Alex and Marciel are some of the most professional in the business.
The piano player was very nice. The dining room from 6:30 to 8:00 was almost empty, which made the dinner a bit awkward. My wife ordered a Grey Goose martini ($20) that was not good and served in a champagne glass. The waitress did not place that order immediately...so we waited about 15 minutes for it? The food was OK...both the salmon & halibut. The flow for a wannabe upscale restaurant was not good. The piano player was very nice and set a tone that the balance of the dinner was unable to match.
Excellent service. Wonderful food, delightful atmosphere
Poor , slow service. Waited 20 minutes for waiter to come to table.
Nice 1920s atmosphere and live piano music. Great cocktails with some original takes on classic cocktails. Their mixologist obviously puts a lot of thought into their drinks. Didn’t try the food.
Mother's day brunch was outrageously overpriced. $82 a person for brunch. You would have expected fair such as lobster and other expensive items, but the brunch was fairly standard fair.
Couple of things to note: due to the age and provenance of the building, seating is scattered. If you have mobility impaired folks with you, mention it! The conservatory has a two steps up one step down arrangement, that might be challenging. Value would also vary based on seating: the main dining room had a pianist.
Outstanding service and food. My wife and I went to celebrate our anniversary and they had a nice card on the table congratulating us. The service was top notch and food outstanding
Very elegant dining atmosphere. Our young waiter was efficient and very personable. I had grilled shrimp with gnocchi and the gnocchi was the best I’ve ever had! It is a bit pricey but nice for a special occasion. The only complaint I have is that the restroom was not in a convenient location. It was down a flight of stairs in the hotel basement across from where the pool is.
When you frequent restaurants rated 4 stars
and pay $$$$, you come to expect a certain
level of satisfaction. Unfortunately, this was not
to be at the Vanderbilt Grill. My husband asked if the Halibut could be prepared without the farro . The waiter assured him that it would not be a problem and offered to substitute a different starch. I asked him how I should order the baby lamb chops so that the center would be pink but not red , he said medium rare. The first problem is that our food was not delivered by our waiter . My meat was blood red and sent back, My husband had to start eating while his fish was warm only to discover that his vegetables were mixed in with the farro that he wasn’t supposed to be served. The waiter was no where to be found. By the time we were halfway through our meals, he passes by inquiring how things are to which I reply “Terrible” as he smiles, nods and continues walking. I actually had to call out to him and repeat my statement. I explained that my husband could not eat his vegetables as they were mixed with the farro. He nodded and left. At the very least he could have brought my husband a plate of vegetables. We didn’t see him again until he asked if we wanted dessert. Considering that my husband had only a piece of halibut for dinner he certainly had room for dessert but We had had enough of this waiter and asked for the check.
As he handed us the check he said. “I’m sorry that the
Kitchen served the farro”. Nothing else needs to be said!
Easter Brunch. Beautiful location and wonderful service. Food was mediocre.
The service was non-existent. This was the Easter buffet and everything was over cooked so bad I couldn't eat it. Greatly disappointed in the whole experience considering the price paid.
The brunch was a bit disorganized. There was a hidden omelet station that was missed by our table. It took 30 min to get our bill. We were there for 2 hours for a buffet brunch only because every step took so long. Very odd experience. The food was great. The pianist was great.. maybe only music for the Easter event? A lot of money for something we all left scratching our heads.
We had a wonderful time at the Vanderbilt Grill! The food was outstanding and the service was very good. There was also live music (a women playing the piano and singing). That was a very nice addition to our dinner.
What a fantastic eating experience!! We had the 4 course tasting nenu with wine pairing. Every course was perfection on a plate. The wines were perfectly picked to elevate the food. My teenagers ordered the NY srip, cooked beautifully med rare and the duck duck cous. Very flavorful dish. The only drawback was the duck breast was over cooked. To be fair the waiter did not ask how she wanted it but med rare is how this should be served. They also loved the beignets for dessert. The Vanderbilt Grill is well worth the trip if your are in or near Newport, RI.
Excellent choice for restaurant week. Beautiful hotel.
We showed up for our reservation and the restaurant closed early without notifying us. We were rudely turned away during one of the busiest weekends (Restaurant Week) of the season. Evidently customer service or staying open during posted hours were not important to these folks.
Elegant and refined are two words that come to mind. Very good b
The Vanderbilt Grill had a wonderful ambiance with the piano playing in the background. The food was excellent, and being Restaurant Week was a great value. The service was also top notch. I would definitely return for a nice romantic evening.
when booked online, tables were full from 10 a.m. on, so took a 12:45 sitting; got there and the place was virtually empty; two other tables seated (plenty of elbow room; at least 8 other vacant tables); and the service was sketchy: asked for refill of coffee and took forever; offer included one side order per offer and had to ask for a second as we had two offers; the bill was delivered at full rate instead of at discount rate; portions were adequate, but for price can go elsewhere for double the amount of food
Food was amazing! Butternut squash soup was delicious. I wish i had seconds. My husband got the octopus and I was pleasantly surprised how good it was. Only bad thing was we arrive about 15 minutes or so early. Our tabke was not ready. But all that had to be done was turn it over... That took 15 minutes. They were apparently short staffed, and apoligized for our wait. Once we sat down though, it was great.
Such a lovely ladies lunch in the solarium! Great bloody marys and yummy salads, and they even put together a special little dessert for one of us who was celebrating a birthday. Must remember to dine here more often!
