify any of the pre-chosen selections to accomodate our tastes.
All three courses were excellent, from the first course pork belly, second course swordfish to desert, flour less chocolate torte. Everything was perfectly prepared, brought out on time and always with a smile.
We loved it and would highly recommend.

Celebrated my daughter’s 21st birthday here - had Sunday brunch with friends while visiting near Boston. Newport is a beautiful seaport destination that lends itself to a leasure meal and browsing the shops. The Vanderbuilt Grill was the perfect location for a delicious brunch, with a beautiful sunroom dining area, very attentive staff, accommodating chef, and free 2 hour parking!
The food was wonderful and the ambiance is very classy and romantic! The service is exceptional!
We went for lunch on our honeymoon. We were brought into the back room over looking the patio and it was such a beautiful view. The food was excellent as well as the hot Apple cider we ordered. To top it off was the creme brule of the day, and I would recommend anyone to get that dessert.
simply delicious food in a lovely old hotel. burger was beyond awesome, hubs puts it in his top five. the eggplant rolatini app is enough for a meal, light as feather cheese filling and so scrumptious. one of the best lunches we have had. will go back again.
Based on the reviews, we had expected an upscale brunch experience but we were seated on a sun porch that needed updating badly and it was a cold day in October. The food was only OK and the menu was nothing special. Lobster Benedict was dry and my husband's smoked salmon was not the freshest. IN addition the hostess was a hoverer. She would not leave us alone, checking every 5-10 minutes if we wanted anything. We were very disappointed.
What an amazing find in Newport. On the last evening of vacation we decided to go to the Vanderbilt Grill and I am so glad we did. From the decor, the service from Lorraine - a gem! To the food - a truly enjoyable evening. We tried the squid ink linguine with claims, scallops and calamari and also the truffle cheese ravioli - both were tender buttery pasta and the sauces smooth. Dessert was also a highlight - the beignets were filled, warm, sugary dusting and melted when a bite was taken.....highly recommend this place and will go back
Very, very disappointing, by far the worst afternoon tea I have ever attended. The menu on the website and what we were served were in no way the same. The food was stale and appeared to have been purchase premade from the bulk section of the supermarket.
Overpriced soup...$16 for 2-3oz of lobster bisque? Really? Hamburger was ok.
So, 2 beers, 2 soups and 1 burger for $91 w/tip?
One more thing...they shoved us in the “back room” b/c the main dining room was reserved for a private party. This back room also served as a direct pathway to to the outdoor fire pit during our dinner. The continuous opening of the doors permitting the bone chilling air to smother us was numbing and probably the thing that kept my cool from loosing my mind. Glad that I wasn’t staying there overnight. I followed the points on this one and got zinged.
I don’t recommend going here.

Great music and service
Ordered a plain unseasoned piece of salmon. Chef could not get a simple request correct. I finally declined new dinner so my husbands dinner didn't get cold waiting for my dinner to return.
This was exactly what we were looking for our anniversary dinner. Quiet not crowded for a Saturday night. Would definitely go again
Way overpriced. Small portions and really expensive drinks. $18 cosmopolitan come on and it was in a tiny glass. Definitely left disappointed

We have had a number of meals (brunch, lunch, dinner) at the Grill. Our favorite is to sit on the back patio for brunch or lunch. Great atmosphere, good is consistent and very good. Service good be a bit more attentive, but most certainly always friendly and very good.
Very very slow service. The bar took 20 minutes to bring our drinks: there were only 2 other tables in the restaurant. The food was bland and subpar. The location and ambiance are lovely. Creative cocktail list. Overpriced for what it is and the abysmal service speeds. Basically just a place to see and be seen.
Pricey, but lovely — romantic garden setting (for good weather only, of course), good wine list, innovative cuisine.
The chef forgot to put dressings on our seafood salad, so it was bland. When we told the waitress she did us a dressing, but it was still bland and we wanted to taste the dish as intended. My friend got sick 30 minutes after leaving the restaurant.
If you enjoy chef creations and excellent service this is the place to be! Halibut definitely is the best white fish I’ve ever had. Decent wine list and handcrafted cocktails topped with tasty deserts. On top of that orders from 2 dishes on the menu are going to charity. Great place for a date night or special occasion. Enjoy!
Gorgeous setting, beautiful small-midsize dining room, coffered ceiling. Piano/vocalist in the corner. I would dress for the dining room, more so than the bar seating. Food fantastic! Split creme brûlée for dessert (flavor of the month: orange). I had grilled salmon which was wonderful.