Nice piano music during dinner
Beautiful dinning room with a fireplace
Excellent service and food! Beautiful location. Our table was in front of a fireplace and there was live piano music while we dined. Absolutely lovely experience!
Excellent meal. Attentive staff. Live piano music made the atmosphere in the elegant dining room all the better. Swordfish was delicious! Butternut squash was the best soup my husband has ever had.
Another wonderful lunch with a friend in the conservatory with Amanda as our server. Lovely setting with Trinity church and the sunlight on a frigid day. Impeccable service but not intrusive, never rushed. Enjoyed our delicious winter salads with crisp greens & fresh fruit, mine topped with grilled chicken and my friend had salmon on hers. Lingered afterwards with conversation and cappuccino and the most divine hot chocolate. Always a pleasure to bring friends here for their first visit. Excellent service, the food is consistent and this is easily my favorite place to spend a winter afternoon over lunch with a friend.
I went to the Vanderbilt for afternoon tea. Outstanding value and terrific service! A lovely afternoon--highly recommended. I will be going back.
My wife and I had our Valentine's Day dinner there. We selected the special Valentine's Day Prix Fixe menu. The entire visit at Vanderbilt Grill was top notch from our first arrival to the Petit four at the finish of the meal. Both my wife and I had completely different dishes and each and everyone was outstanding. Vanderbilt Grill will remain on our list of fine dining for special occassions.
The food was good, the service was very nice, and the atmosphere was excellent. The hotel is restored in a way that brings eclectic elegance to the dining experience.
Appetizers of oysters and octopus were fresh and tasty with traditional accompaniments. The main dishes were good but could have used some inspirations with flavors to really bring them to life more vibrantly.
The drink selections and wine are by far incredibly strong with a nice mix of non traditional pairings that may be one of the best things about the restaurant.
Overall, our experience was very nice and the staff was friendly and accommodating. We will return again.

Beautiful old home - ate in sun room - limited menu, but good. A quiet place to enjoy with friends.
I don't enjoy writing unpleasant reviews. This place is so disorganized. Was seated in a blinding sun room for brunch while the nice dining room remained closed. Servers tried their best. Food was just ok. Great location, inside a hotel I had never heard about. Look further for your brunch.
Special Christmas dinner with live piano music, English snappers, and delicious food!
Amanda was great! Cheerful and pleasant and made my mom feel at ease in when she was nervous and thought we were at a “much fancier place than I was expecting!”
Oysters delicious and the cocktail with the thyme syrup was on spot! Thank you for a wonderful lunch!
A favorite spot for lunch is the conservatory room, bright even on cloudy days due to the glass windows with a nice view of Trinity Church. It's rarely crowded at the time I dine and tucked aways from the bustling shops on Thames. Service is always excellent. Our server today was Amanda and she was friendly, knowledgeable, always nearby and ready to assist but never overbearing. I always choose this spot when dining with a friend I haven't seen in a long time and we have a lot of catching up to do because they do not rush you through your meal and are respectful if you are having a conversation. The menus rotate with the season and the salads are always fresh and delicious. The bison chili was good with the perfect amount of spice. I have enjoyed romantic dinners in the dining room here with hubby, brought company here for sunset on the rooftop and enjoyed lunch out on the veranda. Always a favorite for us.
Dear RosemaryG, Thank you for sharing your recent experience. We very much appreciate your continued support of the hotel and restaurant. It is important that we continue to meet and exceed all of our guests expectations, including our beloved locals, each and every time you walk through the door! We look forward to welcoming you back for another fantastic experience. Warm Wishes, Alex Pendergrass Food & Beverage Manager
Outstanding service, ambiance, and food. Would go over and over and over again!
The restaurant itself was beautiful and cozy. I loved the fact that there was a real fireplace in the dinning room it just made the experience even better. The host and our waiter were excellent! The food was delicious. My boyfriends meal looked and tasted amazing and my meal was so good as well. I do wish the portion was bigger for what I paid for my meal. It seemed more like an appetizer than an entree. When I go to a restaurant for a meal I don’t expect to leave hungry and I’ll be honest when we left I was still very hungry. The meal was delicious but I probably wouldn’t recommend it to friends for the sole purpose that the entrees felt more like appetizers than entrees and you shouldn’t still be hungry when you leave the meal. Other than that the place was beautiful
Dear Anonymous, Thank you for sharing your recent dining experience with us! We are so delighted to hear that you enjoyed our wonderful ambiance and service team. Great place even when off season, Thanksgiving dinner was delish.
Dear EdwardM, Thank you for sharing your recent dining experience with us. We are delighted to hear that your Thanksgiving meal was so enjoyable. We hope to welcome you back to the restaurant in the not too distant future. Happy Holidays, Alex Pendergrass Food & Beverage Manager
Soooo Cold. A nice Thanksgiving meal was marred by the collapse of the heating system on the coldest Thanksgiving day in 100 years.
Aside from the traditional turkey meal, the restaurant has a limited menu, but all are nicely prepared and presented. Good selection of wine-by-the-glass and there is a full bar. Both rooms are delightfully quiet.
I'll be back if the heating system is fixed.
Had it all: ambiance, superb food from prix fix menu, attentive but not intrusive service. Get a table while you can.
Dear alfredb, Thank you for the kind words based on your recent experience with us. It certainly brings us joy to see that the experience was a memorable one. We look forward to having you back! Happy Holidays Alex Pendergrass Food & Beverage Manager
